1/2 Price Fresh Tasmanian Salmon Portions Skin On $21/kg (Was $42) @ Coles

3910

Half price salmon at Coles! Apparently the lowest price in 5 years.

Seems like a nation wide sale. This ad was plastered all over my local deli https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/103218/111814/img_1189…

Expires unknown this Sunday, credit to @ GoSwans, there seemed to be heaps of stock at my local.

    • I should go catch some Tassie Salmon this weekend. They're a bit of a bugger though.

      • are there escaped salmon in the wild to be caught there?

        • Yes.

    • +1

you will be expecting $80/kg for wild caught

    • How much do you pay for wild caught? And where do you buy wild caught salmon?

      • +1

The same place you get the lobster and every other seafood. Straight from the boats at the dock.

      • Costco sell frozen wild caught Sockeye salmon from Alaska and it's great if you like the flavour - it's stronger than Atlantic salmon which is what most salmon actually is, including Tasmanian etc.

You don't see it much anywhere else due to shipping costs etc.

Well worth a try though, we eat quite a bit of Salmon and this is the "luxury version" for us…

Edit - it comes in imperial sized bags but I think equates to about $45/kg.

  • Time to bring my shine box

    thanks guys, grabbed 10 pieces

    • When ordering online, it doesnt allow me to order 10, max is 6 at my store

  • Also I found that after freezing salmon, it gets a bit dry after cooking on a pan….

$23 per kg pre the pandemic price gouge.

    • +1

      From where?

      • Can confirm. Asian groceries.

  • Now I have something to sous vide from the last Amazon sale!

    • +2

I wouldn't bother with salmon. It's easy to overcook at the best of times.

E.g. - if you want crispy skin then DRY the skin and place skin side down for perhaps a couple of mins in a hot pan and then maybe a minute on the flesh side. It all comes down to pan heat and personal choice but that works for me. Try to start cooking from room temp too. You can how well the salmon has cooked by looking side on as it will change colour.

If using oil for searing I tend to go with Avocado - neutral taste and very high smoke point. Don't use olive oil for searing.

If you want to cook skin off then the same but remove from the pan after 30 secs and the skin will peal away easily as the fat underneath it has melted by then.

  • How short dated is it?

    • Saw some prepackaged portions at my store expiring between 16-19 Apr so quite a few days to go

      • I got 3kg from a new box after Coles packed away the day's deli

Emotive story but if you google salmon farm deaths you'll (sadly) find plenty of related links worth knowing about.

It is true reality for any food industry, same would go for chickens in cages or beef cruelty, including vegetables sprayed with pesticides like glyphosate… What most of the people should eat, organic and wild caught, not many can afford that… The best to have your own fresh produce if you can…..

That's a product of living in an over-populated world, with little space for species to exist away from human pressures. Either farm fish and wreck some of the ocean or drag nets through it and damage it that way. Fertile land that gets reasonable rainfall (or irrigation that ruins wild rivers) is already mostly turned into agricultural land. Our economy is driven by a rising population. The one child policy is causing age demographic problems in China. The question is, how do we fix the problem?

On the bright side, Coles puts the Salmon in single use plastic bags 😕

I buy packed salmon every week, the past 3-4 years the price up from 30ish to 60ish just crazy

  • +1

    got 1.5kg.
looks like sushi night will be good.

    • Any tail cuts?

    • +2

You need the freshest salmon possible for sushi making and not the supermarket salmon.

  • Is this actually instore or an online only deal?

    • +2

Available instore. Was a limit of 2.5kg

      • Was a limit of 2.5kg

No way. I rocked up to my coles in the morning to grab 2kg. They had 2.5kg packs so i picked one. But there were others that took 10kg boxes (the 2.5kg packs were in 2 pack carboard boxes). May be they did multiple runs at cashier but from deli the person had no trouble handing off them

  • $14 per piece at IKEA (1/2 price Fridays)

  • +2

For anyone in Sydney, ora king salmon is currently $54/kg at getfish at the moment

Not that much more expensive than full price Coles/woolworths but much better

    • That's a rip compared to sydney fish market!

