  • Will Netflix think Firestick a mobile device or a TV?
Answering myself: most likely it is “a TV” so still have the annoying household restrictions.

    • Also want to know. Need to download content for offline play on cosmos 4k laser while camping. Legally.

    • Nordvpn meshnet can be of help if all devices support NordVPN.

      • I’d recommend Tailscale instead.

Same price at Ye Olde Bezos' Shoppe https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0BTG4S29L

(still not ATL but with Chromecast w/Google TV leaving the building not as much competition at this price range)

10% cashback at amazon or price beat ow

    • Google tv leaving?! What did I miss?

      • No more ccwgtv, only this blob (https://store.google.com/product/google_tv_streamer) at a higher price

        • OH just the chromecast functionality going….not ideal, but i was worried that google was jumping out of the android TV box market. my bad, i didn't read into it enough

      • Google is replacing the Chromecast with Google TV streamer, and pushing out the update to some Chromecast users that have Google TV. Apparently the Google TV streamer comes with a "processor that’s 22 percent faster, along with Thread and Matter integration."

They released the Chromecast over a decade ago, guess we can think of this as a refresh to help Google keep up with the market.

removing of functionality AFTER the device has already been sold should be illegal.

Nvidia did this with their shield gamestream functionality. and now based on what your saying chromecast is doing it with their google TV units.

I managed to get a full refund from Nvidia when they removed gamestream, it wasn't easy though i had to put up a fight to get it. I essentially told them that I bought a shield unit from them and the game stream was one of the key selling points for me, otherwise I would have been better off getting a cheaper Chromecast that can't plug in a USB controller or ethernet.

I still have 2 Nvidia shields, but those ones weren't put in a location that i had intended on using gamestream.

Edit: The only exception to that is if the functionality they remove is via subscription, and that functionality being part of a subscription should be communicated in their marketing material or POS.

          • @whitepuma: Wonder what we should do with Telstra about the Roku TV boxes. They just completely shut the box down.

    • They might still release something to replace the Chromecast HD, to cover all price point.

    Hold. Wait for Black Friday

    • -1

      Waiting for USB-C update.

      • Most likely won't happen.

Amazon Fire TV is moving away from Android. No more sideloading apps. Should have Matter casting. The next Hubbl?

    • +1

They didn't include the Firesticks at all on their Prime Week special in October. Would say it'll be hit and miss if we see lower on Black Friday.

$49 with JB perks (new users)

    • This + 10% off GCs is the way

  • I bought an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) last November, to upgrade to get the faster CPU and more storage.
But I've had lots problems with intermittent dropouts, when Kodi would just stop during a movie with the Gen 2

Eventually, a months ago I just went back to my Gen 1 4K Max, and have not had these problems with it.

I've not found widespread reports of similar problems, so I don't know if there is a problem with the Gen 2, or just my one.
Would Amazon be likely to replace/refund my Gen 2 based on these hard to prove intermittent problems??

  • I've had the 1st gen 4k for about a year. Started out perfect, but gradually getting shittier with updates. More ads, more clicks required to get to netflix, and netflix app it's self is buggy since the last update (UI hangs after finishing a movie or stopping a shitty move, and trying to browse the next one).

    • Have you considered using third party launcher or replace the remote with a newer version that has dedicated buttons for Netflix?

There's also the option of custom ROM.
