Firstly i came across the Big W AWA 42" (106cm) Plasma with built in HD tuner for $998.

But now i found an even better deal at JBHIFI. However the JBHIFI stock is limited, so you better be quick!

For those still interested in the Big W Plasma here are some details on it

Big W started selling these last year, now they come with a full 3 year warranty. Sure they arent a top brand of TV. But if you want to save some money, why not spend it on this TV. And then in 2 years time (when its likely to break down) the prices of LCD and Plasmas will likely to have continued to go down. Then you can get a top brand for a similar price?

I've seen feedback from people in forums saying AWA has lasted them for a while. So this maybe a good bargain for some people?

Plus its christmas time, so you can always try and talk them into reducing the price even further.

You can get 42" Panasonic Plasma TV around 1000 to 1100 mark. why waste time with non-brand for $100 less.

hmm… i think the panasonic one is Standard Definition NOT HD

      • same to the one posted here

      • All Panasonic these days are either HD or Full HD.

      • -1

True about the Panasonic, this TV is 1024x768 resolution, not really full HD.

  • Personally I wouldn't buy an AWA or a Panasonic but this is an OK deal

  • +1

wE DONT REALLY HAVE TO BE QUICK, THEY ALWAYS HAVE THIS DEAL.

  • Its absolutely up to the person really.

Soniq use LG panels and are rebranded LG tv's.
The older Soniq models use Samsung panels.

When buying TV's, you should walk around the store and physically look at them.

Often the big brands look no different and sometimes worse than cheaper brands.
When the specs are the same. And you can save a few hundred dollars for something that you cant tell any difference between.

Then why spend the extra $100-400?

Personally i like the Panasonic picture quality, warmness and colour the best out of the LCD 32-42" category.

But hey, to some people saving a few hundred dollars, they may like to know about this Soniq brand?

    • You cannot say that 'SONIQ' are rebranded LGs. They use cheap LG panels that often LG don't even use in their own sets. Many other factors go into determining the quality of the picture, and SONIQ sets do not use the same image processing chips like the LGs do.

I am not rubbishing cheaper Chinese OEM brands but they are not the same quality as 'brand' names. However, many people cannot tell the difference, and the difference may also be $400 or more as you have mentioned.

I would definitely choose a Panasonic or LG over the Soniq, but it's not a bad deal either. If you've just moved out of home and want to grab a big TV set with a HD box, then this TV would definitely suit you.

  • I would have to disagree with agentsmithy, when buying big toys, you'd opt to spend a little extra on quality stuff, if all the panels made by a brand is the same, then why would there be $2000 bravia and a $4000 bravia?

I have a friend who bought a less famous brands plasma, the backlight blew up twice in one short year and demaged the IC board, "even if" they give you free repair, just imagine the days you cannot watch TV. "if" some parts are not covered, then the extra few hundreds are there already, why not buy a brand name ones then?

    • It's just a TV. Why spend $4000 if you can spend $896… Spend $896 now, and if you like it as a hobby and want to upgrade, the said $4000 TV might be cheaper in 2-3 years time.

If you just use it as a TV, $4000 is way too much IMO. But times are different, the more you spend, the better it is for the country. If you rather spend $4000 instead of $896, go for it! The country needs you to spend right now.

      • The country doesn't need you to spend money on Big Screen telly's that send the cash overseas..
The country needs you to spend cash on Australian products that generate income for other Australians, who can subsequently spend that income on other Australian products to generate income for other Australians, etc, etc, etc.
Spending money on TV's might help keep the guy at JBHiFi in a job and the importer of the telly, but 80% of that money will probably head straight to Japan..
Please spend my money (yeah, I paid taxes for it and becasue I don't have kids I'm not seeing a cent directly) on something beneficial to Australia, not just to yourselves.

        • Or China.. Hi-five.. I'm also one of the few who pays taxes but get no free money from the government to spend this Christmas. Any more here? We should start a movement and get more political!

What you say is true in general. But 20% (might be more than that) still counts for something. JB sales gets to keep his employment and so he has more spending power. Government earns taxes (that's why Swan didn't force the banks to reduce mortgage rates as it will hit bank profits and in turn budget surplus. Expect massive profits from banks next year!).

The power you use to power that plamsa TV also keep the techies and companies that juiced up the grid. You might also buy more DVDs or rent which keeps retailers or rental shops in business.

It's a trickle down effect. The money you spend will generate more, and greases the wheels.

If you spend $4000 on a TV, and stop at that, it's a waste! You need to spend thousands more on a home sound system. $200-$400 for a BD player (or more for PS3). And BD costs more than DVD to own or rent.

Personally I don't agree spending more (even $100 or $50) just for the "brand". Guess I am the only guy in Australia who thinks this way.

Like treblid said, this is still a TV for $896.

It would be hard to find a 42" Plasma with built in HD tuner from a reputable company with warranty for a listed price of $896. I mean you could probably even bargain this down?

Thats why i posted this, because i think its a bargain.

Often when you get a bargain product, it may not be the highest or top quality product you can buy.
But the point is you are saving money.

I bought an 80cm DSE brand CRT TV 3 years ago for $90. This meant i could spend hardly anything, get what i wanted (a new tv) and then save up to buy a top quality one when i need it.
Sure it wasnt an LCD, sure it was a Dick Smith brand product. But its lasted me 3 good years and served its purpose.
You dont always need to pay the extra $$ to get the big brand. If you watch TV every day and can tell the difference between the picture quality of the Soniq and Panasonic for example, then by all means spend the extra $$.

Im just simply posting a bargain price for a 42" plasma TV with built in HD tuner. Im not saying - this is the best TV in the world and look at the price - go get it.
Im pointing out that your getting a good product for a good price. So why not consider it, if it suits your needs?

Personally, I dont think theres a need to neg vote bargains because they dont suit your needs and you would rather spend the extra money to get a better brand.
I think it would be fair to neg vote it if it was a fake or came from an unreputable company or was priced higher than its competitors.

    Anyway thats my 5c :)

    • I voted to counteract the negative..
I agree it's not something I'd want and therefore didn't vote until now. But $900 for a 42" HDTV is a cheap price.

    • oh well, dunno how hard to find for a generic plasma at this price http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/8036, ok, no negative vote by rule since it is $4 cheaper.

      • thanks Noslee :)

Wow - this page got quite a lot of views and comments now lol!

  • thanks dude, appreciate it :)

  • Low resolution for such a big TV, only 1024 x 768, worst than my 17" LCD

just my opinion, dont buy big tv with such a low resolution

  • I have a projector which does 1024 x 768 and displays on a 120" screen, it looks awesome even at DVD resolution which is only 720×576

  • Normally TVs like this for so cheap have 800 x 600 resolution. I remember the older Soniq TVs going for $1000 in 800 x 600.

Picture still looks ok as long as it's live TV in HD or a DVD otherwise DivX etc looks dirty because of pixelation.
