Pentax Q thread - post your pics, thoughts, useful info, etc.

It seems like a bunch of us just bought a Pentax Q from Ted's during their sale so why not have a place to discuss all things related to the Pentax Q. Please post pics and any thoughts you might have regarding the Pentax Q. Feel free to ask questions if you need any help, I'm sure people would be more than willing to help if they know the answer to your questions.

In case you weren't aware, Ted's just got another 100 cameras so check out this post http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/84561 for more info and the link to purchase the camera if you're interested. EDIT: Now they're out of stock.

If you bought one of these, please share your thoughts. I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks about the Q. I do like calling it 'the Q' :)

Comments

      • Thanks for offer, just bought one!

  • Took it out to test just now. Under the sun, I struggle to see anything on the screen.

  • People have been selling their Qs on eBay for $250 or less. You're not really making much money at that price.

  • +1

Finally, the day has come, my Q has arrived. Can't wait to get home and have a play!

Now patiently waiting for a post on a cracking Q zoom lens price…

  • alright i join the re-seller seat. pm me your offer, the more the better :)

sydney CBD meet up, lunch time, mon-fri, cash.

My C mount adapter just arrived (that was pretty quick). Based on some quick shots, it seems like most of my lenses will be okay to good on it. I've got:

    • TV Lens 3.5mm f1.4 (modified CS mount lens, now I have a nice little fisheye lens!)
    • Cosmicar 6mm f1.2 (this is the only one that sucks, image quality is bad even when stopped down)
    • Computar 12.5mm f1.3 (does pretty good macro assuming you've removed the focus screw)
    • Computar 25mm f1.3
    • Fujian 35mm f1.7
    • Elgeet 38mm f1.5 (sort of modified D mount lens, reeeeally good performer but focusing isn't smooth so I don't know how much I'll be using it)

The SR (shake reduction) is amazing. Put in the focal length and you're good to go. You really have to bork your shot pretty bad to take some blurry pics. It's crazy good.

Plus it records the focal length of your manual lenses (as long as you enter one) so no need to take notes on which manual lens I used since I can just look at the focal length.

And this camera cost just $200! Bloody amazing.

    • Hi.. Do you have any K mount lens? have you thought of getting the kmount adaptor as well ?

      • I don't have any K mount lenses but I might get an adapter for my Canon FD mount lenses after I come back from my holiday next month.

    • +1

I'm sure glad you posted this. I was looking at the Pentax Cosmicar 6/1.2. That is my ideal focal length. No wonder there aren't much info on adapting c-mount lenses on the Q. Apparently the Q's small photosites combined with the low resolution of the cctv lenses aren't a good match http://www.lensporn.net/2011/10/pentax-q-and-c-mount-lenses-….
I've read a post on the Pentaxforums saying there was a difference in IQ when the lens wasn't screwed all the way in. Maybe you can try that?

A guy from the Adorama blog said cinema lenses are better, like the Switar http://www.adorama.com/alc/0013716/article/How-to-Shoot-Pric… But these lenses sure aren't cheap.

I've already ordered a Computar 8.5/1.3 cctv lens (I know it's the same focal length, don't ask lol), Cosmicar 12/1.2 and a generic 6/1.4. I won't be getting the Cosmicar 6/1.2 that's for sure.

There's the Wesley 24/1.4 cctv lens that I was really impressed having used them on the E-PM1 and OM-D. The centre sharpness matched the Panasonic 20/1.7. It would be too long on the Q, but would make a good portrait lens.

      • Hi do you mean that we can fit in a CCTV lens on our PentaxQ? or make our own lens?

      • The whole thing about not screwing lenses in all the way, I think I've encountered that with some of them. I'll do more tests, maybe I can do something to the adapter so that lenses don't screw all the way in.

The Elgeet is a cine lens which is probably why I was getting really good results on it. They usually cost a lot though, almost as much as native lenses, so I don't know if I wanna go that route. After all, I can still use my Micro Four Thirds cams with my C mount lenses and get good results so it's not worth it for me to spend hundreds on a cine lens.

For the most part, I'll only really be using the fisheye on the Q (not the greatest but that lens cost me less than $5 so I'm not complaining) and maybe the Computar 25mm/Fujian 35mm if I need the reach.

