MG4 Excite 51 - I'm Calling This EV an OzBargain Win

This is a brag, because I am very happy with my new car so far.

The task was to comfortably do a 200km return commute, mostly on a rural national highway at a top speed of 110ish.

My car needed replacing and the MG’s $31k price was right, but I was still concerned about range and it being an MG.

I’m getting home with 30% battery and 75km range left. I’m good with that. Full battery shows 284km range.

The car is a thrill to drive, comfortable for 75 minutes at a stretch, and fast - from the get go and when overtaking. I could be in danger of becoming an @rsehole on the road.

It feels nicely made where it matters. There’s a peek of white stuffing in the foot well, the panel between back seat and floor is plastic. But I’m impressed for the price. I've always bought base models.

I collected it on October 22 and have done 2038km in 12 days at 17.5kWh/100km. Average speed is 59kph. We do a mix of 200km and 75km return commutes.

On collection, it had underbody sag (being fixed tomorrow) and vinyl crinkle on door pillar (pointed out by dealer and to be replaced).

I’m still getting used to some quirks with charging and settings - the best order to do things; when selections are retained - but none are deal breakers.

I have the Caro Series Wallbox from this deal. I paid $7 for ChargeHQ this month, but I’m about to learn Home Assistant :)

The app shows I used 405kWh (40 from solar, but I’m ignoring that). I pay 34.0692c/kWh, so it’s cost me $140. My Mitsubishi 380 used 200L for 2000km. At $1.50 a litre that would be $300.

I needed to replace my car. An EV is working well for a rural commute. Worries about range and MG are rapidly dissipating.

    • I got an MG4 instead of a corolla hybrid and regretted it as the corolla is likely to retain better resale value then an MG4. MG doesnt care about the brand or customer retention and will keep slashing prices thereby driving the prices down further. Even BYD is a better buy than MG as they care about their brand value.

  • Thanks so much for this - your use case matches our own almost exactly. We have a honda Jazz, so I can see with solar and less frequent trips (but of the same distance) we’d save a lot of money.

    • Our distance is a bit of a sweet spot. I think at 150km each way it would be doable, but needing careful driving and associated stress

  • What about using Tariff 33 for charging? It's 21c/kWh and available for a min of 18 hours per day.

I need to look into that. Thanks

Only ICE owners think a Hydrogen vehicle can work.

Once you know about EV's you know its the only way of the future.

    • +2

That Renault thing is an absolute joke.

Firstly, all the typical problems associated with hydrogen remain un-addressed:
      1. The need for incredible amounts of new infrastructure to refuel hydrogen vehicles, which is an order of magnitude harder and more expensive than rolling out EV chargers; and
      2. The vast inefficiencies of creating hydrogen in a sustainable way, compared to simply using that same energy to power an EV.

And then it has a 40kWh NMC battery….that's 80% of the base model MG4's battery, with all the weight and packaging complications it brings. In effect, Renault have created a PHEV but with less convenience and lower efficiency. This is an EV killer in the same way that a few snowflakes will solve desertification.

    • It's not coming…

      I quote
"Like most concept cars, the Renault Embleme is not slated for production."

  • Agree it was a bargain - perhaps the best car deal in Australian history, only reason I didn't buy one is the parts in my 2006 Mitsubishi 380 on LPG have two more years in them, then I will retire it.

Glad you are happy with it, I've seen a bunch on the road recently and they look good.

    • I have a car full of 380 parts, delivered and going cheap. 😃 let me know if you want it

      • Appreciate the offer but for various reasons (including upgrading safety, while acknowledging the 380 was notably safe for its time and got a 4 star ANCAP rating) I'm planning to retire it in 2 years.

  • I bought my Rav 4 Hybrid for $55k 3 years ago and after doing 44,000km, sold it for $52k this month. Pretty much zero depreciation. Also average fuel use was only 5.5L/100km over that 44,000km. I have seen MG4 values drop $10k in 12 months with only 3000km lol, imagine what it will be worth with 45,000km and 3 years. No amount of fuel savings will compensate for that depreciation loss.

    • Rav4 is an outlier for car depreciation, not sure why you're flexing as if it's some secret.
Also there were no $55k Rav4s in 2021.. lmao

      • Plus the depreciation is going to change now supply is back to more normal levels and there is a lot more hybrid suv competition.

        • Exactly. The RAV4 had massive supply constraints that held resale at unusually high levels for a while. But normal supply has been resumed, all the back-orders have been filled, and there are decent alternatives.

During the same time, there was massive competition among EVs, especially in the smaller car segments which were previously almost vacant except for legacy models like the Leaf. The influx of new Chinese imports drove prices down heavily. They now seem to have stabilized again at this lower level.

TL;DR: opposite market forces caused high resale in one market and low prices in another. Both were aberrations and are unlikely to re-occur.

    • RAV4 during COVID times was a black swan, once in a lifetime (hopefully) event, difficult to replicate that.
not exclusive to RAV4 either. my wife sold a 5yr VW polo for the same price as what she bought it for new

  • Nice. I'm glad you are enjoying it.

TL;DR before the last sentence please, for the doom scroll generation.

    • Couldn't remember the acronym, but got the content right

I don't write like a kid but they can understand me 😃

  • How much do you pay for insurance if you have any?

    • Just under$1000 with racq, but will probably change to Woolies @ $1300 to include animal/pest damage

  • MG has consistently surpassed Tesla in terms of value and quality.

Battery is apparently better as well

Not sure why people just have to pay extra to own a Tesla?

Elon Musk campaigned for Trump so maybe that is why people buy Tesla?

Kind of like supporting MAGA and the POTUS

    • MG has consistently surpassed Tesla in terms of value and quality.

Not sure that's verifiable, although value is somewhat subjective.

They don't really have competing products, and some of MG's vehicles are deeply unremarkable.

Battery is apparently better as well

      In what way?

Not sure why people just have to pay extra to own a Tesla?

Both Tesla's models are considerably bigger vehicles with larger batteries, plus higher equipment levels so it's not surprising that they cost more.

There's no doubting that the MG4 represents excellent value though, and cheaper EVs is good for the market in general

wait till honeymoon phase is over.

    • Dumb arse comment. The honey moon is forever. Heard the v2g news from Chris Bowen? No electricity bills for every ev owners. You petrol sniffer are serious laggard.

The ice head spotted. Anciently sniffing that petrol too much.
