  • Just bought 4, thanks.

  • Had to retry about 4 times before it went through.

  • The site's being a bit funny t the moment - if you search for "Surge Interceptor" on their main website, it comes up easy enough though. Just got myself 2 :)

  • got 2, no problems here. Thanks!

    • same.

paid $28 or $29 each when they were staff sale (someone bought for me) a couple years back…$20 even better!

  • Got one, not sure if the 1.8 metre phone and F-type coax patch cables are useful though.

  • +1

Big + from me - bought 4 …. 2 I have an immediate use for (replacing existing plain 'ol powerboards) and the others as spares and at $20 its the cheapest insurance policy you can get for your expensive electrical items!.

Surge protectors are a bit like backups - most people realise they need one and then it's too late…

  • Saw this on the "Specs" page:

    Circuit Breaker 0.4166666666666667

    Uhh… What? 5/12 of a circuit breaker?

  • Great deal! Don't forget to use your Wish giftcards if you got them at 5% off

  • bought 2. Thanks

  • Yeah,
It says page not found but Dicky has sent me an Order Confirmation e-mail.
    ????
    I'll wait and see.
    Hope it went tru OK.

  • Just purchased two, thanks for the heads up.

  • -1

I bought 2 from COTD (Bosston brand) with their own individual switches. Are these any better?
Wish these 2 have individual switches too.
Will probably get 2 of these anyway.

  • So can someone enlighten me as to why this has +200 votes? I see it has been previously mentioned as $40 to help justify the deal but don't understand why so many people on ozbargain were after a surge protector??

    • +2

At OzBargain, you don't need a reason to get in on a good deal. I'm more curious whether they'll honour the order as it's mentioned for "1st 400 customers only. It'll be even better if they were phasing out this model, run out of stock and replace the unit ordered with the newer ones.

      • The limit seems to just be a gimmick by DSE to convince those who are borderline buyers. Not a very good practice imo

    • +1

With the number of electronics OzBargainers buy, it's not a surprise to me at all the lots of people are after a surge protector. Plus, at $19, it's not much more than a decent powerboard, so why not?

  • I've got one of these powerboards and they are actually quite good. I think I got it for roughly the same price.

  • hi how does this one compare to the one below?
    http://www.esold.com.au/arista-8-port-powerboard-individual-…
This one has individual switches, USB and ethernet.

    • -1

I own two of them. I can sell them to you for $10 each if you are in Brisbane..

      • What's wrong with Arista powerboards?

      • That good huh?

    • Warranty?

  • I had to jump on the bandwagon as and bought one - must be a good deal with this many conversations about how many ppl bought it. This will replace a dodgy surge protector that I got from Catch of the Day website. The brand is a Bosston and it went for about $27 but it never really worked properly, seems to have a mind of it's own, when you switch it on it sometimes lights up and sometimes doesn't. And then lately, when plugging it into particular sockets, it just turns all the power in the house off. Happens every time. I have bought 2 eletrical items from catch of the day and both times, they have been faulty. Good thing is that I was able to get a refund on one of the items. So much trouble though. I have learnt my lesson… Better to get it somewhere that's known for it's quality and easier to return.

    • Oh dear, that's not what i wanted to hear. I bought 2 of those Bosston surge protectors myself from COTD, but haven't used them yet. Sounds like i shouldn't be.
Just wish these DS ones had individual switches.

      • I dont see the point in individual switches, such a pain and for what. Just get a Huntkey Master/Slave for $29 from PCCG (MSY might have them too, they have the no master/slave for $25).

      • I've been using two Bosston boards for about a week and half and have had no problems. I have a lot of devices plugged in, mostly computers, peripherals and consumer electronics. Nothing too power hungry such as a heater has been plugged in. Also used the USB charger last night on the phone. So far so good.

    • +1

I bought one of those boston protectors with master/slave facility. Stopped working after about 6 months. COTD electronics always seem to break after a few months

      • Did you get a replacement or refund as apparently they are lifetime warranty? LOL good luck to the people that said yeah life time warrenty is better than 3 years. Enjoy your 2 annual trips to swap it over for a replacement each year, thats if Dick Smith is even around.

  • A good deal, thanks OP. Bought 2 :)

  • Hmmm I'm getting a "We're really sorry we can't find what you're looking for…" when I add to my cart. Anyone else experiencing this? Deal expired?

EDIT: Now I'm getting a blank screen when adding to cart

  • cool bought 3 - about time I protected all my electronics.