I forgot to add that most of these lenses need to be stopped down a little to produce okay/good results but I'll test them by not screwing all the way in and see if I get better results.

        • Which lens less than $5? Ebay? How much for c mount adapter?

        • I bought it used from a guy that didn't know what it was. He was selling 5 CCTV lenses for $25.

The C mount adapter cost me under $7 on eBay.

        • U ve got very good shots of Melb :) Did u step sharpness all the way up? What's ur favourite setup? I dun think out of box the cam produced great shots. Thanks much.

        • Sharpness is +2 in the camera plus I applied some extra sharpness and also clarity for some of the pics in Lightroom.

      • Based on some quick tests of not screwing the lens all the way in, I think there's a tiny difference but not much. It might depend on the lens, I've only tried the 3.5mm fisheye, the Computar 12.5mm and the Fujian 35mm. Not screwing the lens all the way in would mean I'd be able to focus closer to my subjects so better macro performance. I'll have to try that out.

    • Hi BJ,

Is auto-focus still working with the C adapter? Sorry for the newbie questions but all the lenses above are CCTV lenses? Any wide angle lens you can recommend? 8.5mm is not wide enough for me. Ta.

      • Hi andri, sorry autofocus doesn't work anymore with the adapter. Most of the lenses above are CCTV lenses except the Elgeet which is an cine lens. If you want something wide, you'd probably wanna get something under 5mm. I haven't had much experience with anything that wide since I've mainly been buying above 12.5mm for my Micro Four Thirds cameras (anything too wide vignette's really bad on the Micro Four Thirds sensor) but if I end up getting some wide C mount lenses, I'll post my thoughts here.

I recieved mine today! Loving it, feels very solid in the hand. Does anyone know of an external viewfinder that is cheaper than the official Pentax one? Also, has anyone used a Canon EF Lens adaptor on one of these? Here's a quick test shot I took in the backyard - http://www.flickr.com/photos/robidee/8208388456/in/photostre…

    • I couldn't find cheap EVFs on ebay so I looked at optical ones. There are quite a few on there. Do a search on the Pentaxforums for the brands that match with the Q.

  • +1
  • i am thinking of getting a case for the Q, anyone got the case from Ted's? is it any good or any other case to recommend?

    • I personally don't like the buttons on the side of the case. I can only imagine it would annoyingly poke at my fingers/palm. I'm looking to get this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Real-Genuine-Cow-Leather-Camera-B… Seems to have better quality.

      And there's the Hakuba one http://www.hakubaphoto.jp/pentaxQ/ :)

      • Thanks.. I think the Hakuba one is better. At least the SD card and battery compartments are easily accessible.

    • I got the Teds GHT case today. Pretty good considering how cheap it is. It completely covers the camera so I can chuck the camera into a backpack and not worry about it.

The Hakuba one below looks nice but expensive, 4980 yen, that's around $58 plus delivery
Just noticed the Hakuba doesn't cover the LCD, nor the lens, defeats the purpose of having a case really.

The 8gb inca sdhc card that came with it is only class 6, with a write speed of 6mb/s, that's pretty ordinary so I'm going to sell it for a few bucks.

      • thanks Bitsurfr,
for the heads up for the GHT case, may I know if the battery and SDCard compartments are easily accessible on the Q when fitted with the Ted's case?

        • Short answer is no.

The bottom half of the case is slipped onto the body and screwed into the tripod socket, thus blocking the battery and SD slots. However, it's very easy to unscrew and remove, so I'm not too fussed about this, but access would have been nice ofcourse.

The other thing I like is that the case is somewhat rigid, so it offers pretty good protection

        • thanks for the fast feedback .. i guess it's only $25 bucks.. love it or hate it.. but it's only $25 and i am very tempted to get the ted's case :)

    • Nice photos. Just goes to show what any half decent camera do in the hands of a competent/experienced photographer.

      • Thanks! The camera makes it pretty easy to take some nice pics :)

        • How you finding the sharpness of the jpegs after adjusting in camera?

        • Yeah they're much better (at least, for me).

        • When you say adjusting for sharpness, do you mean setting the jpeg quality in the menu to three stars (highest setting)?
Just asking as I don't recall seeing a specific setting for sharpness

        • Adjusting sharpness is not straight forward in the Q. You need to adjust it via "custom image" or something (dun have the pentax with me) while you have the bright, normal, portrait options etc. You can define "Fine Sharpness" and "Sharpness" there.

