How unethical it is for EB to release this deal again when so many from the previous deal have not had their problems rectified

By the way NEW in EB's language can also mean used or refurbished

    • +2

I was lucky enough to get a brand new one, but after reading all the dramas others have had with their tablets, I couldn't recommend buying from EB.

    • what problems? any links? i missed last deal and will consider this one, but would definitely know the problems first.

      • +3

        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87361

Their ad clearly stated the tablets were brand new at the time of the sale, but a lot of people received ex demo/refurbished units complete with scratches, smears and completely dead batteries too. Not cool.

        • edit this is for puff dady and elijah:

how can you be sure yours are not refub, yes they are plastic wrap but all refub would be re-pack nicely. unless you have the box in perfect condition and also in plastic wrap, there is a chance all are demo/refubh items while sold as NEW

        • Thinking all refurbs are packed nicely.. You clearly haven't read the other thread!
Box was in mint condition, not so much as a fingerprint on the tablet, and also by doing what the following link suggests: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/21101/how-to-tell…

        • @erwinsie My seal was intact not broken…, That's how I can be sure… :)

EDIT: It could also be because I ordered mine with the Moto deal posted earlier Link… lol

        • Yeah, the seal on mine was intact too, and didn't appear it had another one put over it like others have claimed also.

        • I too received a refurb unit in that sale. Strangely all the Xoom 2's (that I have seen, heard about) were new & sealed. Indeed, very unethical of EB!

All I can say is, I GOT MINE ! what a beauty ! since then I can't seem to find my iPad… lol :P

EDIT: Thankfully, I got a brand new one, since I reside in QLD, got it the next day ! ;)

  • Any reason to buy this over the Nexus 7?

    • AMOLED screen is arguably better, and it has expandable storage. Some might prefer the brushed aluminium finish to the back, as well, as opposed to the N7's leather.

      • nexus 7 is much much cheaper feeling with a plastic back

also i hope you like the variable nexus 7 build quality (eg. screen lift)

i have both and the samsung has a better screen, sharpness is the same but the amoled has better colour fidelity

nexus 7 is much much cheaper feeling with a plastic back

I quite like it; it hardly feels cheap. Some may like the backing of the 7.7, some might like the Nexus. It's entirely subjective.

also i hope you like the variable nexus 7 build quality (eg. screen lift)

Never had an issue with mine, nor have many others. Those were mainly early-batch issues, and should be all cleared up by now. And while we're talking about faults, I hope you like the lack of official updates and the eventual AMOLED burn-in on your 7.7. No device is faultless, and I don't know why you're heavily favouring the 7.7, since it has it's own distinct shortcomings.

have both and the samsung has a better screen, sharpness is the same but the amoled has better colour fidelity

AMOLED is oversaturated, which people may or may not like. I have a Galaxy S2, and I like it, though I'm equally fine with the screen on the N7.

        • i'm fine with ICS and the reality is by the time Key Lime Pie comes around both of these will be yesterday's news anyway…

the lack of hdmi and sd card kills the nexus for me as is the horrible forced use of a google account on the nexus

dont care for it… the samsung boots the desktop and lets you do what you want

        • If the plastic back makes it lighter I think I would prefer that to an aluminuim and heavier back.

        • yeah because aluminium is so heavy

    • +1

Not the overall pros and cons, but weighted against each other. Might of missed a lot. On the processor side its debatable which one is better though i think consensus weighs towards the tegra combo gaming wise (nexus)

      Nexus 7 Pros:
      - direct google upgrade
      - stock android
      - rubber backing (personal preference)
      - nfc

      Nexus 7 Cons:
      - screen not as good
      - no rear camera
      - no micro sd slot

      Galaxy Pros:
      - samsung touch ui
      - micro sd slot, up to 32gb
      - amoled screen
      - slightly larger screen
      - rear camera

      Galaxy Cons
      - samsung touch ui
      - comes with honeycomb 3.2
      - non-standard 30pin connector

  • These EB games are dodgy people bought 3 tablets of them and they're definitely not new

  • +2

    This was posted earlier today

Just called EB games. I wanted a new tablet to replace the refurb one that I received. The representative advised that they only have about 20 or so left in stock, and that all 20 of these have their seals broken. Basically, the representative said they after they received so many 'mad monday' orders, they recalled stock from stores, which would have included display models, etc. She advised that you can return the tablet to any EB store for a refund if you are not happy. She also said that they could no discount the tablet any further just because it is a refurb model.
Kinda sucks, but that's were I am at.

So does this mean there are only about 20 tablets up for this sale? But you can see the sort of run around they are giving some people, Not good enough EB!!

