Toshiba 47VL900A 47" FHD 3D LED $696.50 ($1999RRP) after Cashback @ JB Hi-Fi

1190

Seems to be an awesome deal for a 47" FullHD Smart 3D TV. This is passive 3D with dual full screen play mode, which means 2 players can play a game and get a full screen to themselves. It also comes with the wireless dongle I believe to connect to your network for all the smart features. I think it also comes with 4 pairs of glasses, at least the 55" does. 100hz native refresh rate with 400AMR

Price is $846.60, but Toshiba are offering $150 cash back which brings it down to $696.50.
This info can be found at https://redemption.isd.toshiba.com.au/Terms/TOSHIBA%202012%2…

The 55" is also available for $1356.50 and you get $200 cashback on that bringing it to $1156.50

Price is also available in store, or free shipping apparently

  • any good review on this model?

  • Seems like a great buy on the surface.. but see last 2 comments here.. no 1080p over hdmi?? Me confused…
    http://www.avforums.com/reviews/Toshiba-VL963-VL963B-42VL963…

  • The 'cashback' is a prepaid debit mastercard.
Tv looks incredible and is great for split screen Cod, Halo, Minecraft etc

The review above must be europe or usa as i saw same model and it said active 3d where this is passive

    • +3

At least it's not a gift card.

    • +2

A debit card is as good of value as real cash. I'd rather a card than cash

      • +6

you'd prefer a card you can use most places to cash you can use anywhere? ok

        • +11

Cash is too disposable, and when I carry it i tend to spend it quicker. Can also use the debit card for online purchase, try shoving a $20 note down the phone line.

        • +3

Try buying a hotdog from a street vendor at 2am with a card…

        • +4

If ur on the street looking for hot
Dogs at 2am better not have cash on u

        • +20

2am is kebab time, not hotdog time.

        • mmmm Kebab!

        • I think you mean souvlaki or yiros ;)

        • Nope, it's a kebab - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kebab#D.C3.B6ner

Just like the skewered meats are called "Shish Kebabs" the meat in a wrap is named a "Döner Kebab"

        • +2

Depends on which part Australia you come from. Here in SA, it would probably be the Greek version, which we call yiros.

  • +1

200 MHz refresh should have made this awesome. But at this price, it is a total steal. I hope Toshi's quality is better than the generic brands. +ve from me.

    • +3

200 000 000 cycles per second would be nice hey!
      ;)

      • lol, now I realised.
        * 200 Hz.
Too much units to remember :)

  • +1

For info, I have tried using cinema glasses on a passive LG, and it worked fine. I think passive is the way to go.

    • Read some reviews comparing passive and active 3d, both aren't perfect. Passive has lines that is claimed visible when you sit near the tv and Samsung & Sony argued of LG passive 3D display is in fact 720P instead of 1080p but has no issue with brightness and flickers that active has.

      • True. Though LG claims it to be Full HD now and got some certifications in Europe.
        http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1…

They have also rolled out updates for that for all existing 3d TVs few months back.

Also watching TV within a metre can display lines, otherwise, 2-2.5 metres distance for a 47" inch gives you great Picture quality.

Cheap glasses and less flickering is the +ve for Passive 3D.

    • why down vote?

  • Does anybody know if this is actually a great TV and/or deal? I've read the UK review ilikecheapcrap posted but it seems to be a different TV model number.

  • Looks good deal:) How about the cost of 3d glasses for this tv. Are glasses inlcuded in the box ????. Any one bought this from JBHIFI ?

  • +1

Disappointed…..I don't need another TV bargain! Nice find OP.

    • omg, stop thinking about it..,,the 24" in your childs room is fine, it does not need to be replaced with a 47"!!

      • +2

Yeah thats overkill, the kid will be spoilt and scarred for life if you do that.

However if you put one in front of your bath you might use it more than using showers thereby saving a valuable natural resource for the country and doing your part to create a sustainable future for the kid…:P

  • Any reviews for the Toshiba 55VL900?

  • Purchased one - Carseldine JB Hi Fi doesn't have them on the floor, but they had a few out back.
They have the 55" on display and it looked pretty good, although obviously not calibrated.

This price might only be for today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday) as they have a 15% off on all TV's (except Soniq) and when queried about this, they advised that the $846.60 included the 15% off - although they might be telling me pokies as the guy who did up the order was complaining that the TV was very cheap, cheaper than it should be.

So my suggestion is purchase quickly!

    • +1

@whzzz28, does it come with the wireless dongle? thanks.

why am I down-voted? the OP mentions that he believes that it comes with the dongle. i just wanted a confirmation.

      • Don't know why you were downvoted either. I want to know this too. It would be great if whzz28 could let us know.

      • Late reply,
Yes it comes with the wireless dongle, a/b/g/n capable. A little on the chuncky side but works fine.

