Western Digital 4TB My Book Essential External Hard Drive USB 3.0 & 2.0 $247 @ JB Hi-Fi

200

Looks like 4TB hard drives are already dropping in price!

From 29 Nov through 24 Dec JB HiFi has the Western Digital 4TB external hard drive for $247 - the cheapest price going according to staticICE! RRP is $299 and it looks like shipping is free online also.

From a cost per TB pespective, these are NOT the cheapest drives (2TB wins that fight), but for those needing 4TB in one unit it's a prime candidate. This is about $29 more expensive than the recent popular Hitachi 4TB deal (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/85502), however this drive is external, and doesn't require international postage.

  • The link you provided is saying $299 for the WD My Book Essential 4TB External Hard Drive .

Edit: And I need to read the description more… :) I edited your post to make the dates stand out a little more.

haha, thanks Chris. I was wondering how long it'd take before someone didn't realise the start date. :)

  • Great find, thanks!

  • Nice - how much was that one from the US the other day?

A little cheaper, but being able to take this back to JB is worth the extra

http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/85502 - Different brand, $29 cheaper, and you have to wait for it come from the US. JB's looks like a good deal.

      • Also internal vs external.

  • Nice, but why would you buy a 4tb now? It's far from the sweet spot. Give it another 6 months.

Best example I can give is one that's often applied to me - when I move overseas I want to take one drive. They weight a good amount, so it's not practical to take, for example, 2 x 2TB. You also need to consider power consumption - for example, powering one drive @ 4TB will be less than two drives @ 2TB each.

      • what?

Gav explanation was pretty simple. People dont mind paying a premium for more convenience in certain situations.

        • i agree. i have 3 x 3tb drives, and the frustration and clutter with having so many cables and power plugs is overwhelming…

          You need less porn dude.

        • Well you could always get a NAS and put the drives into it…

      • Good point Gav. I'm afraid I am now a portable HDD snob since I got my HP microserver for less than $200. I just use a 1 TB 2.5" portable for travel.

  • can you remove the drives from these?

  • Be aware that some older BIOSes don't like drives this big. I have a Lenovo where I originally had to unplug my 4TB drive before it would boot and with some tweaking it would boot fine but not recognise the drive until I power cycled it or removed and reinserted the USB cable.

  • Someone call me when they reach $160-180.

The prices seems to be almost in a free fall, so that shouldn't take too long. And like bargdebarg above said, 4TB is definitely not the in the sweet spot yet. I will be getting a couple of 4TB drives myself in the near future, but just not quite yet.