  • There are better boards out there, but for the price it's alright.

  • +4

I have got one of these boards. In the Brisbane storms 3 weeks ago somewhere close to my house got hit by lighting. It managed to get past the House circuit breaker blow a fuse and go through my power board. It killed my PC and managed to zap me through my mouse.

I have a different power board for my TV is also managed to get past that and blow up my TV as well.

Just general information. Im not saying the surge protection is no good but that is my experience.

    • +1

these surge protectors protect against smaller surges. they aren't a magical barrier that will protect you from ANY surge…the lightning was probably close enough that NOTHING would have stopped it, except some sort of industrial strength surge protector (or switching off and disconnecting).

    • have you claimed insurance?

    • +1

And a prime example why i would go Huntkey and am happy with my Huntkey. 2 weeks ago had a lighting strike about 50metres from my house and a week later same thing happened. Both times my Huntkey power board tripped and turned off my PC, Screen etc. Only thing left on where my wireless headphones which i got zapped from and had that metallic taste in my mouth.

If people want to know look in the comments for more info i posted about the Huntkey but in short for $5 it is 72% better that the Dick Smith one and something like 175% better in another area both critical to protecting your equipment. Also has the benefit of 8 spaced out outlets rather than 2.

  • Ordered through iPhone
    Worked fine

  • Question regarding two scenarios:

    1. From my power point, I have the surge protector plugged in, then I have a couple of regular power boards plugged into the surge protector, then my devies plugged into the regular powerboards.

    2. A regular powerboard is connected to the mains. My surge protector is plugged into the regular powerboard, and my devices plugged into the surge protector.

I assume both scenarions will be just as good as plugging devices directly into a surge protector which would be directly into a wall, seeing as how the electricity has to flow passed the surge protector in both scenarios one way or another to get to my devices - right?

    • Depends on the quality of the surge protector & the amount of energy in the surge.
If you do have a spike & enough energy flows into your electronics, it is an issue of whether the insurance will cover multiple failed appliances. Read the protector's T&C carefully.

  • Thanks, got one to replace the two 4 slot power boards I have.

  • +1 another lemming off the cliff. Wheeeee-splat!

  • +2

Offer is for first 400 only
I am sure they have sold 400 by now ?

    • Agree, hope the 400 isn't just to entice/marketing manipulation
      Bought 2.

  • I bought one late last night. It's showing as being on backorder. "Order Status: Your order is on backorder and will be shipped when available."

  • I just brought 2 now. says my order is being processed at this stage

  • I have not got the confirmation email yet. I purchased it yesterday evening.

Also on website it says: Limited to the first 400 customers only

Not sure, why it is still active, as I am sure with 4k clicks, its already reached that limit.

    • same

    • Check your junk mail. I bought one yesterday and was wondering the same as to why I did not receive the email as of today morning, found it in the junk mail.

      • Thanks but nothing in junk mail for me

  • Your order is on backorder and will be shipped when available.

    Oh NOS!!!!!!!

    :(

I think everyone will be in the same boat.

    • Looks like that is the case even with orders from yesterday too.

    • I ordered quite early (was around 25th + vote) and mine says back order.

      • I did when it was 19+.
No confirmation email in spam folder even.
Paypal order confirmation email has cone. but It has happened to me in the past, I hat email from paypal and after waiting for 20-25 days, they said they cancelled the order after not getting the payment.

        Paypal email:
You submitted an order in the amount of $19.99 AUD to Dick Smith Electronics
Thanks for using PayPal. Please note that this is not a charge. Your account will be charged when the merchant processes your payment. You may receive multiple emails as the merchant processes your order

        • Well mine is now "order is being processed".

  • The page just went down!

    • Nope.. still working for me

  • Ordered 2 :)

  • I just hit + (rep now at 250) since the site took my order a few minutes ago.
Surely the 400 limit must be passed, since most people noted that they ordered two.

  • Is this a new Ozbargain record for Likes?

      • Yeah, we've also had a few nudge the 500 mark since then I believe too. This may be in the top 10 or 15 deals though.

        • Dick smith does have the record for the most negs however :) (even though mods removed hundreds of them!

  • Id say it will be months till we see these posted out, I give up!!

  • great deal,got one

  • Thanks, got 2.

I am assuming that there us no issues with using these with those power saving devices?

    • Shouldnt be but those power saving devices are a nightmare (the free ones from the door knockers). I got 3 and havent used them other than for 15 mins (moving soon) so no idea if they are that bad.