  • no reviews :{

  • +1

    ok, just saw it in-store

    1. Alongside a 46" Samsung - the Samsung looked a lot better, much more detail in the picture and with colors, of course at a much higher price as well.

    2. The online price already includes 15% off @ $846.60, in-store price was $996 less 15% to be the same…they can't be fooled!

Great price, but there are brands with better picture quality if that concerns you!

    • +1

      Deleted.

  • +2

Just don't expect there is any firmware upgrade from Toshiba. Bought a Toshiba tablet and has never got and update to ICS. Will never buy a Toshiba product!

  • These prices are just insane. Great if you got room for (another) one!

  • just had a look at it in person

the picture quality does look as good as sony or samsung

    • Does or doesn't? Your phrasing makes it seem like you intended to say it doesn't =S

      • +3

        yes, i made a typo

        It should be doesn't.

It is less sharper than sony or samsung

        Colours aren't as vibrant

  • Can anyone confirm if this comes with the 4 free 3D glasses? The 55" does but there is no mention of 3D glasses with this model.

    • +1

      4 pairs, I asked in-store

      • coops1, did you ask if it comes with the wireless dongle?

        • yes, wireless dongle as well, it was listed on the ticket price as included.

        • thanks, coops1

    • +1

There only $1.00 at the cinema and work fine on passive 3D

    • it says 47" includes 4 pairs of 3d glasses on the JB catalogue

  • how are they at playing mkv's? Hit and miss, or almost everything? How about DTS?

    • Like most TV's this one doesn't seem to play some MKV's, though support for the container is certainly there. Some files have no audio, others cut off on the video at certain points.

Certainly no replacement for a decent media player I think - unless a firmware upgrade fixes it.

  • Think I might go get one of these in the morning. Hope the JBHIFI near me has stock. I was going to get a 40 inch Samsung Series 6 for $25 more than this, but for $25 savings, 7 more inches and 3D I think this deal looks perfect. Thanks OP

  • UK model numbers are 55VL963B and 47VL963B.
Reviews for the 55 look OK given the price after cashback -though gamers may need to be careful.

    • Yeah not a crash hot TV but much better than Kogan type trash. Uses LG panels and processor without producing LG TV picture quality…

  • Dad has a passive LG tv and it's much easier for me to view personally, i hate the flicker you can get from active 3d, it makes me go wonky. I have no difficulty with passive 3d unless the image comes wayyyyy out in front of the tv. Also the argument about losing lines? I'm pretty picky and it's very hard to tell any difference unless you get very close to the tv.

    passive = win.

    • with passive, I noticed the picture quality was interlaced on the LG model

  • will pass this one and wait for 55" led to get sub 1000. tempting deal though.

  • +1

I bought a 40TL900A a couple of months back for more than this. The only issue that i have with this panel is that it tales a while to get he screen to turn on from standby. Im not sure if its my set up, but its a bit slow (if you are the impatient kind). I dont watch free to air and use it 99% with my media pc connected through my onkyo amp via hdmi, controlling both amp and tv via 1 remote - not sure if this is the reason why it takes so long.

Overall, im happy with my screen and it works well. Once home, you cant tell the difference between the other brands ;)

  • Dare I ask, but how does this compare to the Kogan http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/46-led-tv-3D-full-hd-pvr/?

  • So tempted…

Not sure if it's worth the upgrade from my 5 year old Samsung 42" plasma. Might have to wait for a bigger TV to go on sale e.g. 55".

  • Bought one this morning. It's fantastic, never owned a 3D TV before :)

    • How does it perform in 2D?

      Cheers

      • +1

Looks pretty good it's hard to say I've never been an owner of good TV's before, looked as good as any of the Samsungs or Panasonics around it I thought.

        • Thanks!

Any comments on this link.. see last 2, thanks: http://www.avforums.com/reviews/Toshiba-VL963-VL963B-42VL963…

Yeh that dude is right. See this snippet from the manual. It doesn't support 1080p for PC.

      http://postimage.org/image/kh0k77xvb/

      • Can confirm that it does indeed support 1080P over HDMI from a laptop. So no issues there.

  • Not really interested in the 3D function. Would you guys recommend something else?

  • +1

Big thanks as I was considering an 55" lg lm16410 for about $1450. I ordered a 55" toshiba at the local JB. They weren't aware of the cashback offer until informed.
It's hard to make critical comparisons of picture quality in the shop, but looked good.
Cant wait to try the dual play game mode.

  • +1

went today to check it out today as I was interested….
Picture was rather dull compared to other brands in the store….
I have asked them if we could try and adjust the picture before I buy it but staff member said that screen can be adjusted a lot but if will still be rather dull……
Go figure…. walked out without TV…

    • Can't be right!. I will take Toshiba over LG or Samsung any day. I think TV displays in Aussie stores are crappiest in the world . Impossible to compare the picture quality at stores.

