Just finished Season 2 - OMG just the best show. I can't wait to see more. Bring it.

Best episode overall is definitely Scandal In Belgravia. Best scene would have to be one in Buckingham Palace. Laughing just thinking about it.

Edit: For anyone wondering the free episode is 2.53GB in HD.

why is apple compression so crap?

Several shows can be encoded in 1080p at 1.2gb etc..or less

I guess they encode for the hardware decoding chips on idevices to be able to play without using too much power / too much processor. The more compression you use the more power you use to decompress. Software compression jumps ahead all the time, but they are supporting hardware chips 4/5 years old now.

        • Lol. I'm with the other side.

Some guidelines I copied from a h264 site.

720p using the h264 codec requires around 4000kbps bitrate to be unchallenged in a blind test. 1080p which has double the pixels should be encoded at 8000kbps.

This is why sometimes 720p on itunes look better than 1080p, especially on 40+ inch screens. Itunes caps 1080p at 5000kbps, 720p at 4000kbps. These are approximations.

        • Of course a really nice crf x264 encode is going to be superior, but there is way more to it than "720p needs 4Mbps", "1080 needs double that", all sorts of variables influence the quality including both the nature of the source and the encode settings.

One big factor is that iTunes 720p only uses H.264 Main profile whereas 1080p uses H.264 High Profile, which increases the quality and compression efficiency.

ooh thanks, just got the apple tv, this will do nicely to test it out, cheers

  • does anyone know how to get this to play on an android device? all the programs i've tried don't work

    • Except music everything else on iTunes store is encrypted using apple's fairplay drm. Google is your friend if you are looking to free your purchases.

    Awesome awesome show.

  • Nice show but i wouldn't buy Sherlock on iTunes and be locked into DRM. You can buy the whole 2 seasons on blu-ray at full HD 1080p from Zavvi for about $23 AUD delivered.

I nearly lost access until May 2013 to every movie and tv show i had on iTunes including the whole 4 seasons of Battlestar Galactica and the first 6 seasons of Doctor Who which i previously bought because iTunes mistakenly thought i had used up my 5 computer authorisations. That's gay DRM. It actually locked me out of all my purchases.

    • That scary me to.

    • There are definitely some other advantages to getting this season on Blu Ray too - the Blu Ray has the extra pilot episode they filmed before completely re-shooting the one that eventually went to air (the improvement in quality is obvious), two of the episodes have commentary and there is also a behind the scenes feature.

Whilst I definitely agree with buying the Blu-Ray…

      a) You can use Requiem to strip the DRM from all iTunes files, leaving you with an untouched H.264 video + AC3 or AAC audio that you can keep as MP4 or remux to MKV. I do this with anything I buy on iTunes (usually stuff not available in HD physically, like Community or Black Mirror)

      b) You can reset your 5 computer authorisations back to zero once a year.

      c) "Gay"? Really? Are you twelve?

  • $13.99 now…
Oh well, i'll download it for free instead.

    • The first episode is still free.

    • Yes, that season is normally $19.99 in HD.

  • Nice find! Downloading right now!
