Hmmm how is this a deal? Is it $599 after the preorder ends?

    • +1

please tell that to the people who bought New Google's Nexus 7 Wi-Fi 16GB for $249 (rrp), 32GB for $299(rrp)and they thought that was a bargain

At least with this pre-order offer, you don't have to put the money down now and can hold a brand new tab on the Friday morning.

Firstly, the nexus hardware for it's price is a bargain.

Secondly, history and current reviews suggest that Surface is unlikely to sell well and considerable discounts on the price are to be expected in the new year.

  • +2

Standard price only difference is you can buy in store.

  • +1

    not a deal regular price

  • +7

Hrm, Windows RT operating system. Make sure you know what your getting.

    • +1

An awesome device that can be used for content creation as well as consumption.

Note this is not windows 8 much like osx is not iOS

It does allow home group sharing
      Remote Desktop
      Printers
      Connecting to work groups

Not sure how something can be "awesome" before anyone has used it. Seems like just another tablet to me. Also not a deal, it's RRP.

        • the OS has been out for a while… and MS has used kiosks to show off these tablets since the release of windows 8.

        • You don't know they are available direct from MS for sometime already?

        • Been out for 1 1/2 months

      • +2

"Note this is not windows 8 much like osx is not iOS"

That is exactly what I was referring to. I think that this might not be clear to the vast majority of people and those who might be tempted to preorder before using one or reading reviews about the available software should be advised to do so. I actually think it is bad form on Microsofts part to use the naming convection like they did I'm sure my parents wouldn't see or suspect anything different they would say "Windows RT .. So basically a new version of Windows XP or something right?". Windows software will need to be specifically made/ recompiled / rewritten / redistibuted for this platform - you won't just be able to run your existing application / software in the desktop mode - this information shouldn't be a foot note on the product.

I don't hate the idea, I'm keen to have a look and try it out - but I'm certainly not going to pre-order.

I thought the RT stood for Rotten Tomatoes! No wonder the movie review isn't up yet… ;)

  • +2

    Not a deal this rrp

    The tablet is awesome though!!

Would be good if they had the 64gb not in a bundle as I want the type cover and not the touch cover and don't want to pay for both

  • +2

Jb is also getting these so you should be able to negotiate a better price

  • +3

This does not seem to be a bargain

  • +1

Can you imagine the shitstorm if someone posted iPads at full retail as a bargain? no deal

  • "Made from thoughtful and precise design"…

    What?

  • +1

wait for the pro until the price down

  • +1

this is kind of a deal as it is alerting us that the Surface is now available in big name stores - up till now online only - you will never be able to get a cheaper price as I would say it is locked in with Microsoft - this tab good for lots of reasons but apparently sluggish - i would love to have one though as it would integrate with my Microsoft world - thanks OP.

    • The prerelease software was a little sluggish. Once you update to final build it is smooth as butter

      • thanks Aussman I was wondering if that issue was resolved properly

    • Give the current demand for Windows 8, I would expect to see heavy discounting in the new year to move stock. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you see this bundled with laptops in the near future.

      • +1

This is not windows 8. It is an iPad competitor. It is selling quite well actually. It won gizmodo tablet of the year.

It is to windows 8 what osx is is to iOS.

It does however have office included

  • +3

    Note you only get 16gb avail.storage link——————> http://www.theverge.com/2012/11/5/3603652/microsoft-surface-…

  • +1

Be careful, the actual storage might be under 20GB

  • There is a 64gb version as well which comes bundled with the touch cover

  • +5

i would wait for the pro

  • +2

PLEASE NOTE: This 32GB version has only got 16GB of free space.

    • What makes you say that?

      • +1

        The ms web page

        • +4

and a law suit in the US

    • so if it uses 16 gig of space for the install, that would explain why no 16gig model exists, it would come with zero space :)

      • If you have a pc you will know how much the OS used.

      • Yes, and Microsoft will have fun naming their tablet.

  • Does Windows RT allow me to download additional software/program at my discretion?

As many tablets only comes with pre-loaded softwares and does not allow personalised download except for apps.

    • +2

it has apps from the MS store and that's it. It's a tablet like any other with the advantage of an almost complete office package (advanced excel features are not available for example)

    • Same as an iPad you download apps from the ms store currently there are about 15000 apps. 48 out of the top 50 iPad apps are in the store

You also get full office for free

The only features it misses are Visual Basic, macros and pivot tables

  • Moved to forums as this is standard price. Nice to know you can preorder, but its not a bargain over other retail outlets.

    • +4

Funny how you didnt bother to move the nexus release into the discussiom area

      • Not funny.

We need to be here every time to see some of these.

Two wrongs dont make a right.

So in that case if a mistake is made, does that mean that now we cant ever invoke some sort of order into the system?

Also will then depend on members reporting the issue and to some extent if there are a lot of votes already for the "deal".

And we are humans and not always perfect or ogres. Nor is this forum taking sides in a technology debate.

I guess the problem is when making an issue of something its better to give some link so we can all comment on the same thing.

          BTW I did also say

So in that case if a mistake is made, does that mean that now we cant ever invoke some sort of order into the system?

To be fair, please acknowledge my Ass cover here :)

And maybe a PM to Scotty might be in order ;)

To be fair, please acknowledge my Ass cover here :)

Agreed, your ass is well & truly covered…I just couldn't resist a dig! :p

  • Unlike the yet to be released Pro version, this RT is not W8 & is just another overpriced tablet /wannabe Ipad/laptop that's about as compatible with your existing M$ software as Apple's ios6 or Android.

Good to see microsoft joining the tablet market.
