Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 16GB Wi-Fi - $198 + ~ $7 Postage (Was $378) - EB Games Online

1210

Thought this was a good price for a premium quality tablet - Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 16GB wifi (was $378)

I've got this tablet and its great especially after upgrading it to ICS! still one of the best 7 inch tablets on the market. I've tried the Galaxy Tab 2 7 inch and think the 7.7 is much better with the Super AMOLED display.

This tech guy on youtube did a comparison between the tab 7.7 with the ipad Mini, and still reckons the tab 7.7 is still pretty decent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywPXJOUtZmM&feature=g-user-u

Let me know what you think.

Enjoy

My Samsung Kies couldn't find any ICS upgrade for my GT7.7" can you share the link for the ICS upgrade? If there is ICS sounds like a good deal as Honey Comb is "laggy".

    • +4

i couldn't use Kies either because the ICS update is available in Aus. I used this other thing I found online called Odin - you gotta download the ICS firmware (which is apparently the real deal) and Odin.
the download links and instructions are on this website:

      http://www.theandroidsoul.com/ics-android-4-0-4-update-samsu…

It works fine on my tab 7.7 32gb version. Do it at your own risk though… I take no responsibility if it doesn't work for you lol

      • +2

I take back every bad thing I've ever said about iTunes…Samsung Kies is quite possibly the worst bit of software I've attempted to use in decades!

'Attempted' being the key word here…after wasting a good deal of time with the endless install loop, constant crashing & sheer lack of ability to connect to a device that even Windows could see, I just gave up on it & went the Odin route…thanks mr_vino!

        • Agreed, where android falls down the hardest is the pc integration, photo, video and music syncing. None of the solutions I've found are particularly good. Even doubletwist is a bit naff and that's compared to crappy iTunes.

Say one thing for the Zune, the software worked. Well, it did after a few months of release anyway.

Google needs to step up and fix this.

there is currently an update for the 7.7 p6810 - i believe it was just release a few days ago

i just updated samsung kies and after connecting my 7.7 (32gb wifi only version) it said there was a firmware update available

      Ok. Update complete.
      Service version : PDA:LPP / CSC:LJ2 (XSA)

definitely seems like ICS to me =)

      • +1

Great … sounds like it is easy to get ICS on it. Thanks. Jelly Bean would be nice … maybe one day …

        • +1

Samsung did not include the Tab 7.7 in its list of Jelly Bean upgradable devices.
Excellent hardware let down badly, by Samsung's failure to provide upgrades.

        • Maybe a 3rd party rom can do it at some stage in the future. When the hardware is that good … somebody might try it …

        • well 3rd party rom sometimes are not stable enough or doesnt have all features works

      • +1

@reptile, how did you upgrade to ICS? I connected mine p6810 to PC and tried to upgrade via Kies. Waited for the download to complete and the Kies just closed itself and obviously my P6810 is still on 3.2 Honey Comb.
Edit: Upgraded to ICS now. Took almost 1 hr with my 3y/o desktop PC. MY stupid 10y/o laptop kept on closing Kies itself half way through but desktop PC went all the way to the end of the ICS upgrade. Thanks again reptile!

  • +2

I'm uber impressed with this Tab. Form factor and screen resolution is perfect. Plenty of tips in the XDA and Whirlpool forums on how to upgrade to ICS which makes the interface smooth as a baby's bum!

  • +1

That's the one I bought for $248 earlier!
Just rung up and canceled, which was no dramas.
Now to reorder at the cheaper price!

    • +1

I remember OW still has this model for $348, if you happen to be somewhere around OW can try a 5% price beat before this deal expires.

      • That's not a bad idea, got one just down the road, I'll do that now. Cheers!
Edit: Just rung my 3 locals, all had no stock unfortunately.
All good, this is still a decent price for it!

  • Again great value,I had trouble getting it for the JB price of $217 for the 8gig model the other week
    No one would touch it.
Must be some good value Quad Core Tablets on there way soon for these prices.
These units are great thanks to the MicroSD slot
i might buy one for my Dad for Kindle
    cheers

    • Wow, I'm displaying my total noobness with tablets here, but any old tablet can be used as a Kindle? I never knew that. Might get one for mother dearest for Xmas then too :)

      • +3

yes theres a kindle app for both android and ios which can be synced between devices including a kindle so if your on page 123 of book abc on your ipad then swap to your Samsung phone and open the same app you'll be on page 123 of book abc. Though I highly recommend getting an actual kindle for people who will spend hours looking at it as its a lot less strain on the eyes

        • +1

Nice, that's good to know. Cheers mate.

        • +1

Agreed , I use the White on black setting, which is easy on the eyes

PS I did not realise this is the original version I thought it was the TAB 2
Still good value, many uses, heaps of apps.

