Why Do You Hate Elon?

Old mate Musk doesn't seem like a popular boi according to the comments here:

But why?

    What's wrong with Elon?

    • -1

There are various changes in his public perception. Some of them would include:

      • Liked for sustainable practices(Tesla), clean energy(solar city)
      • Various startups - Boring Company, SpaceX, etc
      • Making promises and not meeting them (eg: Full self-driving)
      • Twitter feuds (eg: Mini sub to rescue the kids in the cave)
      • Opposition to withdrawal from Climate change agreements
      • Labour practices for Tesla
      • Payment of Tax
      • Stock price manipulation
      • Crypto
      • Downplaying Covid, and keeping Tesla factories open throughout the pandemic
      • Advocacy for free-speech
      • Tweeting
      • Purchase of X
      • Crash in value of X
      • Various disputes with public figures on Twitter
      • Support for Trump
      • Chats with Putin
  • I liked him when he put his wealth towards innovative things like SpaceX and Tesla and he wasn't in the spotlight.

But then his personality became more public over time. He basically destroyed twitter and now he's one of Trump's best buddies apparently.

Hate is a strong word, but he’s clearly got a massive ego and some kind of messiah complex.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, summed it up pretty well: “Elon desperately wants the world to be saved. But only if he can be the one to save it”

    • That quote is so true

  • Best part of owning a Tesla? Telling everyone about it because you know they'll be pissed off.

Oh wrong thread. Elon sucks. His ties to Putin are a serious concern.

  • +1

Marge: I’m sorry, but my mother said, if you can’t say anything nice about someone, you shouldn’t say anything at all.

  • +5

Geez, enough with the Tesla/Elon/SpaceX posts..

  • +3

Now we've done Tesla, SpaceX, Elon himself.

What next? Starlink, SolarCity, Grimes, Heard, Boring company?

    • It's an interesting comparison though when you frame the questions slightly differently, people dislike Elon less when you associate him with SpaceX but dislike him more in the context of Tesla.

What next? Starlink, SolarCity, Grimes, Heard, Boring company?

Boxabl is next to market, so next post will be "Why do people hate Boxabl owners"

Compared to other leaders, the reason should be obvious. He is a self-publicist. He puts all his wild thoughts out there.

Nobody hates the CEO of Toyota or Northrop Grumman, because they have no idea who TF they are.

It is like American politics: Harris thought she could beat Trump on hate, that so many people dislike Trump, she just had to keep her head down and stay quiet. If nobody knew anything about her, if she did not announce any real policies, she'd win. Well, that is how she was advised, but (sadly) it turned out that a lot of people just did not bother to vote.

    • You forgot the real reason. A country full of gun fellating Americans with their fate in their own hands.
Trump winning is a great result. The only way to suffocate the cancer once and for all is to let him do it himself.

It's the Roman Empire all over again

      • The way you just post whatever random insult crosses your mind - it reminds me of somebody :-)

        • Don't you read the your own ideological slurs?

  • +2

I don't like Elon because he called the man that saved the Thai kids a pedo. And then, when sued for defamation, somehow won the case. He is a terrible person that will destroy a hero becuase they didn't use his idea.

Oh, and not because he fathered many children, but because he parented none of them.

    • -4

You only know the parts of that story that you want to hear.
You choose to hate. You are a hypocrite.

(they were both behaving badly. You'd think someone in Musk's position would have a thicker skin, but he had a lot of stress at the time, so we got to see what he really thought, which was sad.)

      • +1

Do you think the mini-submarine would have worked?

      • +3

, but he had a lot of stress at the time,

Does his stress explain 2 decades of absent parenting?
Just a sh1tty, selfish person that cares about nothing other than himself. It speaks volumes when (all) his children literally hate him.

        • -6

I'm hearing a lot of hate and some lies from you. Why do you choose to believe all the bad things? Does it make you feel superior?

Jenna (then Xavier) rejected Musk because of their radical Marxist politics, believing all capitalists are evil. Beyond that, you are vilifying him for your own gratification.

Musk is deeply flawed, but who isn't? The world needs more people like him, and fewer haters.

          • @bargaino:

Does it make you feel superior?

Nah, I just have a lot of stress, so you get to see what I really think…

          • @bargaino: How about the guy is simply a corrupted (profanity) devoid of any true altruism? He doesn't have a streak of unselfishness in his oily body. He is there for him, and then some.He will fall heavily and the applause will be deafening. I'm looking fwd to the public brawl between him and Emperor Trump. Beware the Ides of March ,boys.

As if the world needs more filthy rich sociopaths

  • +3

I just dislike people full of shit. He's happy to use tax incentives and government funding to prop uo his companies and own wealth but then shits on inefficient government funding and that other companies shouldn't get handouts

He'll talk up how climate forward he is and how the environment is important then sides with Trump who is obviously against it and take away government incentives for climate change.

He's just a grifter who misinterprets luck for his own genius. Read his biography and you'll see plenty of examples.

  • +1

I’m just here for the bargains

  • Crypto grifter? What about just general grifter.

  • Why do some people (extreme lefties?) "hate" so much? What options are there to help such people recuperate and become better socially adjusted? We should remember that they are fellow countrymen who need help.

Is it a further pointer that people should spend less time online? Maybe apps should be pay-per-view!

    • You can take lefties out of there. You'll find the hate is there from both extremes.

      • -3

No, he has a real point. It used to be we lefties were all about tolerance and love! The conservatives were the ones who liked to have strict social and religious rules, and condemned anyone who did not follow them.