Please take a screen shot too. You may need it in your defence.

    • Buy this one, and return the other…..

      • +1

Perhaps you missed the part wher he said he was told they only have 20 left in stock, and all of them were refurbs….

  • got xoom 2 for 278 from eb games. definitely brand new. May be im just lucky

  • I rang and was told that they just put piles of empty boxes out on display in the shop whilst the contents were stored away. My box was damaged and hard to tell if the tab was brand new or refurbished. Not Happy Jan.

This has to be new, on the website it says

    "
    Online Price

    BUY NEW

    $218.00
    "

    BUY NEW it says.

Can anyone remember if it said that during the Mad Monday special?

    • +1

Said that on, mad monday sale. I posted a pdf print out on the
Last thread if you want to see it. Its towards the end page 2 or 3.

    • +1

Yes it did and no it wasn't. I was told unequivocally yesterday that all the "New" stock being sold was opened ex-demo. The rep tried to argue that it can be sold as "New" because it's never been sold to anyone. As I don't have the time or patience to argue the semantics of a fairly common adjective with teenage dipsh**s I will be getting a refund from the local store later today.

I've already contacted the ACCC about this and will be lodging a complaint with Fair Trading.

Obviously I will never be dealign with this company ever again.

  • Mine was OPENED, but everything seemed in tacked
but there was no charge left in the battery
    so definitely been played with
    overhaul all is ok
something has to be said about the ethics ,if its advertised as new, REFURBS should not be acceptable
But I don't think mine was a refurb as its mint otherwise

PS using Samsung's Kies software it updated to ICS no problems

I was kicking myself for missing out the deal last time around and the price is really tempting, but going by the experience of fellow OzBargainers I think it is better to give it a miss.
Not really worth spoiling your mood over the Christmas season unless your really desperate and wanting to test your luck. I guess there will be more similar deals to come.

  • Oh no, didn't know about this whole refurb drama. I'm giving it to hubby as a surprise, the invoice stated return has to be within 7 days, but with Christmas pressies, will they give me bit m ore time with the return/refund/exchange? Only picked it up yesterday from Aust Post, as the courier couldnt be bothered coming into the office. I won't be happy if it's not new, as advertised. Anyone ever return EB product after 7 days?

    • EB usually have a Christmas returns policy, not sure if that applies this year, may be worth ringing up to ask? If they don't I would open it and preinspect it yourself, would far out weigh the risk of having to return it post 7 days policy.

    • Your hubby will be happy to see what you bought him and decide how to deal with EB later I guess. It is your intention for a good surprise that counts. EB 7 days return policy is for change of mind not for "product does not fit description" exchange or refund. You should be fine to ask for an exchange or refund if he opens it and finds out it is not brand new.

    • Thanks for the replies guys, fingers crossed….

  • FWIW, 64gb microsd works perfectly fine in the 7.7. The SAMOLED+ is like watching a plasma tv. Perfect for viewing movies or tv shows on the train or airplane.

  • +1

Last time EB advertised new units [BUY NEW} and sent refurbished ones. That practice is illegal.

  • Originally got one from Mobiciti deal and have just now bought one for my 11 year old. Perfectly adequate for what he needs it for and will find a home in the lounge if he tires of it.
Re; is it a refurb? I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

    Other options were;
    - 10 inch, but SIM not needed and better screen / processor for the price with the 7.7
    - Nexus 7 - very close to getting one of these instead, in fact if i hadn't seen this deal today it would have happened.

  • Don't buy from EB… You'll most likely receive our returned refurbished/used units. I would have waited for a new unit for exchange, but just settled for a refund instead.

    • +1

Your old refurbished unit will get shipped out to another poor bugger who will be expecting a brand new unit. All these refurbished units will end up back in their system and get redistributed as "new" stock.

  • +3

demo/display units marked as NEW, these were $198 before, same refurbished units are going for $218 now.

    • -2

these were $198 before, same refurbished units are going for $218 now.

That's irrelevant. That price was a past sale, it has no bearing on the current sale price.

        1. stock is proven to be ex-demo, floor stock with damaged box and broken seal

        2. hence raising $20 above the price they were selling these before while still label these as 'BUY NEW' is not a deal

you just don't get the point.

        • +1

I get the fact they are refurbished, I never disputed that. What I'm saying is, that the previous price isn't relevant, since that deal has since expired (without even considering the fact they're refurbished).

By all means, neg away if you feel the refurbished issue justifies it, but the price from a previous sale has no relevance to the price of this sale, regardless of the condition.
