  • Great shaver

May I ask if a premium shaver makes a big difference? Probably less irritation?
I am currently using an under $100 Phillips.

    • Theres a few differences, blade quality, motor strength and typically battery life. All of this essentially equates to how much hair a shaver can cut, with your typical Philips 1000 series you're typically cutting every other day opposed to the braun series 9 and philips 9000 which advertise once weekly shaves. They also have autosense technology which is better for sensitive skin as well.

      • Yeah, no way i could get away with weekly shaves, I'm daily and i have to blade twice a week to get the stragglers. Mind you that is neck only as i have a beard.
I've had a few Braun and they are really good, long lasting and all that seems to fail is the foils wear out eventually, new foils are cheap enough and after a few foils the battery will go but that is years of good running later.

I've had a series 9 for at least a year and there is no way on this planet the standard adult male is getting away with weekly shaves lol. It doesn't magically stop facial hair from growing.

        • +3

I can do weekly shaves but usually 2 times a week, nothing to do with the shaver and more being asian

        • +10

I should have phrased it better but they advertise that it can cut 7 days worth of growth opposed to the typical shaver which is 2-3 days growth.

      • 2-3 times a week. not once a week

    • +3

ive watched a lot of reviews and it seems it all boils down to motor strength, closeness of shave and skin irritation. if youre happy with the $100 theres probably no need to upgrade i have a lot of issues with irritation so didnt want to try a cheap one again

    • I found it did. I had a cheapish Remington and it was taking me ages to shave with it as I'd got lazy due to working from home nearly all the time.

Bought a Braun series 8 and there was a huge difference. So much faster and a closer shave. Well worth the money. It also came with the self cleaning thing which is very useful.

I’m not a shaving expert but $699 seem (profanity) expensive for a shaver, I have a beard though.

Great shaver! bought my first series 9 around 2005 and it lasted probably 15 years before finally dying. So I replaced it with another series 9, which I expect should keep me going until 2035.

  • how close a shave does this give ?

    • +1

Close but not shaver close. You’ll never be able to achieve as smooth as razor I reckon. I got this shaver. It’s good.. but not $400 good

    • +2

I have this shaver and it's by far the closest shave Iv2e experienced from electric. It is ridiculously good. Cost and value judgements are individual but there is no doubt this shaver is the ducks nuts of electric shavers. Check out some reviews but anyone not satisfied with the shave this gives needs a razor.

    • As close as a blade, or your money back*

      • was actually Remington
    • I use this for my head. It's the closest shave I've achieved from any electric razor.

It cuts almost like a razor shave going with the grain in terms of closeness.

I have a beard so dont really use on face/neck, although have found it doesn't work great for me on the neck below my beard line.

If it ever dies, I'll be buying this again without hesitation.

This or a Panasonic 5 blade(The RRP seems much cheaper though)? https://www.shavershop.com.au/panasonic/multi-flex-5-blade-e…

    • +1

I was considering this too but was told by multiple people that the Panasonics are not as good for course hair/stubble. I went with the braun series 9+ and it is amazing for electric. Night and day better than my previous series 7.

      • +6

Panasonic 5 and 6 blade still gives the closest shaver over the Series 9 Pro Plus.

I went from Phillips rotary, to Braun and have had my Panasonic 5 blade for over 4 years and haven’t looked back. Unfortunately the new 6 blade Panasonics (latest model from Japan) are $$$. But the 5 blade still hold their own after all this time.

Review showing the older/newer Panasonic still have the closest shave-

        • The perfect souvenir

    • I had a couple of the Panaonics. One died after 18 months. They both had crap blades that would start giving a less close shave after only 6 months or so. Maybe they've improved but the current Braun for the win for me.

  • +1

    Any deals on trimmer?

  • They're a great shaver but you can't use them while plugged in. This means it'll eventually become a brick when the battery doesn't hold charge.
This is likely very intentional planned obsolescence and a bit annoying at this price point.

    • +2

The battery lasts me two weeks plus of daily shaves, it will take a decade or two to put 500 cycles into this battery. You’ll have a mechanical issue before then.

      • Yeah that's fair. You could probably even mount a reasonable argument they implemented it as a safety feature given it's a wet/dry shave.

      • You can also buy replacement batteries.

    • I have an older model that is 10 years old, but it still works well.

  • My first electric shaver was a braun.

I am still using it 25 years later.

    • Same for me as well.

Just an incredible shaver and it just super close. People are shocked when they hear I use an electric over a manual with how close it gets.

      Highly recommend.

    • The same for me. I have the Braun 8995 360 complete. Still going strong after 20 years. Even with the original battery.

  • My last two Braun's lasted two years each. Both used for wet shaves, refuses to charge due to corroded ports.

  • Rotary vs foil shavers?

    • Rotary suck - never had a rotary that didn't yank out hairs.

