Proactive Action - Xiaomi (& Other Chinese Brands / Import) Phone Owners Affected by 3G Shutdown (Now Due to Be Network Blocked)

UPDATE 1/11/24 - Response from grey import seller after I contacted them regarding a Redmi Note 12 that is no longer working. (Of course I know it is not their fault, but this is a good way to get more pressure on Xiaomi to do an update, and to put pressure on the government to whitelist"
"We have investigate the issue comprehensively and follow up instantly with distributor and ask them to push Xiaomi to resolve the issue. After our best endeavor, as of 31 OCT, Xiaomi confirm that their device is actually capable of emergency calls over 4G or 5G. This is an compatible device. However, the disconnection results from new ACMA regulations effective October 28, 2024, requiring carriers to restrict devices that can’t support 000 emergency calls over 4G or 5G from accessing their networks. It is out of our control. It is a government, manufacturer and network provider level. They recklessly blocking usable phone regardless of compatibility. They block for most phones that not purchase from them or from their partners and force you to buy a new one from them.
Meanwhile, we are pushing our distributor to communicate with manufacturer for updating the list and there are news that a firmware update will soon launch from Xiaomi."

UPDATE 30/10/24 - Please also email
support.global@support.mi.com as we now have some traction

  • After multiple emails I finally got a NON-standard response! Hope is on the horizon! If this ends up working, you all can shout me a beer (or preferably a non-alcoholic and refreshing beverage)!

"Hello, Greetings from Xiaomi Customer Support! This is Eric.
Thank you for your feedback. We have noticed this situation, and concerned team are working on it. Please wait for the system update.
We would like to know if your device is only unable to use the emergency call function normally, but is able to use other functions normally, or if it has no signal/service at all. Once we have your feedback, we will get back to you with proper handling.
Best Regards
Xiaomi Global Email Service"

SUMMARY

  • Certain 4G and 5G phones currently working on VoLTE may be actively blocked through a government directive after 28th October
  • These are usually grey import phones that revert to 3G for 000 emergency calls
  • There are a lot of people ignoring the annoying text and voice messages on their phones, thinking "My phone IS 4G/5G, I am not affected"
  • Come October 28, there is going to be a tsunami of shock and anger

Oct 24 last minute legislation to block 4G and 5G phones that revert to 3G for 000 calls

Banana3's Summary (READ THIS FIRST to understand what the issue actually IS, instead of spouting "3G shutdown has been announced for years…")
"Again, the issue is not whether 3G should be shut down or not. I think most people in this discussion agree that it needs to be shut down. The issue is that a few years ago the communication was: as long as your phone supports 4g, then you should be fine. Then earlier this year: No, 4g alone is not going to cut it, you need to have a phone that supports VoLTE. Then: Wait, actually, not just any VoLTE, only those that the network allows your phone to use (yes, Vodafone told me that when my perfectly working VoLTE phone stopped working after they shut down 3g). Then on the last minute: Oh wait, actually, not just that, your phone also needs to be able to call 000 on 4g by default. None of these have been properly planned, or thought of, or mitigated. It's all just a big mess. If anyone is confused, it's not their fault."

  • Some of my Xiaomi phone worked with Vodafone after the 3G shutdown has now been blocked by Vodafone. For educational purposes with QPST I have tested with "IMEI repair" on 1 of the SIM slot and it is back online but this is not an easy process and it requires bootloader to be unlocked.

With Xiaomi planning to stop bootloader unlocking and rumour is that they will also block bootloader unlocking on global model in 2025, you'd better have your bootloader unlock when you still can. You will need to have Magisk with Play Integrity Fix module install to get banking app and Google Wallet working if you unlock bootloader.

I own a Redmi 13 from Harvey Norman and right now can only make calls on WIFI calling for now with my Vodafone SIM-Voda is aware of this and still sorting the probs with Xiaomi, so swapped that out for my Boost and amaysim SIM which makes calls normally and on WIFI calling flawlessly on the Redmi 13-same with my Redmi 12 from JB Hi-Fi and Redmi 13C also from Harvey Norman , which makes calls on Vodafone absolutely fine.
    ..
My Redmi 13 IMEI/TAC checked out all A-OK as did my Redmi 13C and 12.

Emailed Xiaomi global, got the usual response of waiting for a software update-Vodafone is aware of all of this.

  • So is the drama all over now folks? Anybody still having trouble with their xiaomi phones being disconnected?

I have three family phones here all on monthly plans waiting to convert to yearly prepaid plans when the coast is clear.

