Just make sure a JR pass is actually worth it before buying. Since their price increase last year the pass has become a lot less attractive and you should do the calculations to see if you'll actually save anything.

I used this one and for my two week itinerary it works out cheaper just to pay as I go.

Ye definitely do the calculations to compare. For my itinerary, it was still worth it even with the price increase

It's worth checking out regional JR passes too if you're spending a lot of time in one area. I.e. Hokkaido region as the Shinkansen only goes so far and there's plenty of JR lines.

  • Not worth it even at 10% off, after a 70% price hike last Oct.
Better just get on a domestic flight

Depending on price, the convenience of the train trumps the airport bollocks for me.

  • Ugh, I'm going in four months. Hopefully this comes up again in a month or so.

It probably isn't worth it even with the discount unless you are taking a lot of shinkansen. From memory in the past it was good value if you took more than 3 shinkansen rides but since the price hike I'm guessing you need to take a lot more rides before it makes sense.

Might make more sense to just get the shinkansen tickets without the pass.

  • Damn it got expensive

We recently looked at buying four of these for the family to make it to and from different cities in Japan. But when we added up individual train fares it seemed cheaper to buy individual tickets than to get the pass. Depends I guess on how many trains you'd be taking within the cities that accept the pass also.

  • Are area passes included?

    • no, just this one. Tried today

      • Yup same :(

  • Might be helpful to know if you book directly rather than through an agency like Klook, you can reserve seats online.
Downside is you still have to pick up the physical tickets to use for everything.
Im in Kyoto and booking my Shinkansen for Hiroshima online in my hotel room rn
