    • All the external USB HDD plug packs I've seen come with interchangeable plugs for US, UK & AU. I don't think there is any difference in the plug pack itself.

bah, must resist being ozbargained and replacing my 7x 3TB hitachi drives… arghhh

  • I'm going to be outta cash fast the way this week is going.

We call these Deathstar in our backup NASes at work, these hard drives are unreliable. Only use them in a raid setup with integrity.

That said, I'm buying 4, and hoping they have local warranty…

The neg is just to warn people that these appear to have a reasonably high failure rate compared to others.

    • +3

Sorry, but that seems like a completely inappropriate neg

"Defective Product" is perfectly valid. Out of the ~24 of these we run, we have approximately one die per month.

        • +2

Then why are you buying a defective product?

        • +1

But what is being sold here is not a defective product. Just a product that (in your experience) is unreliable. I'm a little confused as to why you bought any if you thought they are unreliable.. doesn't matter how big/cheap a HDD is if you think it's a lemon you wouldn't normally buy one.

      • +1

Not sure whether or not the neg is appropriate, but the logic isn't. You get the same sort of anecdotes - from individual stories through to the "we use hundreds at work" ones - for every brand/model drive, which should you tell you something far more extensive and controlled would be needed to make reliable distinctions between them on reliability.

        • Not sure whether or not the neg is appropriate, but the logic isn't.

Yeah, I'm still trying to get my head around the concept that 'these are shit but I'm still buying 4…huh???'

        • +2

Yeah, I'm still trying to get my head around the concept that 'these are shit but I'm still buying 4…huh???'

Obviously the shit to price to capacity ratio isn't great enough to prevent purchase. :)

You're thinking of the old Deskstars with the thermal exhaust port flaw.
These new models are fully operational.

      • So thats why my old 2tb deskstar died? It was the hottest drive in my case and lasted 14months before death.

        • +1

Yeah, the ray shielding they used just wasn't up to scratch.

      • Deathstars have always been a problem, since the day of their release, even when owned by IBM.

  • Freakin' awesome deal. Pity I decked out with an array (literally) of 3TB drives only days ago! :(

    • Same here… just picked up 3x 3TB Reds for my FlexRaid server.. So if I want to buy any of these I need to buy more then one.

  • +1

Just bought two to go in an N40L… now just to wait for shopping express to have another N40L sale…
    2 drives was AU$414.48 shipped.

    Thanks OP.

Just a heads up to everyone, these drives run quite hot even with active cooling, in a micro server expect load drive temps of 40-50c.

    • That used to worry me, but ever since google released their report a while back which pretty much said drive temperature didnt impact the lifetime much, i try to put it out of my head.

      • +2

It depends, sustained temps above 45c does degrade, the biggest issue is fluctuating temps, rather then a fairly constant temp like googles data centre is kept.

    • Do you know what temp WD Red/Green drives run at for comparison?

Edit: Found it. Half way down the page: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/red-wd20efrx-wd30efrx-na…

Oh so tempted to get 4 of these drives for my second N40L, but given it will be running 24x7 I think I'd prefer to grab 4 eco type drives like the Deskstar 5K4000.

Don't really need the 7200rpm performance for storage drives. My existing N36L with 4x2 WD Green drives already generates plenty of heat!

    • +1

Funny how the 5K4000 drives are $240 - more expensive than the 7200rpm drive lol.

Wonder if they would do a deal on the 5400rpm drives if asked?

  • added 1 for my hp40nl i got a few weeks back!

  • Sweet it's been a long time since someone had a good sale on an internal drive. I was tempted to buy 2 to save on combined postage but I ended up only getting one. Thanks

  • +1

at the going market rate of $50 per TB this is a good deal…. but Im not really confident of the brand maker..

    • Hitachi are one of the best brands in hard drives and now Western Digital own the company.

  • I know a guy mentioned it above saying the warranty will be fine but can anyone explain this further.. Will these still have warranty? Thanks

    • looks like you will need to ship it back to the US if you have any warranty issues.

If this is the case you better dam well be 100% certain its a drive error

      • -1

international warranty, so you ship it to thailand, about 35 bucks, least thats what it costs me to send drives to WD for warranty.

