You can't jokes here. This is 2024.

      • +22

10 years ago and this wouldve been high +

        • Yeah we have changed so much

      • +4

You can if it's funny or clever…….

        • +6

Pfft! Stick it in your ear.

Oh wait, then you'd have hearing aids.

    • +1

      VISUAL aids

    • +1

      And all the Bali bogans?

      • +8

This is for HIV, not HPV

        • Correct. Prostitution is pretty rampant around the world and there's an increased risk in a lot of poorer countries too.

    • +9

Most people with hiv in the world are female actually.

      • What makes you say that?

      • -7

I'd question that, because the largest figures come from Africa where as a male it is often taboo to declare you have it, so males will not even test for it let alone get treated.

Australia is something like 4000 women 24000 men.

        • +5

You think the UN isn't capable of making a confident estimate?

        • +4

The figures actually say more women are living with HIV. the number of new cases is higher in men… suggesting more women are adequately treated.

It is important to understand where data can be missing, I don't understand why people are scared of knowledge and downvote your comment

    • +4

What kind of life breeds such hate and repugnance?

      I pity you…

    • The ignorance of this and any sexually transmitted or any other transmitted diseases really does not help people in Australia or when anyone travels.
It is best to keep your mind open so you learn something and understand medical information.
This may involve confronting cultural taboo.
Internalised stigma is hard to face, but medical facts have to be accepted if you want to help yourself and everyone else.

  • deal is at hivtest.au

didn't know there was an .au domain

makes sense, but doesn't give you any clues about what sort of organisation or not they are

    • +5

Actually you're visiting Ozbargain.com.au us which is also an .au domain.
All the domain with .com.au, the ".com" is actually under ".au"

    • Which is why I found this part odd

      via partnership of Australian Government

I don't know who these people are but surely they'd have an ABN to get the .com.au domain. I don't think anything with just .au has caught on yet despite being around for a few years now and personally I still view it with scepticism because anyone can get a .au, the .com.au at least has some kind of verification

      • +3

.com.au at least has some kind of verification

You mean asking for an ABN number that you can get instantly with no verification?

      • You can get most .au domains with little verification, usually just proof of address.

    • .au has been around since the 1980s as second level domains (think .com.au, .org.au, .id.au, .net.au, etcetc). They opened up .au direct in 2022.

  • How much does it cost for the treatment if positive?

      • +48

Yes, famously you can only get infected by the virus if you have gay sex. It seems easier, cheaper and less risky to pay attention in school as well.

        • +2

The best way to stop these diseases spreading throughout our society would be to end the culture of casual sex (fat chance) and to more seriously prosecute people who transmit the disease through gross negligence or intentionally. How can people like Godfrey Zaburoni and Jadd Brooker (incidentally NOT homosexuals) get only 9 and 36 years respectively? Ridiculous.

          • -4

@CommuterPolluter: Limiting sodomy, meth and needle sharing will also help avoid.

            • @Donmega123: The ignorance of this and any sexually transmitted or any other transmitted diseases really does not help people in Australia or when anyone travels.

      • +3

Totally right. You also don't get covid if you don't socialise with gay people.

        • People used to be much gayer back in the day, those were gay ol'times.

          • -5

@freewhere: Maybe, but 'gay' used to mean 'happy', before the social engineers got hold of it.

            • +2

@EightImmortals: And woke was never meant to be used in the context it is today. Nevertheless, words do change their meaning over time or have multiple meanings.
              Gay still also means happy.

              • @SimAus007: Yes language engineering always precedes social engineering, I never meant to imply otherwise. And if you said you were gay in 2024 I'll bet not a single soul would take that as meaning you were happy. :)

                • @EightImmortals: Not used much in casual audible talk but if you read books, it's still used today, quite a lot to mean happy, obviously in the correct context it is clear to mean happy. Anyway, I'm getting way off topic lol

      • It's absolutely wild this hate speech is allowed to remain.
        OzBargain living off the clicks?!