        • Yep, what andri77 said :)

    • nice photos! where did you learn from? i need help my photos are sad

      • Thanks! :) I didn't really learn anywhere, just went out and took a lot of photos. Plus talked to a lot of photographers online and picked up a few things. It also helps to get to know your camera a lot.

  • I have difficulties using the Blur Control (esp level 3). It also blurred my subject randomly (like the hair or cheek of the person). Anyone got nice little tips? Thanks.

    • I haven't actually played with that setting just yet. I don't think I've even come across it. I'll need to play with my Q some more.

      • It is a supposed to be nice feature in that small camera. I read online review… not so good for that feature.

    • +1

Number 3 setting apparently will make the fake blurring too obvious. http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2011/09/27/the-pentax-q-digita… I just use number 1.

  • battery life is so short

    • Definitely get spares if this'll be your main camera. I took just under 150 pics in Melbourne and I didn't have to charge once during my 3 days there. In fact, the battery indicator was still green. But I turned it off whenever I wasn't using it, I wasn't playing with the settings a lot, and it wasn't my main camera.

      • +1

the missus wanted spare battery for this new little baby too.. went on ebay to take a look..

        link here:
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Battery-For-Pentax-D-LI68-Optio-A…

they are cheap as chips… also found out from this link that it's the same battery used in the FujiFilm F200EXR and a few other cameras.. we had this Fujifilm F200EXR a long time ago before it broke down!

went to find it .. found it.. took the battery out from the F200EXR to test on Pentax Q.. it fit perfectly and it works!!! yay!

got myself 2 spare batteries now!

        • Sweet! Thanks for the info.

        • Not a problem! Your original post on this $199 PentaxQ deal is the best!

    • Very nice, thanks for sharing! :)

  • I've been playing around with the Q tonight, it's pretty nice, but finding the AF pretty slow and it has trouble locking focus under indoor lighting when shooting portraits. However, it is quite sharp after bumping up the sharpness levels.

    • I've found that focus hunts quite a lot if you're shooting something closer to you but farther away objects seem okay.

  • If anyone still wants one please send me a message. Another impulse buy from OzB :)

    Thank you

    • Nice write up mate, hope the Q gives your many hours of enjoyment. I've sold my Q, decided it was a little too dinky for my liking and although the IQ was pretty good for the sensor size, it was nothing to write home about (as you have already stated). Now I need to decide what camera I should buy next…

      • Yeah to be honest, I don't think it'll ever be my main camera. At this point in time, the Micro Four Thirds system remains a much more attractive option with regards to image quality, size & lens lineup. I don't even think it'll get more use than the RX100 as my go everywhere camera. But I do like how Pentax Q, 8.5mm f1.9 lens & CCTV fisheye lens costs much less than a Samyang 7.5mm fisheye lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. And I like how I can fit it in my pocket so I can bring a fisheye shooter wherever I go. (I've been shooting fisheye shots inside grocery stores all weekend :P) I'll hang onto it at least until I get a better fisheye alternative.

        • Yeah obviously the price was the most attractive aspect of the Q for me, but there are a lot of "portable" options out there (s100/110, LX7, XZ2, X10, RX100 etc, not to mention the m43 options) at the moment that offer noticeable better IQ, sure they cost more, but personally I'm happy to pay extra for this. But agree the Q is great for camera enthusiasts given all the functions it offers & it was fun given it a try.

  • +1

Just a heads up for anyone looking for a nice C-mount lens (either for the Q or M4/3 cameras). Surplus Shed has the Computar 12.5mm f1.3 in stock again (although it used to be $30ish).

    http://www.surplusshed.com/pages/item/l3943.html

I love this lens on M4/3. It vignettes but a lot less than other C-mount lenses that are as wide. I need to play with it some more on the Q but image quality seems okay when stopped down.

    • i am a total nub to the photography world. what type of photography would this lens be useful. keep posting these random lens deals ^^ im forever on the lookout to get my 2nd!

