8" Dobsonian Telescope $399.95 Including Accessories (50% off)

100

This is a great starter gift for people who have always wanted to be an amateur astronomer.

This telescope is many orders of magnitudes better than "department store telescopes" which are overpriced and have shocking quality.

I have had a similar telescope for 7 years and highly recommend it for anyone aged 12+ who wants to see first hand the wonders of the universe. This scope will be able to see galaxies, nebula, polar ice caps on Mars, the moons and eclipses on Saturn and Jupiter, all 8 of the planets in the solar system, comets and asteroids, the phases on Venus and probably lots more objects both inside our galaxy and outside it.

The price includes free shipping. Expires midnight tonight.

  • Free Shipping makes this a steal !

  • The retail price is listed as $699.95.

    Is $399.95 50% off $699.95?

    • with accessories

Please read what the OP said before posting. It's also clearly stated on the website.

      • To be fair, the accessories are worth $77.90 so it's still not quite 50% off. Good price though.

        • The OP said 50% off, its not advertised as 50% off, so its a simple mistake by the OP, finito !

      • On the website it states…

OZScopes 8" Dobsonian Telescope + FREE Essential Dobsonian Accessories

        Our Price: $399.95

        Retail Price: $699.95

There isn't any separate pricing on the accessories so I am left to think it is as a set (retailing $699.95).

This deal is ok. Andrews are the best place in AU to buy scopes. They have a GS-680 8" with a better accessory kit, IMHO, for the same price but no free shipping. Good if you are in Sydney.

that Andrews link seems to say "FREE FREIGHT AUSTRALIA-WIDE FOR ALL NEW OPTICAL ORDERS OVER A$100" . would that sweeten the deal?

      • -1

        really?
        they charge:
        Nexstar MAK90 SLT
        90mm x 1,250mm with "Go-To"!

        $699 AUD

        from amazon:
        Price: $306.50

you dont need to pay $300 for shipping.

          from amazon:
          Price: $306.50

yeah, but that's a US telescope. You have to use your right eye, not your left eye like the ones they sell here…

        • Meade and Celestron are overpriced for what they deliver, in my opinion. They also haven't updated their pricing in AU to account for the Chinese competition, so I don't expect they are selling many. And Amazon won't ship to AU. A forwarder will charge something like $200, but I would love you to show me different!
My first scope was a 6in 20 years ago that cost $1000!

what type of images would I be able to see one of these? Anyone got a sample?

    Jupiter? :P

You will be able to see clear views of Saturn in black and white about the size of your little finger held at arms length. You will be able to see bands on Jupiter and at least 4 moons around it. The moon will completely fill the view and you will be able to see very very good detail.
Orion and other deep sky stuff will generally look like grey smudges/clouds.
As a general comment, you can't see the bright colours you get in photos with a real telescope, as your eye doesn't have enough colour receptors to gather coloured light (well, you will see hints of colour).

      • With an 8" aperture you should be able to see some colour in planets as far out as Jupiter.

        • I've found dobsonian telescopes to be a bit tricky to really observe planets since they move a little too quickly and they are not as easy to track as a newtonian one.

        • and they are not as easy to track as a newtonian one.

can you get a decent newtonian at this price though ?

      • I have spent the last probably three to four hours researching telescopes and what-not and have all but decided I'm going to pick myself up the Guan Sheng GS-880 10" from Andrews for $599 (unless anyone else can inform me of a better 10" scope at this price). I'm happy with the included eyepieces for a start and might look to expand later once I better know what I want/need.

I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on a collimator? I can't find any on the Andrews site (which is running a close second to MSY in terms of shocking website design) but I imagine they must sell them and I'd like to get one at the same time as I order the scope. I don't think I need a laser one.

        Thanks!

    aldi has got something http://aldi.com.au/au/html/offers/2827_24667.htm
i'm not sure how it compares

    • +1

3" vs 8", so no, it doesn't compare. Possibly good for kids to look at the moon and nearer planets, but for a beginner stargazer, the 8" seems to be the way to go.

  • Cool do you guys recommend this or the gs680 from Andrews? Im in sydney. Beginner

  • On the larger scopes amazon won't ship them here, plus you'll have to pay gst, minimum.

So I looked up a $3299 scope on Andrews and its $2182 on amazon. Still alot of difference I suppose,

  • "Expires midnight tonight." meh - not enough time to make a decision like this. I'll go with Andrews which is a stable price and comes with free deliv.

    • My thoughts exactly. Shame that Andrews has such a horrendous website!
