FAQ Article

This isn't always an NBN replacement (FTTP, FTTC, FTTB, HFC) and is more targeted for regional/remote/rural areas that might have NBN FW/Satellite or have poor FTTN. Starlink might not be suitable for everyone.

  • Who pays for shipping to return the hardware if you cancel before the 30 days?

    • +4

      Elon Musk does,
"After initiating the return, you will receive automatically by email a prepaid return label and instructions on how to return the Starlink kit."

  • I suppose ipv4 on CGNAT with no real IP?
    what about IPv6?

    Telstra 5G give a SINGLE IPv6 /128 address,
Optus/Vodafone have no IPv6 at all

Its a Musk business - IP allocation is all over the place. Anything can happen.

I have NBN FTTP would this be good /s

  • -1

Waste of money if you have NBN.

I tested this against wireless NBN, as I'm regional, but there was no significant real world difference to justify paying double the monthly cost.

    • You must be in a google Wireless NBN area then.

  • I will buy if it's portable and work on cruise ship.

    • where would you mount it?

    • Most cruise ships are quickly rolling out Starlink connections to replace their legacy sat internet solutions. Will make a world of difference, but its up to the cruiseline at how good they are at implementing the network onboard the ship & pricing. Saw an image somewhere of the Pacific Adventure ship with half a dozen starlink dishes mounted in a row up on the top deck, pretty cool!

signed up 2 days ago and missed the promotion.

Only way to get it is to do a free return and sign up with a differnet email address then get the month free.. i think its worth it.

Starlink user here, Brisbane metro area but only FTTN available at questionable speeds.

    Pros:
    - I have a few trees around and it still works just fine, and reports no obstructions
    - Speed is absolutely fine, I get at least 100Mbit down at all times, and depending on the time of day it can go up to 300-400.
    - Latency is fine most of the time, it averages around 40ms and I expect that is mostly down to the PoP being in Sydney which is going to add at least 30ms anyway (it did when I used to have fibre at my old house)
    - I have 4 kids all gaming/streaming and no complaints about lag.
    - Video calls work just fine, no latency. People tend to be quite surprised when I tell them it's Starlink.

    Cons:
    - It's more expensive than NBN
    - Very occasional drop-outs, although it's getting less worse as more satellites go up
    - Peak time speeds are always low compared to the best available, I guess PoP bandwidth is sized to be "just ok" for peak
    - It drops out completely when we get very heavy rain
    - CGNAT on IPV4 and no IPV6 available. (if you don't know what CGNAT is then it's likely not going to affect you)

Before I moved house I used to use it in roaming mode and just activated it when I went camping (ran it off my trailer's 12v batter with an inverter, it pulls about 40W). Getting 200Mbit down in the middle of the Outback was kinda cool :)

I'm due to get fibre before end of year and I'll convert it back to a roaming sub at that point as it can't compete with fibre.

    Cheers.

Just get NBN fibre, Star link satellite, at least 1 5G carrier connection. That's 3 independent routes to the internet.

Though if you're on Supertel et all networks, with 3 redundant ring network interconnects between neighbouring POI's, the chances a problem lasts longer than CVC contention issues, I doubt it's all that's needed.

  • Do you have to mount it to your roof or can you just stick it in the backyard?

    • For your house, it ideally should be mounted to your roof. It could have obstructions if it is just in the backyard. Plus, running the cable through the window or door probably isn't ideal.