        • This one is FAR better than the Tab 2… This isn't the 7", this is the 7.7. Higher screen resolution, better/faster CPU, etc etc etc… FAR better.

  • Great price! Its a really well built tab. If i didn't already have 2 of them I'd buy lol.

    • +1

      SD card slot FTW ;)

  • +5

Would probably prefer the Nexus 7 deal posted earlier :)

    • +5

Nexus 7 is a great tablet - however this one has an expandable memory which some people prefer :)

      • +1

Agree. Expandable memory i.e. $64 for a class 10 64GB micro SD is one of the reasons a "Non-Nexus" Android tablets are still selling quite well ATM.

      • It's not just that you can expand the memory but you can have multiple SD cards so for example if you've got kids you could have one SD card just for kids movies when driving on long trips.

    • +1

why? nexus doesnt have memory slot.. but has faster processor.

      • also higher resolution screen, and latest android version, and faster android updates. note in this thread people talking about the 7.7 only now getting ICS (4.0.x?). The nexus 7 is already up to Jellybean 4.2.

        • also higher resolution screen

The N7 and the SGT 7.7 have the same resolution (1280 x 800)

        • oops, my bad. higher PPI then on the N7 (same res, smaller screen) :)

        • Edit: never mind

      • Maybe exc3ll3nce doesn't need expandable memory?

    • My reason for preferring the Nexus 7 is firmware updates. As xugi mentioned this would be a much more attractive tablet if it ran Jelly Bean and later upgrades.

  • The Screen for this table is amazing, currently using paranoid android JB ROM and pretty stable.

  • +1

That is a KICK-ASS deal. Good work!

  • -1

I wonder those couldn't make up their minds can add to cart now and checkout later at the same price even after the deal expires?

  • This or Toshiba AT270 7.7" Quad-Core Tablet $245? hmm

    • +1

I'd go the thrive. The GT7.7 has officially been abandoned by samsung. So the thrive, with maybe a 1% chance of an update is better than this with 0%

      • +1

Although the 7.7 has decent XDA support with a 90% functional JB CM10 port. Not sure so much about the thrive…

This is a fantastic deal by the way! Just sold my 3G model for $375. Hehe tempted to even buy back in for the wifi model at this price if I didn't already have the chromebook on the way.

        • Thrive has official Toshiba ICS…that's about it. Same with Excite 7.7….

    • +1

The QUAD core TOSHIBA is great value also but is getting hard to get.
Also EBAY has millions of covers screen protectors etc for samsung, sweet f all for the Toshiba

  • Wow that's crazy cheap. SAMOLED FTW.

  • +1

This is so hard to resist…
How can justify having two 7.7 tablets… Already ordered the Toshiba AT270

    • Easy. Leave one in the bathroom and one on your bedside table. Probably not a good idea to swap them around though as it wouldn't be hygienic.

      • Maybe I disguise it as a Christmas present to the Mrs.. She's already made it quite clear that she has no need for one, so she certainly won't be using it.

pitoui: was thinking more like one for home one for the office. Got the old 10" Acer for that bathroom already.

      • I also picked up the AT270 with sweet eff all accessories, got a screen protector on ebay though. This has the build quality of the Toshiba at $50 less, but the speed is going to be a concern, and the Nexus 7 has the speed but has a much worse feature set and the build quality lacking. Go the AT270, something tells me a quad core for an extra $50 will be worth it, otherwise pony down for the AT100 if you're not caring about the 10.1" and the stubby build!

    • same

  • Help me…. Too tempting really.

  • Just grabbed one! Thanks a bunch OP, was pissed at myself for missing out on one of these in previous sales & now it's available again but even cheaper…sweet! :D

  • With regards to the nexus7 memory expansion. I got a otg cable from eBay for $3.49 delivered and installed nexus media importer for free. Now I can play movies straight from a USB.

    • +3

yeah but who wantes to carry around the cable and a USB. The problem with this is you never have it when you need it. I use the OTG and additional 64GB USBs as additional storage for the extra long trips.

  • -3

    Is this new or refurbished?

    • If you click on the picture it said BUY NEW.

      • +2

Although they have been known to ship out store demos.
        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81715

        • get ready to return it to your local eb

        • Thanks for the info. I have printed the web page and will not be impressed if this is the case! I have been wanting a tablet for over two years and finally shelled out the money for one - will be very upset if it is not brand new!!

        • +1

It's had 1500 clicks through from ozbargain alone (not including anyone who found it through the earlier Zoom deal). Even at a 10% conversion rate that's 150 sales and it is still showing as in stock. I am hoping that this indicates it is new batch - not ex models….

  • I am trying to place an order but I get "some information was missing" error message. :-(

    • It might have been ozbargained?
Edit: No, it'll let me add it to the cart and checkout still. That sucks, dude :(

    • +1

I tested to added to the cart and no problem but I am not going to buy this. I already have new iPad and just bought Kobo Glo for ebook reading.