        • so at this price we are under what HDD prices were before the tsunami hit?

          can anyone remember?

        • Not quite, from memory I think a few local vendors got 3TB down to around ~$110 just before the shit hit the fan, and I was the one to find the 3TB $108 B&H 5K3000 deal in July last year when local 3TB were still ~$170.

        • wasnt it floods from rain/typhoons etc not a tsunami? flooded the factorys in thailand for a couple weeks.

        • Some of the drive motors were made in the Japan tsunami area.

  • Has anyone tried these in a Buffalo Linkstation Pro Quad (LS-QVL) NAS?

    • Got my drive a couple of days ago and I can confirm that it works fine in the Buffalo Linkstation Pro Quad (LS-QVL) NAS.

  • Just got one. Hitachi was bought out by WD in March this year if I'm not mistaken.

  • I suggest buying 2, use 1 to backup

    • +2

I suggest not using a drive with the same or similar manufacturing date (or preferably even the same manufacturer) as a backup for another drive.

  • +1 for 4TB!! I still remember getting my first HDD, 1GB Seagate!

  • big thanks OP!

  • I hate having hard drives posted, but at this price I'm making an exception.

  • +1

bought 4 x 4TBs and 64GB ultra microSD from here:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/886007-REG/SanDisk_sds…

    Thank you to the OP.

    • Damn that's quick. The 4 hard disks I ordered are already in Sydney!

  • -1

First two orders showed up a few hours ago :)

  • Online cart just reopened so I grabbed 3x Drives to add to my server.

Also want to confirm, I found out these drives have International Warranty.

  • my drive just arrived in Sydney

  • Am I better off getting this 4TB HDD to put into my PC or your average 3TB Western Digital from MSY?

    • Bigger is better? Assuming its not your OS drive.

    • A 3TB WD Green from MSY is cheaper, quieter and probably less hassle to get replaced if it fails in its first year or so. So unless you'll need the space in the near future…

    • i would avoid the green drives like the plague - they are so SLOW

  • My order is already in Oz Customs!

  • does it definitely end in 3 days? wheres the info on the date that it stops?

  • How long has it taken for you guys to get your drives? and when did you place your order?

I just checked the tracking on mine and it says…

    Scheduled Delivery:
Monday, 12/03/2012, By End of Day

I placed my order on 24/11/2012… Does that seem about right?

    • AFAIK, americans use MM/DD/YY, which would make sense for the UPS shipping for the 3rd of December.

  • Got mine two day. That was fast Melbourne

  • drives arrived today. the little N36L now has 16GB RAM, 16TB drives running ESXi 5.1 (internal USB Boot) with vmfs5 and 14.55TB available after formatting using default 1MB Block size.

    • lol dunno why someone would neg you but my new N40L will be pretty similar lol.

How's the heat of the drives inside the microserver?

      • how do I check that? I am running headless. is it a screen on vsphere client?

        • I'm not sure how to actually check - I'm guessing some sort of temperature monitoring program?

But more generally, do the drives generate much heat?

        • +1

if I could run this on command line
          serverHP:~$ sudo hddtemp /dev/sda
          /dev/sda: VB0250EAVER: 27°C

  • Hi all, just received mine and wasnt expecting to arrive so quickly.
have a qu… im installing my drive into one of these n40l. from my understanding its just a simple plug and play right?
it should pick up the drive. can someone help, what am i missing here?

ive built computers before, and id thought it be the same.
any pointers or places to check?
    thanks

  • You got to format it.

Right click my computer>manage>disk management>follow the prompts.

  • damn wish this deal was here a couple weeks ago before I splurged on 4x WD 3TB Red's for my N40L …working well but I would've taken these over them for this price

  • +1

FYI on Temps - I've got six in a well ventilated Mini Tower and they sit around 35degrees cent and four in a small e-sata enclosure on my WHS box where they run around 45degrees (and if anything a couple of degrees cooler than the WD 2TB Greens). These temps are under load for 8 hours (backing up from one pool to another)

  • my 2 x drives arrived yesterday. very fast delivery!

  • EXPIRED: $269 SHOWING NOW :(

    • Just got another 2 in before the price rise :)

    • And now the flipping begins, and people raged at me for buying a large number for personal use