My suggestion is if you want a neat all in one solution i would get this for $29 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&p…

I havent used the master/slave edition but from how much i have said about Huntkey in this thread am that happy with them. Im also considering buying a master/slave Huntkey as im in the market for 2 more of their boards just working out my connection set up. Also the Dick Smith board as someone noted out early had only 2 outlets that allow for power bricks due to spacing so you might run into an issue. The Huntkey one had spacing on all 8 outlets.

Huntkey if your listening give me 2 board for free for all the time i have spent telling people how awesome you are LOL :D

  • "Limited to the first 400 customers only."

this deal has had 4800 clicks from ozbargain alone! and the deal is still available?

    • By 400 maybe they meant 10,000

      • By 400 they meant buy like crazy/impulse buy and we will gladly take your money.

        • It worked on me, did it you? :)

  • i bought two last night thinking they'd be ozbargained by morning. looks like DSE ozbargained me this time. well played Dick, well played.

    • Dick's actually a smart arse in disguise.

    • Don't worry I too panicked and bought 2 thinking they must be up to 398 by now. Clever Dick indeed, he sure showed us.

  • i've never bought a surge protector before. can anyone tell me if this one will protect my PC, 2 monitors and external HDDs?

    thanks!

    • +1

      from water damage? no.
      from robbers? no.
      from alien invasion? no.
      from direct lightning strike? unlikely.
      from minor electrical surges? hopefully.

i don't understand what your question is…it's a surge protector: it protects whatever you plug into it from electrical surges (up to a certain level).

      • i just meant protection from a power surge or some other issue from the electricity..

        • well yes, a surge protector will protect whatever you plug into it from minor power surges (as the name suggests). it won't protect against ALL surges - if the surge is too strong, it will still blow through the surge protector.

it will NOT protect from power outages (black/brown outs) or noise/interference on the line. just surges.

        • -2

This is why i think the Huntkey is better as it offers great protection than the Dick Smith one and really thats the main point of buying a surge protector.

          Dick Smith VS Huntkey

          Outlets: 8 vs 8
          Circuit Breaker: 10A vs 10 A
          Surge Protection: 2000J VS 3444J
Max Surge Current Rating: 60,000A vs 144,000A
          Cable Length: 1.8M vs 1.8M
          Insurance Amount: $100,000 vs $1,000,000

        • Wow neg votes for pointing out that for $5 more you get a significantly better product in the areas that matter. Well i hope its doesn't happen to you as the other guy that lost his tv using this board. My Huntkey has already save me twice.

        • +1

@ttwaite, just wanted to say I appreciate your posts. I got 2 Huntkey's the master/slave surge boards off eBay for ~$38 including delivery. http://bit.ly/SOCBxn sale ends tonight.

        • @ttwaite @artick thanks for your posts and the ebay link. Bought a pair just now. Great find. Cheers

    • Huntkey is specifically designed for PC gear. $25 at MSY or PCCG. Im using one and am very happy and will be using 1 for my home theatre and bedroom and probably get another for another PC.

    • …..

Just got an email "Your order has been packed and is awaiting collection. You will receive an email with shipping information this evening which will enable you to track your order."
    Ordered last night.

  • it says it can protect a coaxial cable… does this mean i can plug my cable internet into it?

  • Bought one for my bedroom and the other for the home study which both have PCs connected to them. Cheers!

Use this link now. As part of the 50% off it goes to $19.50 instead. The price only applies once you add it to cart.

  • ordered 2 but .. lets see..

  • I get massive clicks through my speakers when my washing machine cuts in and out of cycle, what do I buy to stop that? These boards won't do that kind of filtering will they?

    • Id assume some sort of line filter, ebay it and see what it comes up with. Audio line filter or something.

    • It says it "Includes coil/capacitor EMI filtering"
Which should help reduce the clicks/pops on the speakers, unlikely to to fix it completely though.
I find that UPSs are often good for this purpose.

  • Bought 3, can't go wrong :D

  • Bleh ~ on backorder….

Might cancel and get the huntkey

    • -4

No rush, im not affiliated with them or anything. You can pick them up for $25 whenever you need one. I just disliked how crazy people got for the sake of a supposed bargain from $40 to $20 and went nuts when in fact they could buy something superior for $5 more and have better protection, that's why we buy these.

And this comment by someone else will see you thanking your lucky stars knowing you have better odds at preventing this with a Huntkey rather than the Dick Smith unit.