BTW, it said " In stock items estimated for delivery on 18/12/2012" so a bit too long for local delivery.

      • +1

The problem was after payapal approval. It seems my DOB was missing from the EB account detail. I was able to place the order.
I already have a P6800 [3G], and this tablet is amazing. No doubts that Nexus 7 is the best, but this one has bigger & better screen + MicroSD slot. For someone who doesn't need to be upgrading the OS version to the latest one, and just want the tablet for watching movies, email, web, music, this is the best choice.

        • I only want it to use when on travel for videos/email/FB, and as a glorified map. Was a ton of good reviews for it. Couldn't say no.

        • How can you say "No doubts that Nexus 7 is the best" and then list reason how this is better
"has bigger & better screen + MicroSD slot"
The fact is Nexus 7 is only the best if you rate updates as the most important factor.

I'm with Puff Braddy, "travel for videos/email/FB, and as a glorified map"

In my eyes this kills the Nexus hands down.

    • Works fine for me.

Got all the way to the checkout and account create request.

  • Does anyone know how long will it take to deliver to Perth (WA)?

  • +1

    great value

just bought one damn you all to hell

i'm even fine with ics as i dont see JB as that big a deal

  • +2

Bought one even though we now have 4 tablets at home!!
    Damn you Ozbargain!!!! :)

  • Thanks, just got one too - another Christmas present sorted (yay !!)

    • +1

ahh thanks mate - was worried that you weren't going to get me anything for christmas ;) lol

  • I am not really into the tablets so forgive me if I am wrong.

Why would someone buy this when you can get the Nexus 7 for another $50.

    • Bigger screen 7.7 and superamoled screen.

    • +1

Just wondering which tablet has a mini HDMI output?

      • AT270 if think.

        • +1

No for HDMI the AT270 requires the separtate dock for $99.95 from Toshiba direct.

The Samsung requires an extra adapter for HDMI that can be purchased for around $65.

        • Ok :)

      • +1

I got a HDMI adaptor for my Samsung 7.7. I think it cost about $30 from memory.

    • Just read some of the replies above your.

    • +1

Micro SDcard for those who prefer to store a reasonable amount of music and movies and don't want to hassle with storage limitations.

  • damn cant decide between tab 7.7 or toshiba AT270, i only know at270 is $50 more..
any side by side specs comparison link?

    • Of course Samsung because of bigger selection of custom ROMs.

    • its actually only $40 if you include the shipping cost for this one ($7 for me to Brisbane). I went with this as it has more accessories on eBay and a eBay resale market if I choose to sell it in 12 months.

    • +2

Both apparently have the same screen, so top notch quality there.

      Main differences are:

      Toshiba Excite 7.7
      Quad Core
ICS out of the box. locked bootloader, No ROMS availble.
Can't charge via MicroUSB extra charge cable is $49.95
HDMI requires dock can only buy from Toshiba $100
Accessories are pretty much non exsistent

      Samsung 7.7
      Dual Core
Honeycomb 3.2 out of the box, not sure about official ICS update. But root and ROMS are avialble
      Can charge via MicroUSB
HDMI requires adapter available all over the place approx $65
Accessories availbility including 3rd party is plentiful

  • -2

this is galaxt tab 1 right and not tab 2? so this is this old model isnt it?

    • +3

There is no updated model of the 7.7. It beats the pants off the 7" Tab 2.0, so 'old model' or not, it's quite a good buy.

    • yes, it's the older & better model. Not the budget "2" version.

  • +1

Is this the one I bought 2 yrs back from the Telstra sale? Want to buy it but might already own one?

    • +3

i don't know, i wasn't there when you bought your tablet 2 years ago from the Telstra sale lol

      • -1

You obviously weren't on ozbargain either when most of us bought one lol.

        • the 7.7 was released around Jan 2012 so it was not available 2 years back. lol

    • The 7.7 was released in February of this year, so I highly doubt it's the one you have.

This one, it was the original 7" seemed like a pretty big deal on ozb at the time.

Is this one better? As that was a 3g model.

        • +2

the one you have is the original 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab. it is the older version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7".

samsung galaxy tab 7.7" is part of the "premium range", which was released after the original SGT but before the SGT2.

whether it is "better" than your OG SGT depends on what you want/need. it has a bigger better screen, is more powerful and runs newer android. however, this one is wifi only, and therefore it does not have 3G.

therefore, if you need 3G, it is not better. if you don't, then it most likely is.

        • Thanks for the helpful info

    • Go into settings then into about tablet.

    • No. That was the GT1000 tab with 3G.

  • The used one in ebay had final bid price around $200 to $250, from past few days.
$198 for a brand new one sound good.