      • +1

Are you for real dude? Toshy laptops are awesome sure, but when it comes to tvs, Sammy and LG any day. Toshiba use LG panels on these TVs above and same processor but fail to render the same LG results for blacks and SD quality.

Currently have LG LED and Sammy after I had to return the uninspiring Toshy.

For someone who hasn't experienced big LCD LEDs before, they wouldn't know the difference. For the price, not bad I say, certainly mych better than wasting time on Kogans and Bauhns etc

    • +1

He is right, my observation with this model precisely.

  • The best full hd tv's in the world are the Panasonic VT50 series (plasma) and the Sony HX850 series (LED).
While not being close to the above 2 for picture quality, this Toshiba is pretty solid and has a great price.

  • Bought this today and was excited to get home, connect it up to our network and see how it works with playing .avi's and .mkv's from our WDSHARESPACE media server. To date, I continually get the error, media playback error. Any one here had a similar problem and managed to get it resolved?

    • +1

Read reviews above DLNA and streaming on these is $#!te, to the extent of being unusable.

Don't hedge your bets on Toshiba providing firmware upgrades either. You get what you pay for in this instance unfortunately :(

    • I havent had an issue with dlna yet. I use serviio on my pc's, and so far the Toshiba has played everything, and very well, including some very large files of 10GB+

  • Man having a hard time trying to decide, 47" or 55". Current old 33" CRT viewing range is is 2.8 Metres which can be extended to 3.3 to 3.4 metres but to CRT massive size… Went to the store to simulate viewing distance.. Seems like on 55" my eyes where hunting around more and 47" eyes was more centred.. 47" seems more logical but dont want to regret not getting 55" haha! hard to decide when its not in your house..

Any help deciding from other ppls experiences?

    • My dilemma also. Moving from a 37" which is fine as a tv, but movies are not immersive. So we've decided to go with the 55" to ensure we stay impressed with movies and 3D.

      • True stay on the big side to be impressed by movies longer.. but hmm thinking about eye strain not being use to so big. yeah ha! decisions.. Whats your viewing distance btw?

        • We're 2 - 3 metres away for the set. I think I saw info from Toshiba to say 2.1 metres minimum for the 55".

  • +1

I spent a while in-store deliberating over this TV after looking for something like this for months.

After playing with the lighting between this and the Samsung (at ~$1250 inc 15% discount) and I got this reproducing some pretty comparative quality. The Samsung was still better, but the Toshiba got pretty darn close.

I bought the Toshiba, and it's been 24h now and it's been fantastic for the price. Very happy so far.

    • Yeah I think the Samsung would probably have better Smart TV apps but I think the warranty is only 12 months? Toshiba warranty is 5 years.. Cool glad your happy I think I might order online for 55"

      • standard 2 yrs parts + labour warranty from Toshiba? Please tell me how to get 5 years for free?

        • Strange, there was a special promo that ended in october for 5 years warranty.. http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/five-years-warranty

JB sales staff told me it has 5 years warranty plus big brown box advertise 60 months warranty..

ha! dunno who to believe. but I guess even if it has 2 years thats still good.

      • I can confirm that the standard warranty included is 2 years, but JB are offering an additional 2 years (for 4 years total) for $89

        • The guy at JB told me it was 12 months warranty and an extra 2 years for $89. He dropped the extended warranty down to $40 so I got that too.

        • can you upload a photo of your receipt, or store and rep name, as the jb guy @ noarlunga said they couldnt discount ext warr ! paid for it already. ta

        • was it @ WOLLONGONG CENTRAL JB HI-FI STORE ?. just want my jb store 2 do the same ! ta

        • Probably differs from sales rep to sales rep. depending on their mood and knowledge.

        • It was at that store. I can get a photo of the receipt of you would like when I get back to Wollongong in a couple of days.

        • appreciated , it should be in this morning (transfer from another branch), will mention the store, c what they do !. ta

        • they said they dont discount warr as its thru another provider !

    • Yeah, I spent like 2 hours in store deliberating this purchase. Originally, the TV did look dull in store. But the guy serving me let me use the remote to change it around. After a few adjustments, I got this set looking a lot better and decided to buy it. I took some high res videos in on a usb stick to check media player playback also, played all I put through it, avi, mkv, and mp4. I also purchased the LG Dual View glasses to play the dual view games, and it works surprisingly good. But you can still see a little bit of each others screens. Sport looks very good on this set, I watched the soccer on Foxtel HD, and it kept up fine with very good colour reproduction and no real stepping/artifacting

      • Hi, would you mind telling me your settings? I'm no visual-phile(?? is that the word?) so I don't know how to set my tv to its optimal settings.

  • +1

Bought one today, finally registered just to thank the OP! :)

  • ha! purchased mine last night at 10pm after debating all day between 47" and 55".. 55" won :)

Does anyone know if JB Courier call to pre-arrange delivery date/time if ordered from online?