Somewhere in the last couple of decades that flipped. Now it is the far-left who preach the rules, and are intolerant of anyone who breaks their rules. Hateful even. How did that happen? (And I'm referring to the new woke left, not the more traditional centre-left such as the Labor party.)

        • -2

So you are saying the right no longer preach rules or condemn people who don't follow their social and religious ideas?

All that "they're letting drag queens read to children at the library" hysteria was something the left cooked up?

          • -1

@Crow K: Please don't put words in my mouth. Of course that still exists.
But it has been eclipsed by the preaching of upright moral values by the left. The gospels of diversity and identity politics. The cardinal sins of mis-gendering and micro-agressions. The original sin of White Privilege. … you get the idea.

OK, there is bias in where you live. That is just my lived experience, but someone living in a country town may well see far more conservative preaching. Where are you?

            • -2

@bargaino: Words in your mouth? you said

Now it is the far-left who preach the rules, and are intolerant of anyone who breaks their rules

              Not

Now it is the far-left as well as the far-right who etc etc etc

Your entire point was it "flipped", and when you got called out on that, it became "well the left do it more", another unsubstantiated position

You're allowed to have your biases, but you're speaking nonsense. It might be a good time to think about and articulate what some of the "rules" each side are advocating for as well.

This feels like "the woke left want us to stop making jokes about gay people, they're so intolerant" levels of stupid

              • -2

@Crow K: call me when you have grown up, and I look forward to an adult discussion.

                • @bargaino: "Growing up" isn't mindlessly acquiescing when someone says something idiotic like "the right used to try to control people's lives but now it's flipped and the left do it now".

Bad ideas get challenged by adults.

You had a shit take and you won't own it. Take your own advice and grow up.

        • I want what you're on

  • I ticked 'all of the above' for Musk. But the latest news of him sticking his nose into Infowars and the Sandy Hook parents desire for it to be sold to The Onion has somehow felt like a new low even for that mouth breather.

  • Can I offer an alternative to hatred?

I've probably said I hate trump, or at least despise. But a healthier way of looking at it is that the man is utterly lacking in the qualities we want in a political leader.
The real problem is systemic - how did a person like that get the Republican nomination?
The man is by all accounts charming in person, like most politicians. If he was your uncle running a real-estate agency, you'd tolerate him. His is just completely unfit for the position he will soon hold. The problem is in the democracy.

Is that a reasonable alternative to hate, or am I on a lost cause?

  • He wants people to work 80 hours a week for free in his new department.

    • -2

Clearly lazy people don't need to volunteer :)

  • -3

People complaining about Elon are a bunch of sore losers. Elon is awesome and Tesla is the best car company

  • +2

Elon I feel is a business person who is being pumped up to be this pioneer/genius by his fanbase and himself.

    Merged from Elon Musk Backlash

I am not an Elon Musk fanboy, nor do I use any of his company's products, but I do admire his ability to achieve & get things done.

I don't really understand why (seemingly) many Australians dislike him.

If I was in the US, and got sacked due to his DOGE actions, I probably wouldn't like him purely for being sacked, but what he is doing over there, just makes me think about how many inefficient government employees there appear to be in Australia.

At all levels of government, and also those private organizations that run off government funds & grants.

    • +1

I don't really understand why (seemingly) many Australians dislike him

Most of his products sold because of him; hence, he didn't even have to advertise. So what do you think will happen when he becomes a tosser?

      • But isn't your comment favorable to Musk, as he risks making financial losses in the short term, due to his current actions with DOGE?

    • but what he is doing over there, just makes me think about how many inefficient government employees there appear to be in Australia.

The word "appear" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence (but to be fair, it's also doing a lot of heavy lifting over there in America as well)

If you're settled in for the culture wars and don't particular care whether the stuff is true or not, it's not a big issue, but there's still a significant amount of people who care about whether one of the richest people in the world is openly spreading lies and propaganda, however.

      • Knowing the truth is always good, but unfortunately getting access to the truth is not always possible.

    • -1

but I do admire his ability to achieve & get things done.

      Oh, FFS… stop reading/listening to/watching SkyNews.

      • +1

I havent seen what SkyNews are saying about him.

    • I am not an Elon Musk fanboy, …but I do admire his ability to achieve & get things done.

I guess a lot of people struggle to have two thoughts in their head at the same time.

With someone like Elon, asking if you like or dislike him is a stupid and irrelevant question.
We should be able to admire the qualities of unrivaled team-building in the tech space, and still be horrified at some other things.

  • Can you update the poll to include the option:

    • because his enormous wealth is built on government contracts, government bailouts and other government (taxpayer) money.
    • shouldn't you blame the government then?

    • Looks like I can no longer edit the post.

    • If his success was a one-off, you could easily make such a put-down without being accused of envy.

But no, the guy did the impossible more than once. It is like when a scientist like Newton or Einstein makes a huge breakthrough, you can say they got lucky. And both of them were in the right place at the right time. But then they do it again and again. And an honest person, even if he did dislike some personal qualites ( with good reason in Newton's case) would have to admit grudging admiration.

Yes, Musk may well be an arsehole. But if you cannot acknowledge his impressive talents and achievements, then so are you. I'd rather be the arsehole who brought electric cars back from the dead.

      • Nothing you said responds to anything I said. Are you sure you're not a politician?

        • It was a very lazy post. What does it even mean?

      • List five thing Elon Musk accomplished last week.

  • Nobody assassinated him.
He didn't lose billions of dollars
    He didn't crash another rocket
He didn't launch autonomous self driving cars
He didn't admit to increasing the population.