  • Has anyone been through an mnvo shutdown? My phone works on circles.life but they are shutting and moving to amaysim who optus recently purchased.

    Poco X5 5g

  • I went to Hong Kong after the 3g shutdown and only tried to get my phone unblocked this month. Have emailed Aldimobile and TIO but Aldi came back and said they can't unblock, I need to buy a new phone. Don't know what to do, any cheap phone recommendation? I only need it to do the most basic stuff like sms and voice call.

A bit late now but Optus released this recently for those wanting to check device compatibility post 3G shutdown: https://www.optus.com.au/support/checkdevice

    • Thank you so much.

I have been stuck with Vodafone network ever since.
This is the first time I see my Redmi note 12 not blocked. So happy. Will try it next time.

    • So I used this to check a Xiaomi 13 IMEI I found online (first 8 digits only), and it said not blocked… Anyone actually tried recent models like Xiaomi 13 and 14 here since November?

  • My Xiaomi Mi9T was working fine on Vodafone. Then my plan ran out yesterday, so I changed to Catch Connect (Optus). Now blocked 😞😭

      Tried the other SIM slot?

    • Did you check if it was blocked on Optus website before you switched ?

I just checked it by using "86277004" (Not mine. Found it online) and it said
"Unfortunately, based on the number your entered, the XIAOMI MI 9T device is blocked from accessing the Optus mobile network……"

      • No, I didn't check with Optus before changing. I just assumed that since it worked with Vodafone, it would work with other carriers. Obviously I was wrong.
I guess my choices now are either new phone (I've had it for 4+ years so has served me well) or go back to Vodafone

        • Hope you didn't sign up to a 365 day plan, otherwise just go back to a Vodafone/Telstra one and it should be fine. I went the opposite way cos Optus seemed to have been the most block-happy one with their supposed whitelist that only allows a narrow list of specifically approved XIAOMI/POCO phones.

          • @vawiyoci: Is Telstra now unblocking devices?

            • @chriaj2689: Which phone model? Have no experience personally but shane2770 down the bottom mentioned their poco no longer working on Belong so maybe?

    • Yes my Mi9T has been blocked on Optus since Oct/Nov last year. It's now a brick kept in the drawer. See the link I posted on the previous page allowing you to check Optus device compatibility

      • It's now a brick kept in the drawer.

These phones are only blocked in AU.
You can still use them in many overseas countries, and/or sell the phone in an overseas market
(eg. eBay.AU with international shipping, or take it to a shop in India or wherever and sell over the counter).

Alternatively, you can use the phone like a computer and/or without a SIM card.

      • Is it also blocked on Vodafone and Telstra?

    • My Redmi K20 pro (original version of Mi 9T) using Vodafone is always blocked :(

I've got a perfectly working Poco f2 pro I just want to use for 5g data hotspot but bloody Belong blocked it what a waste of a phone

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05-27/telstra-optus-inconsi…

The ABC went and scraped the entire valid space from the Telstra site, pulled the lookup files from the Optus one and made a visualisation…

I was pretty reluctant to hammer their site that much, so I only hit them up for TAC numbers I could find online…

  • They finally got me. Hopped from different resellers and it's finally happened. Poco 5g

    • wow over 6 months later they're still blocking phones!!

      which model poco?

      • POCO X5 5g non pro version. Telstra blocked it in the beginning, the optus site is still showing it as fine but its not working. We're with Amaysim. Circles.life closed and migrated us over to amaysim and 3 weeks later. Blocked

        • have you tried vodaphone network - we have a few redmis working there ok

          • @avtek: No but I'm not hopeful due to the vodafone/optus tower sharing deal. Will it fail when the vodafone phone swaps to an optus tower?

          • @avtek: Old Poco Fs are also still OK atm on Voda. Not sure why the tower sharing deal would affect IMEI bans?

  • Just got me too, was overseas it worked fine as soon as I came back - no service - Amaysim confirmed it's a imei block - told them to tell Optus to whitelist it. Xiaomi Mi 10T PRO 5G - Lebara/Vodafone does allow me to use data only? any advice welcome as I don't want to buy a phone for a couple of weeks that I'm here lol cheers

  • My mum came back from overseas on Monday, and her Poco F3 can no longer connect to the Telstra network.

    • That's weird then cos their own online IMEI checker still shows the model as OK.

    • It is very strange that Telstra and Optus have blocked such phones (and thus includes respective MVNOs).

However, Vodafone and its MVNOs (like Lebara, Felix, Kogan, Lyca) continue to work on all phones.

Can anyone confirm if Vodafone network still works on a poco f2 pro please