          • @CacheHunter: You're beyond help.

          • @CacheHunter: Wow, before you doubled-down, maybe you should have taken note that your original post is sitting at -54.

            Read the room.

          • @CacheHunter: Ok so now let’s fast forward to the not so distant past 2021 instead of 2015-16.

            https://www.kirby.unsw.edu.au/news/australia-records-lowest-…

Yes, the homosexuals are still transmitting it at 68% of new infections however also take note that this has declined by 52% over the last 10 years.

Now, let’s look at the heterosexuals where the decline is also happening but at a slower rate of only 28%.

By the end of 2021, 98% of people who were being treated had reached a level of viral suppression so strong that even a person having sex with the infected person unprotected could not catch the virus.

Your comments while technically correct in terms of men who have sex with men still predominantly passing it on, are blinded by your want to be funny at the expense of someone else’s sexuality. It’s not funny, it’s rude, it’s unethical, and it’s quite disappointing really. You have no idea who is gay, your best friends might be gay and just not come out yet, or based of these comments may be too scared to. Your relatives could be gay. Quite honestly anyone could be and your comments don’t make it simple for them to feel supported, or comfortable.

Please think about these things before you post them. While it may seem ok from the tiny screen in your hands or the keyboard in your home, they can have wide reaching effects to those you don’t even know. A young boy struggling to come to terms with their sexuality, or a person suffering depression because of their identity not conforming to their families goals and ideals.

If it’s not nice, just don’t bother saying it. Humour worthy or not.

            • @Random206: Thanks for the detailed response. It is with alarm that I learned that my comment was being understood in a way other than intended. It wasn't meant to be offensive, at anyone's expense or as a joke. I have several good friends that are gay.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain how you interpreted it. I accept that while it wasn't intending it as a joke, especially not at anyone's expense or to offend or harm anyone, some readers may have interpreted it as such. For anyone to who this applies, I apologise.

Thanks for taking the time to explain your perspective. It is easier to learn from such feedback and hopefully help me (and others) to avoid similar potential misunderstandings in future.

      https://napwha.org.au/hiv-treatment-for-all/

It's free (except some minor co-payments) and is even free for people w/o access to Medicare

    • The treatment i believe is free and gov based- and nowdays most can live a long life as other people

      • +9

can live a long life as other people

        So like witness protection?

    • +6

      Look into prep my dude.

  • lol @ finger prick tests still being a thing in AUS. In the US you can get oral tests from any pharmacy.

    • +54

some might prefer a prick over oral

      • +2

Most prefers both oral and prick.

    • +7

      Blood tests might be better…

The rapid oral HIV test is quite accurate (similar to the standard blood antibody test) for persons with chronic, or longstanding, HIV infection, but it is not as accurate for people with new or recent HIV infection.

  • +1

Go get em bois and gurls. As a share holder of Atomo we need the gov to use these up so they will buy more!

    • -4

Test kit manufacturer with a share price down 95% over the last 5 years during a global pandemic requiring test kits… Holding their shares is financial AIDS.

      • but when you are in too deep…you don't pull out ;)

        • I sold when i needed some losses. Half way through Covid you could see they were a lost cause.

          • @buffalo bill: Yeah. It's like if you can't capitalise your detection tech for covid when the demand is massive, how can you possibly survive when the demand isn't there during normal times. But like I said…I am in too deep.

  • +11

I never slept with anyone do i still need it 😪

    • +4

      Ohh 😏

    • +15

You can get AIDS from other ways as well

      • +9

Ohh no wonder you are a doctor 😁

        • +1

          IVDU etc

          • @dangerdanger: Is it bad that I immediately thought if you’re an IVDUser you’re very unlikely to have never had sex?

            • +1

@morse: Yes that's bad and probably incorrect. Maybe the opposite even : IVDU = higher rate of risky behaviour, bad characters using other people, sexual behaviours to source $$ for said IVDU, etc etc.