$27-30 a kg for orca king whole fish though not fillets but considering almost half the price it still works out much cheaper

  • +5

Might get some for once. I pretty much haven’t bought any the past few years since learning about their farming, all the dying, antibiotics, impact on nearby environment, that they add colouring to make the meat more pink, etc.

  • Valid today only or longer?

    • Supposedly until Sunday if they don’t sell out

  • +4

    Scoreeeeeeeeeee!

Scored a sealed 2.5kg unpacked container at my local store just now!

Super fresh, the stuff at the counter was all sold out so I asked lady if any out back and she brought out a sealed pack for me :D

    • Nice find! Is it frozen?

      • +1

It wasn't frozen solid when I got it, package says keep 0-4c

I assume the got delivery today at my store and they just thawed it maybe?

    • I got basically the same! Belly pieces!
Requested them to open the box and split into smaller bags, so I can freeze.

  • Why not just buy the Scandinavian imported frozen salmon instead?
They even descale or deskin for you overseas, whereas i doubt you'll get that much effort from local stock

    • +3

Tasmanian taste better! I tried both …. especially the one from Aldi fridge section!

  • How long can you keep frozen salmon in the freezer?

  • I wouldn’t eat Tasmanian salmon and I live here

    https://tasmanianinquirer.com.au/news/report-reveals-high-le…

    • What salmon would you recommend?

      • -1

        Anything but farmed

        • Thanks. Gave this a miss after thinking about it. Shame as I really Love salmon

  • Oh no, I didn’t see this yesterday when I went to Coles! Have to go again today to grab some! Thanks

  • " … All Coles Own Brand seafood, whether farmed or wild-caught, must meet … "

So is this one farmed or wild-caught?
    Coles doesn't say.

Flavor and colour are dramatically different.

    • Most likely farmed.
Any marketer would label it as wild to sell more I imagine.

    • +1

It's farmed - says so at the deli.

    • How does wild differ from farm? Is it to do with what they are fed?

      • Feeding and the environment (water), free to roam for wild-caught but restricted for farming; even when it is just large nets in the "ocean".

    • The chicken you buy is also farmed, did you know that?

      • Yes.
So is beef. And eggs. And milk. And fruit. And vegetables. And … and probably far too many to mention.

However … with salmon there is a difference in taste and colour. Better fishy taste and intense redish colour.

Now, "wild-caught" chickens, eggs, beef, fruit, milk, etc etc etc … not too sure they are any better or even safe to eat (edible) …

The only special at my local was skin off at $41 p/kg down from $46

    • Same in Victoria

    • Skin on was $21. My local Coles in middle Camberwell seemed to have spare stock in the back. Managed to get another 6 portions today.

    • I actually managed to find it today at Chadstone Village after TheGlen let me down

  • +2

Went to 4 stores in Sydney all sold out since yesterday.

  • Still some left at Coburg North Coles in Victoria.

  • Is it worth freezing these? Or they only taste good fresh? Not sure if I should buy some for the freezer

  • +1

Went to my local Coles today and it was all sold out.
I suppose my local will put stock out when it goes back to normal price

  • Bought 2 fillets x 3 at Coles Tunstall Sq (MEL), each fillet about 200-225g.
Cooked 2 last night, can confirm that it was very good, maybe not restaurant quality but I cooked it very carefully. Very happy with the quality. Will freeze the rest

  • I managed to grab a 2.5kg box today for from my local. :)
Just ask the deli for a box from out the back.

  • went past 2 stores both had plenty of stock. Grab em while they hot. Decided to get 4 cuts, although to note the colour looks more like a trout than salmon. Salmon is salmon i guess :)

  • +1

Have been to two local stores and no stock
