  • http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/85056 - has been known for a while.

    Basically $20 off all models.

  • Do these even work with an Australian IP? Wouldn't you need to use a VPN?

    • I would expect so. Content providers like Netflix aren't available from outside the US unless you use some mechanism to hide your origin.

    • Just use unblock-us. Less screwing around then a VPN!

      • Can u stream 1080p HD vdo with unblock-us? How can u signup for netflix? And last Q..is quickflix worth a try?

        • +2

Yes, it streams 1080P video fine (as long as your connection is fast enough to the US to begin with). Yes, using the unblock-us DNS you can sign up with Netflix no worries.
QuickFlix? Wouldn't even waste my time, over priced and crap compared to Netflix. Only people who'd use Quickflix I'd assume is people who don't know how to get Netflix.

        • How do u signup for netflix without US credit card and valid zip code?

        • Find any zip code and put you aussie card preferably amex and you are set.

  • Noob question here, I have a htpc a usenet account and a vpn. I am intereted in the roku, but wonder what benefit would I get from this?

    Thanks.

    • +1

I have the same, except I have unblock-us as opposed to a VPN. With using my HTPC with XBMC, I find the Hulu app works well for it, but it's tedious.
Have tried Neflix on it just using the browser and would just rather a device where I can use it with a remote and it just 'works'. So I can leave my HTPC for usenet downloads. To me I can justify the $70 for it as I'll basically only be using it for Netflix, not really interested in Hulu after watching it, stuff I need I can just get off usenet. It's more the documentaries on Netflix that I like, more something I can just watch whenever I want and don't have to 'plan' it beforehand.

      Sorry for the essay haha.

  • Does this work like a media player like stream stuff from pc or usb? Cant see any mention of usb port in description?

      • So, is that a yes? (like Boxee Box?)

        • Done some reading you need to buy a app to stream from PC and this model doesn't have a USB port only the XS model has a USB port

        • Maybe the other models?

        • looks like only if you are running Plex. Damn.

  • I've got the Roku XD and I love it. got Netflix, Amazon Instant, and use to have Hulu but didn't like the ads. Also running Plex from my HP n40l server, all the entertainment you could need. Through Plex you can also grab Youtube and Apple Movie trailers. The Apple TV is a joke unless you buy all your media from iTunes.

    • My media is on a NAS. I can install Plex on my pc, run the app on Roku, and then stream my own content, correct?

Also, is the only differance between Roku HD and Roku 2 XD,….1080p?

One downside could be that they need your credit card number…

  • pity you can't enter a VPN directly into the box, for when you are using an internet connection that you dont have access to the router settings..