      • On Micro Four Thirds cameras, this lens would be pretty wide angle. On the Pentax Q, it would be just a bit longer than the 01 Standard Prime lens that came with the $200 deal. The image you'd get would be more close up, probably would be nice for portraits although I haven't tried it much. Plus you gotta manual focus which isn't for everyone.

At f1.3, it's considered a fast lens (meaning it has a wide aperture and can thus let more light in) but this doesn't perform all that well when shot at its widest aperture on the Q (a bit soft). It's not bad as a low light lens on Micro Four Thirds though.

    • Do you mind posting some samples? Also curious how your other c-mount lenses perform. Any links? Cheers.

      • I've mainly been playing around with the fisheye lens but I'll post some pics when I get the chance. I'll go through existing pics when I get home to see what I have from the Computar 12.5mm and other lenses.

        • May I ask which fisheye lens you are using on the Q? Is it a C mount too? How much did you get it for? ha ha, too many questions… thanks heaps, BJ…

        • No probs, it's a modified CS mount lens. I got it bundled with some other lenses and I had no idea what it was at first. It screwed onto the C mount adapter but it wasn't focusing. I made it so that it goes deeper into the adapter and thus closer to the sensor.

          I think it's this http://www.eneo-security.com/item/5034/5000046/0/101628/a031…

Kinda tricky though to modify it and I don't even remember exactly how I did it.

I'll post sample pics when I get the chance. Hopefully tonight if nothing comes up.

  • I found that auto focus is slow in low light indoors, sometimes very hard to get it to focus. Does anyone else have this experience?

    • Yes, had the same issue. There were many a times that it would not let me take a photo (i.e. the shutter would be unresponsive) due to not being able to lock focus. Only solution was to re-focus until focus was achieved, was one of the annoying aspects of the camera.

      • I find manual focus on the 01 prime lens much easier than auto for close up shots… you should try…

        • me too, I just find it annoying that I have to go through the menus to switch manual and auto focus.

        • You can actually set the green dot button to be AF, then you can use the green button for AF and the shutter release button on top for manual shots…

        • Yeah I found manual focus to be pretty easy. I have the MF assist setting on so I first try to autofocus and then manual focus when it can't achieve auto focus. I like how it zooms in as soon as I turn the focus ring.

  • +3

I've posted some pics taken using the Computar 12.5mm f1.3 C-mount lens if anyone's interested.

    http://danielpua.tumblr.com/post/36660849254/flowers-camera-…

  • So it's been quite a while since I got the Q but I don't find myself shooting with it despite listing a huge list of reasons why I LOVE it haha.
Most (if not all) of the time I find myself grabbing my full frame, and whenever I grab the Q I end up lusting for the bokehliciousness. (call me a novice but I really do love the creativity of thin depth of field-or at least SOME of it D:)
During my recent street photography adventures I hardly made use of the creative options the Q has anyway.
I am not too knowledgeable on mirrorless cameras, can anyone suggest me a mirrorless
    With:
    Apsc sized sensor or close
    Viewfinder
Decent price (that's what makes it the hard part lol) second hand is an option

I may sell it off if I find a decent replacement or invest in some fun adaptors and lenses to reignite my love for the q haha

    • +1

Fujifilm X-E1 and Sony Nex-6 both in APSC sized sensor and they should be good… here is some X-E1 sample pics from a photographer in Taiwan. Review is in Chinese tho, but you can still see how it performs…

      http://www.wretch.cc/blog/wingmanzero/10342558
      http://www.wretch.cc/blog/wingmanzero/10342459

Another one is the Olympus OM-D E-M5, it is a M4/3 camera with smaller sensor. Here are how it performs with different lenses…

      12mm 2.0 and 45mm 1.8 Prime - http://robinwong.blogspot.com.au/2012/03/olympus-om-d-e-m5-r…
      60mm 2.8 Macro - http://robinwong.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/olympus-mzuiko-60mm…
      75mm 1.8 Prime - http://robinwong.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/olympus-mzuiko-75mm…

      Enjoy!!!

Not sure if the price level are decent enough tho… ha ha…

      • I had similar feelings for the Q after using it for 1 day, I decided although it was small & compact, I always felt restricted by the photos I could get given the tiny sensor. So I decided to let it go since I knew I would never use the Q's creative options and rather have the funds for something with a larger sensor…

        • But I do think the Q should be good for tele and macro shots… Furthermore, it is the only camera which can let you use legacy D-mount cine lens on it… altho i am not sure how good it will perform… i am still waiting for my adapter to come.