    • +12

But they may have slept with you

      • -1

        Haha that's cool reply 😄

    • -7

Thats the point. Not sleeping. If everyone just sleep nothing will happen no baby no hiv.

      • +16

Having sex is not the only possible way to get HIV

Edit: lol at the neg. As evident in some commentary here, there are a lot of ignorant people.

        • +2

Immature people who think they're being funny - as long as we can educate some people that's all that matters :)

        • +1

I mean Australian blood transfusions are screened, so unless you're shooting up sex is pretty much the only way to aquire it, with gay sex increasing that risk 20x.

          • +2

            @buffalo bill: *anal sex
Same receptive transmission risk whether you're female or male

            • +1

@lachhelix: Incorrect. The cells of the vagina and anus are different, and the anus experiences trauma more often. Male to male is optimal for viral transmission.

              • +4

@buffalo bill: The cells are certainly different and vaginal sex is "safer" but you missed my point haha.

Whether you're having anal sex with a woman or anal sex with a man, the transmission risk is the same.

                • +4

@lachhelix: Disregarding the fact many anal is not 100% of penatrative sex between male and females, and straight people are less likely to be carriers, studies have shown the viral transmission will always be optimal between two males. Google Zambia-Emory HIV Project.

I have nothing against being gay, it's just fact and while it's good to be aware, there is no sense in alarming a whole bunch of straight white people in relationships about HIV and pretending they are the target market for this test kit.

Look at the Grim Reaper campaign of the late 80's and where that got the gay community.

                  • +3

                    @buffalo bill:

there is no sense in alarming a whole bunch of straight white people in relationships

What does white have to do with it?

Anyway obviously unprotected anal sex is the most risky activity to get HIV and yes gay men are probably doing more of that than anyone else. However the kit is for anyone who thinks they need it. There’s a lot of people who have sex outside of their relationship, including ‘straight’ men who have sex with men, very often unbeknownst to their partner.

                    • @morse: "White" is a generisation but people from western countries are not significantly represented in global statistics, and research suggests HIV is more prevalent amonst some non anglo races.

the kit is for anyone who thinks they need it

Correct. The key is being aware of the facts which there sadly seems to be a lot of questions in here.

                    • +3

@morse: Gay men are also far more likely to be using HIV transmission prevention medicine, PrEP or PEP, which is free and readily available to everyone living in Australia, and is 99% effective at stopping HIV transmission.
Very few gay men are contracting HIV in Australia now thanks to this medicine, some states such as WA, are aiming for zero new cases of HIV transmission due to this medicine.
                      https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/Pre-exposure-prophylaxis-PrE…

                      • +3

@SimAus007: Very true. I’d say there would be far greater sexual health literacy amongst gay men than the general population. That’s why I think the test is for anyone and everyone who thinks they need it.

        • Does circumcision effect transmissibility?

    • Apparently it originated in primates, so proceed accordingly.

      • +3

        We're primates.

    • You do share needles though?

    • Not all disease is spread sexually.
See this as an opportunity to learn about medical issues?
I will never get certain kinds of cancer, but awareness costs nothing and learning some things about medical science is good.
      https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=transmitt…

  • I haven't touched any ladies or dudes in the past two years, do I need this test?

    • +2

      Have you touched yourself?

    • Do you inject drugs?

    • +6

      Ew you use public toilets

    • +17

That is complete and utter garbage

HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is spread primarily through some bodily fluids. The virus must directly enter your bloodstream for infection to occur. Though transmission can occur in several ways, a toilet seat is not one of them.

      Source: Healthline.com

    • +1

Keep your penis off public toilets.

      • and vag. The number of ladies suction cupping public toilet seats on Tictock is out of control. They won't get AIDS, but it's still not safe.

    • Thank you for demonstrating your level of education if you believe you can contract it from a toilet seat. Studying wasn't your strong suit.
