Sodastream or Similar

Ok I'm ready to buy a Sodastream. Regular price doesn't seem worth it though, any tips?

Comments

  • All the machines are on sale on sodastream.com.au right now, so that would seem a way of not paying the regular price.

  • Any good deals on getting old version of the co2 cylinders?

    • Why the old version?

      • There are two versions, old school and new one, quick connect.

        • What's better

@adam149: You buy me the new one, i will compare them and rate it for you 😉 but new one says "quick connect" and its new lol

          • @adam149: Quick connect replacement bottles are hard to come buy. BigW is one place I know of only. Whereas, the standard bottle can be had at your local servos, colesworth etc.
And doing your old Co2 refill…… been there down that…. PITA.

            • @82norm: 7/11 and some other servo's in Perth have the quick connect CO2 cannisters, both for buying extra's as well as "swap & go".

    • Off-brand CO2 canisters can be found at IGAs, last I replaced one it cost $16… but that was like 8 months ago

  • I got soda stream spirit on super sale and looking back I’d say still not worth - definitely be spewing if I paid rrp

Been tempted to get one, but every time I've tried drinking Sodastream water am reminded why I don't bother.

It just tastes so different from commercially bought carbonated water- really rough giant bubbles, and then it goes flat really fast.

    • Don't you just need to carbonate it more?

      • +1

Nope. Doesn't help with either problem.

        • Interesting, I didn't know that. I like as much carbonation as possible. I do have filtered water from my fridge, not sure that will help.

        • +2

Some people (like me) prefer it less carbonated. Reminds me a bit of Perrier.

          • @afoveht: That's the thing- a glass starts of as nastily over-carbonated with huge bubbles, and then within minutes it goes unpleasantly flat.

I like quite Perrier, mild carbonation that stays around the same level for a a long time.

Fair enough that lots of people seem to like it, but I just don't. It's a weird product that doesn't seem to resemble anything else I've come across.

          • @afoveht: Its why I got one, I like it being a little fizzy without it being over the top

      • Don’t forget you’ll also contribute to global warming with all the Co2!!!

The water absorbes much more gas if it's chilled in the fridge first.

  • I know so many people with unused Soda Streams in their home, gathering grime and dust.

  • The aspirational model is SodaStream DUOâ„¢, carbonates dishwasher-safe glass and plastic bottles. But if you're price sensitive shop pre-owned.

  • I picked up the "Terra Value Pack" from Costco for $95 a few weeks ago. This has the machine, 1x co2 canister and 2x 1L bottles.

They also have the exact same items + price in a box called the "Terra Mega Pack". Not sure why the two different names, even the barcodes were identical. I'm assuming new stock vs old stock.

Buy the cheapest sodastream model you can, then head to kegland, buy the adapter and a 2.6kg cylinder.

Enjoy $35 a year refills, compared to $35 a month, for the sodastream cylinders.

    I average 3-4 refills daily

  • buy a Drinkmate, fizzes up anything, beats sodastream pants down

    • What type of cylinders does it use ?

      • Drink Mate uses Soda Stream Old Style screw connector - and is compatable with External Keg Co2 Bottle adapters
I have both SodaStrem and DrinkMate and find the DrinkMate gives a better carbonation.

Check facebook marketplace for used .

Go to kegland to buy a 2.6 kg CO2 bottle and adapter to refill the cylinder . Details

  • Check the Breville inFizz Fusion. It allows you to add flavour before fizzing so it doesnt restrict your flavour options. It uses standard SodaStream canisters.

  • You could get a drink mate instead, support an Aussie company. Still compatible with standard Sodastream and you can fizz anything (imo tastes better than Sodastream too!)

  • We have Aarke machines. More expensive than Sodastream, but they're (a) manual, (b) solid, (c) Nordic design and manufacture, (d) use Sodastream refills.

  • We use the old style Qarbo. Similar to Drink Mate where it fizzes anything, uses the blue Sodastream bottles or other company refills, and the long bottles fit better in our fridge.

  • FB marketplace.
Often come with gas bottle - empty but then .
Refill at your local fishing supply store - mine $12 per swap out empty gas bottle as compared to $20 with swap bottle at Cole’s/woolies.

I learned that COLD water best to carbonate (after years of using filtered tap water. Definitely makes a difference.

I picked up the old square shape bottles and some of the newer (not newest ) which all fit my 2nd fb marketplace buy sodastream that has 3 choice of carbonation.

  • if its just to make soda water, and you're thinking of going down the larger (eg 2.6kg) gas bottle route, unless you need/want the pretty benchtop unit that a sodastream offers, just get a "carbonation cap" and a ball lock disconnect for your gas line (about $10 in total).
Fill standard PET bottle ~80% with cold water, attach carbonation cap and tighten as you squeeze out extra air, connect ball lock disconnect from gas bottle and charge with CO2 and shake for 10-20s. Done. Soda water.