This cuts close and doesn't irritate

  • Had to return mine as ut couldn't grab my neck hair. Gone back to my old trusy Philips one blade.

  • All I want is a good usb c shaver. Seems impossible to find. Manscaped do usb but aren't amazing, and others who are good don't do usb c.

  • +1

I have this but Series 7. Best shaver ever and nearly as smooth as a blade.

  • Love the s5 I got from last deal, replaced my aquatouch

  • +1

    Bought one ty OP

  • I have series 7 for the last 15 years. Nothing wrong with it. I buy the foild every year or so. However, I need to run multiple times around the chin. Also, I have very sensitive skin.
Does this one much better than the one I have?

    • +1

Use both series 7 (older version before new series 7 released a few years ago) and the series 9.

Series 9 is good for hair on cheeks etc, but it's too aggressive for the neck area. I use the series 7 (on the older light mode setting) for that. Do not recommend the series 9 if you have sensitive skin, and need to shave your neck area.

I have the complete setup with the power case and clean/charge station. Cant imagine what more anyone could need. Indulgent but amazing.

  • 7 wins just still . Small difference really between the series 5 and 7 - have both , apart from price for my growth. Tried the 8 but actually worse ? Both still need multiple passes tho especially on neck .The new 7 foils are not as good tho and my cleaner failed so use diswashing liquid and lube spray - recommend ! Not doing $400 for a 9 after thec 8 experience - resale price poor . They c me out .

To anyone who has used this, does this catch on your balls when shaving down there?

    • not with steel ball

    • Depends how taut your sack is

  • -1

You can buy the Philips Norelco Series 9000 for $139 + shipping on Amazon right now.

  • Anyone got any thoughts as to whether the cleaning station (SmartCare Centre) is worth the extra $50 at $449?

    https://www.shavershop.com.au/braun/series-9-proplus-wet--an…

    • +1

Yes, it is if you can stomach buying the cartridges. Keeps my series 5 very clean.

      • Thank you, hopefully I can get two months out of a cartridge only shaving every couple of days.

        • +4

You dont really have to clean it every time you use. Apparently the secret to longer life is to keep the cap and every time you use it put the cap back on the cartridge. It stops it from evaporating quickly

          • @Clambabula: This is the way, although eventually it seems to go a bit funny after X length of time

      • +2

You can also make your own solution and reuse the cartridges easily enough. Distilled water, 70% isopropyl alcohol (at 40/60 ratio) and essential oil should you wish to add.

        • So distilled water makes up 40% of the solution and 60% 70% isoprop solution?

  • Can you use this to shave your head or only your beard? I have been using a trimmer on head/beard for a while now and this looks nice but want to check the difference? Thanks in advance.

    • +1

That’s what i use it for. Works a treat!

      • great thanks :)

  • I still have my Series 7 which I purchased in 2011. I was tempted by the Series 9, but then I watched this review comparison. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5ZAfRAS1g8

It's amazing how much quicker the Series 9 cuts compared to the Series 7, but in the end the video creator kept the Series 7 and sold off the Series 9 because he preferred how much closed it shaved compared to the Series 9.

  • I had one of these that I got at Costco for slightly cheaper, I believe (though they don't seem to have it at the moment). I bought it to shave my head, because I was sick of the warranty hassles of skull shavers (I went through 4 in about 18 months), and while it gave me a much closer shave, there were a couple drawbacks:
A - It took way longer to shave my head with this than with a skull shaver
B - You HAD to shave everyday because it did not like having hair longer than a day's growth

Mine ended up having a battery issue after about 4 months so I returned it, got a refund and went back to Skull Shavers. I think this was a fluke and not an indiation of their quality, so if you've got finer hair, or are not shaving your head, this probably doesn't apply to you

  • probably cheaper to just use a double edge razor hey

  • What's everyone's favourite Stubble trimmer? Preferably one which charges over USB-C (both at the Shaver and Charger end) so I can use it for travel as well?

  • Got it and love it thanks for sharing!

  • Can anyone who purchased one of these provide some feedback?

Specifically for neck shaving for sensitive skin, how well it cuts and does it irritate the skin? Are you happy with the purchase?

    Thank you :)

    • im a bit 50/50, i have sensitive skin and it gives a great smooth skin close shave and no irritation but i really struggle to get all the hair around the side of my neck. i dont think ive been able to get all hairs even passing 50 times im still on the fence on if i should return it or not youll never really know how well it works for you until you try it on your exact face shape and how your hair grows

do i think its worth $385 ….i couldnt say yes tbh but i had wet shaving so to me it kinda is, if it got all the hair then it would be a 10/10 but sadly thats not the case

    • just came back to say i tried my double edged razor today to compare and actually do prefer the braun, the braun gives me a closer and better shave to my skin, it just struggles to get all the hairs so i guess pick your poison
