For relaxing times, make it Suntory time.

Great for highball, esp when I can't find Chita

  • Damn, would have jumped on this if I didn't already spend $85 for a bottle of 20yo Greign last night for a present.

    Thanks OP.

Almost out of Hibiki Harmony, and like to have some Japanese whisky on-hand but can't justify the pricing some of the labels command these days solely due to stock shortages.

Have ordered for pick-up tomorrow - good for some upcoming winter getaways :)

This is no hibiki though. I bought it once and my verdict was”never again” (unless you’re into cocktails)

  • +5

Good ish for highballs or cocktails but that's about it. Not so amazing on it's own since it's quite bitter/concentrated tasting without other notes of flavour

      You’re too kind

  • Unfortunately, options look very limited. Gold reserve for less than $75 looks worth considering.

Don't forget about flybuys offer boost, I got 5x points

  • What’s a good mixer for highball? Bought! Thanks OP

  • How does the taste of this bottle compare to Glenfiddich 12-year-old?

    • +1

It's a different type of drop. Glenfiddich is peaty whereas this is non-peaty but a bit spicy for a Japanese whiskey.

      • Appreciate your sharing, considering saving money for a Hibiki as a kick start for Janapnese Whiskey.

        • +2

Hibiki really not that good unless in a high ball.. has a spicy taste

          • @zjz93: Thanks for sharing. I'm not into spicy taste so maybe my wallet get saved today;)

          • +1

@zjz93: I can attest to this. Just picked this up and had a taste. Has a bit of a rocket fuel burn to it. I don't know if they can justify the price point for something that has a bit of a moonshine quality but then I'm not a connoisseur of whisky.

            • @Steven Reece Lewis: yes i only ever buy hibiki if i was in japan where it is already discounted and i can buy it from tax free store

Glenfiddich 12 would not be one described as peaty. It is a classic example of Speyside. Vanilla and sweet notes throughout.

There are a few Glenfiddich limited releases that have a touch of peat, but it is not used at all in Glen 12.

      • If you think that has peat then you don't know what peat is. It's extremely smooth, generic honey palette scotch.

        • Pick up pretty much any bottle of Laphroaig and you'll know what peat is ;)

    • This has much more subtle flavours as its spent less time in the cask, probably only 3-5 years if I was to guess. This will smell a little more 'shiny' and you will have to try a little harder to pick out the flavours. I'd say its not for beginners if you're having it straight.

I'd describe Glendfiddich as a more generic scotch flavour, the usual honey notes. To me this is a little more interesting and I'd choose this however everyone has different tastes.

I bought a bottle recently. It's more delicate in flavour than similarly priced Scottish whiskies. More floral and sweet, with no peat at all. I quite like it for something a little different.

  • I bought my single malt deal earlier last week…

Tried this, flavour is very light and weak and was bad for a high ball

  • Very weak whisky. Not good option

  • not available at Sydney World Square as always.

    • lol too many alcoholics in Sydney CBD

Got this for highballs and it wasn’t great. The whole time I’m thinking I should have spend more for Hibiki Harmony. At least you can have it neat, on the rocks or with a mixer.

Price for this deal is pretty good though and it’ll still get you drunk.

    • Why put this in a highball anyway. It's light in flavour and if you're adding soda that dilutes it even more.

  • Thanks man, always wanted to try a Japanese whisky.

  • cannot use the code anymore - it said expired.. :(

    • Still works. Placed an order about 3 hours ago.

    • I just used it

  • Unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations for a $70 whisky. I found it quite harsh, and as others have said, not much flavour. I had it with a couple of drops of water.

For a $55 whisky, it's okay, I'd go in expecting quality around that price.

    • I reckon it's fine even at $70 and at $55 very nice. If you like Japanese whisky it's a winner at that price IMO. Found it a very easy drink to enjoy last night. Hehe. Everyone will have a different palate.

    • +1

Lol the decent $55 whiskies are not $55 anymore, more like $70 for a naked malt. You'll struggle to do better even for $70

      • Agreed, for the entry level Japanese whisky, you can’t go wrong at this price