        • I think this is the exact appeal of the Q to me. I just want instagram/lomo style shots with IQ that is above what phone cameras can give. And if the 5-15mm proves to be as good as the 8.5mm I wouldn't mind using the Q for landscapes as well.
I bought a generic 6mm 1.4 cctv lens off eBay and IQ is much better than I expected. Barrel distortion and purple fringing is butt-ugly but can be corrected in LR. I might buy the Wesley 24/1.4 again. It's gone from eBay now- I suspect people on here snapped up the remaining few when I commented on how well it performs lol. I also have a Pentax 12/1.2 that will not focus to infinity. Some milling seems to be required so the rear element sits closer to the sensor.

  • has anyone tried mounting (with an adapter) the Q to canon ef lenses? 200 -> 1100mm LOL
just wanted to try it, was wondering if it produces useable shots haha

  • +1

Some pics with the Q and the TV Lens 3.5mm f1.4 fisheye lens. This combo is a lot of fun.

    http://danielpua.tumblr.com/post/37081004917/fisheye-fun-cam…

    • Cool. How did you modify the mount?

    • I think there is CS to C adapter out there on eBay right? Or this is a totally different mod?

      • I could only find a c-cs adapter. CS lenses have a shorter flange distance, correct me if I'm wrong. One method I'm guessing is to sand the centre piece of the C-Q adapter. The adapter that I bought off eBay is a 2-piece one.

        • I filed the rear of the lens down (it's plastic so no big deal) until it went into the C-mount adapter deep enough. It's a little tricky though and I don't even remember exactly how I did it but not physically hard to do once you figure out what you're doing.

  • I'm totally new to the interchangerble lens world, but picked up a q the other week, can anyone let me know if they have any experience with the cheap bk lens and filter kits on eBay? Ufo101 is selling some out of HK. Any advice appreciated.

  • No text.

  • Hi guys~~ Is there any one who would like to sell it?
    Can I have it?

    • Chadstone Ted's in Vic had one new one left yesterday - still $199

    • Pls check with Elizabeth Street VIC and they still have a couple of Qs

  • Pm me. I'm looking to sell mine as my sister wants something with a zoom function.

  • Anyone know of a cheapish zoom lens? Preferably not one that cost more than the camera itself.

  • +1

I just came back from a month long vacation and I ended up using the Q quite a lot. It usually wasn't my main camera (the Sony RX100 got the most use and the Micro Four Thirds gar got a lot of use during our mini trips) but there were times when we'd just go out to get coffee or dinner and it was the only camera I brought with me. The 01 Standard Prime did great and I enjoyed using my C-mount fisheye lens a lot. I even got my old

I took so many pics during the trip and I've still gotta go through them all but here's a few pics using the Q.

For those looking for a cheapish zoom lens, maybe check out some C-mount/CCTV lenses if you don't mind manual focusing (which I've found to be easy on the Q). Either that or just use the money you'd spend on one of the expensive Q lenses and get a compact camera. I often had the Pentax Q and Sony RX100 combo when going out and it worked great. Too bad the Q lenses aren't priced attractively.

    • im actually think wider lens will be better for Q

      • I like to shoot wide so I'd agree with that. Also, most of my C-mount lenses are telephoto on the Q so the telephoto end is covered but I don't have many options for a wide lens on the Q.

    • "The 01 Standard Prime did great and I enjoyed using my C-mount fisheye lens a lot. I even got my old…."

what was the end to that sentence BJ?

      • Ooops :p I meant to say that I got my old C-mount Cosmicar 25mm f1.8 lens and that seems to be a good performer even when shot wide open. As I said in another earlier post, I'll need to do more testing since I only shot with it briefly during my trip. In case anyone is interested, I'll post pics taken using the various lenses when I get around to going through my holiday snaps.

  • By the way, the Pentax/Cosmicar 25mm f1.8 C-mount lens seems to be a good performer on the Q. I was surprised because I much preferred the Computar 25mm f1.3 than the Cosmicar on Micro Four Thirds but it's the opposite on the Q. I'll have to go out and shoot with both one of these days so I can test them side by side.
