Do You Guys Also Watch YouTube at 1.5x Speed?

that’s what I do. watch more content while you are alive.

if 1.5x seems to fast try 1.5x for 10-15 seconds then switch to 1.25x and 1.25x will seem normal.

after a few times of doing that you will be fine with 1.5x.

but a lot of people I suggest this to don’t know it’s possible or never heard of this before. so just a life hack.

Depends on the content at the end of the day.

Youtube incentivizes creators to turn 2-5 minute video concepts to 10-20 minutes videos so they can put more ads in em (whole another fish 30 minute + super cuts etc).

Established channels I will happily 1.5x / 1.75x / 2.00x it depending on the actual pace of the video and if im familiar with their format; their points can made quicker. They even admit on their secondary channels that they talking slower / putting emphasis on things / repeating things to hit that 10 minute mark so monetization kicks in.

Channels who put time and effort into the story, visual and audio (usually newer ones) I watch in normal speed because the quality is there, footage is new and its pretty to look at which I find worth consuming VS recycled b-roll / content they have in their asset libraries.

    Quality over Quantity
    < Quality = Fast forward

If the English is good/clear, I sometimes hit 2x too…

  • If only OzB had such a feature.

a lot of video i watch on anywhere from 1.5x-2x depending on how fast the presenter speaks. i also used to use an extension that takes it up to 3x speed (but usually 2.5x is fastest i could handle). i don't use it anymore as it is fatiguing, and im already consuming content like its a job.
i watch videogames in 1x only tho, coz otherwise the tempo of the game is messed with and i can't understand context of players actions anymore (FPS games)

Your brain needs to slow down

Entertainment is supposed to be about the journey, not the destination. No time to actually absorb and properly enjoy things, if your brain is just speeding off to the next thing

    • Some people enjoy the speed of things.

      (Not me)

I wish people walking in the city would walk at 1.5x speed

You guys watch Youtube? Got rid of that crap as soon as it became nothing but an advertising platform.

    • Heaps. It’s not that difficult to avoid ads either, you can get browser extensions to skip ads (even baked in) or just download the video for offline viewing

    • I don't remember the last time I saw an add. It was more than then years ago.

I guess a lot of what i watch involve commentary by a specific person who i enjoy the commentary from as i cant imagine doing it in a way where the voice and inflections etc change. It would lose some of its oomph wouldnt it?

  • I do quite often. Just be careful though, watching people at 1.5 x speed can make them seem more authoritative so just keep that in mind if you are watching because it makes people seem like experts when they are not which can lead you into believing a lot of false information.

  • SunnyV2 is so dam slow I can watch him at 3x.

  • Where's the poll?

  • Use this extension, you an fine adjust it to any speed and is a small, inoffensive addition. I generally watch things around 2.2x speed…. find some videos are fine on 3x+ speed (work your way up to it) depending on the video… and others I'll need to slow down to 1.5

I think we all have different abilities to process auditory information though.

I don’t need an extension but what I do need is some kind of AI tool that calculates the speed at which people’s are talking and then auto adjusts the x speed so that it’s always constant.

I do sometimes notice some videos are still too slow, or some are slightly faster than I want. but if I adjust the speed up or down my attention span.. no my attention capacity? is limited so I will tap the next video and forget to put it back to 1.5x and only notice like 4 videos later. so that’s why I just always leave it on 1.5x which seems to be the best option for me.

      • I wonder if this is a tool YouTube have or expose to creators, words spoken per minute. I gather a lot of teleprompters have a similar feature.

  • Do You Guys Also Watch YouTube at 1.5x Speed?

Youtube shorts or TikTok should be better option in that case?

watch more content while you are alive

Agreed but you never watch enough even if you spend the whole day every day from my calculation of 8 hours per day just like the books in the library.

  • You're already half way there, not stretching for the shift key.

  • Some channels at 2x - 3x

    Others at 1x

Lectures or similar content can easily be done at 2x

    Great for audiobooks, podcasts etc.

  • I also watch youtube videos sped up, usually at 2x speed if i'm watching product and tech reviews, cinematic stuff i watch at normal 1x speed.

For ads i watch them at max 16x using a plugin called "enhancer for youtube", it's not an adblocker so the creators are still getting paid.

  • Yeah. I watch a lot of stuff sped up. I'm so far behind on TV shows and stuff I often watch that stuff sped up as well. It does depend on what type of show or how much I really want to watch it. Having subtitles can help to understand some of what they are saying if I have sped it up a lot.

  • Never bothered since I run sponsorskip which also skips repetitive and unnecessary parts of the video.

  • I was doing 2.0x on the Uni videos on this deal. They talk soooooooo slow!

  • Depends on whether or not pacing and delivery really matter. I wouldn't speed it up for music or film where the speed and pacing are very intentional. I also wouldn't speed it up for something where regular speed is already occasionally challenging (listening to something in a language I'm learning but not yet proficient in).

    • had no problem with directors cut of Napoleon last night. the trick for me is to not give up too quickly and in a few mins you are watching it without even thinking of speed (you take it in as normal speed).

btw thought it was better than the original 2 hour 48 min version. it was more complete.

anyway 3.5 hour directors cut ended up being 2.5 hours at 1.25x so had an hour to squeeze in and watch YouTube before bed.

one weird thing I notice though is with music especially on YouTube. sometimes it sounds fine sped up but sometimes you get this weird distortion type sound, like the instruments sound a bit electronic or something. not bad enough to make me want to adjust speed because it’s only on some videos.

It's not that I can't "handle" film/music at that speed or anything, but pacing can be key to establishing things like tension. Not to say that things become unwatchable, but the experience itself can be diminished. Music is the same. Maybe you can still process everything, but alteration of pace also alters the mood and feel of the song. Sometimes enjoying something more is counter to enjoying as much of it as fast as possible.

        • yeah I mean not something I want to brag about it's just how I watch videos.
doing it could actually be giving me brainrot as some comments suggested.

  • this one is actually better at 0.5x. 😂
