Roadworthy Certificate $19 - Cheltenham VIC ONLY

100

This may be useful for those who are buying/selling/transferring your car to Victoria registration.

I have confirmed with the shop and was told that if your car got no issue, you will receive a RWC. RWC usually cost $88 - $150 and lots of shops are being an ass and ask you to fix lots of clearly minor issue… Even if you don't fix at their shop, the assessment cost of $88 - $150 is non-refundable.

So this deal is a good one, if your car got no issue then you get RWC for only $19, even if this shop is dodgy, they still have to give you a report and it just cost you $19 anyway :)

UPDATE: new url for the deal, this deal is still active :)

  • majority of rwc these days is 130+, this is a really good deal.

Im just wondering how much you will end up spending in the end on repairs from faults they will pick.

    • +1

They will pick all the faults :3

      • +5

and if there are no faults they will still find something.

        • Ok, that's what I was getting at but thanks for making it clearer for everyone.

    • well, you can either get it fixed elsewhere or get a RWC done elsewhere ;) at least you don't waste $130 for rogue shop :)

  • Is this just a yearly rego check? Equivalent to a NSW pink slip or blue slip?

    • Vic doesn't have these pink slips. You need a road worthy cert to transfer rego/sell a car

    • +2

Nope. We only need a rego check when we sell a vehicle in Vic. No annual checks. If your car is unroadworthy, you have to keep it and keep driving it, because it's worth nothing to sell without RWC ;-)

I guess that's no worse than NSW, where if you can get a car past rego, you're obliged to keep driving it for the rest of the year, regardless of whether it's safe. And you wouldn't dream of wasting money putting new tyres on a car that might fail rego, for something too expensive to repair, in a couple of months.

I'd just about guarantee that these guys will be finding lots of "sand blasted" windscreens. Microscopic blasting that no mortal could possibly see with the naked eye, until the sun hits that critical angle and you're immediately blinded and kill somebody. Nice kick-backs from the local windscreen guy. Vicroads has explicitly said that winscreen blasting is nonsense, but they won't intervene if you get pulled up for it. Like I did, on a 30,000km car with a perfect windscreen that would have cost $1500 to replace. At least with these guys you're only throwing away $19, unlike the $150 I threw away on that one (the next inspector thought the windscreen was fine).

      • +1 for your experience!

      • FYI, the RWC is good for only 30 days so you will need to sell/transfer it within that time period.

I had my car checked out (by another guy) and they also found that my windscreen had sand blasting and I agree with you that it was BS. They also found a small nick on my back right tyre (think of a small shaving off the sidewall) an that also meant I needed a new tyre as well as being unroadworthy.

        Regards
        Daniel

      • I experienced the same thing. My friend bought an old Toyota Paseo for only $1000, and that bastard ask him to replace the seat belt because it is "frailed", the seat belt is clearly fine not even torn at all. In the end we have to forfeit the $88 with that bastard and get the RWC done elsewhere.

I have already bought one so will let you guys know if this shop is dodgy or not. Even if they pick up problem, you can get it fixed elsewhere anyway and even if they are dodgy you don't waste $100 and can get RWC elsewhere but still remember that there is always a risk that the new shop is dodgy as well… So each time you brought your car elsewhere, you will forfeit your assessment fee of $100…

  • Every time I read about the bullshit hoops you guys over east have to jump through to get your cars registered/sold, makes me glad all my cars are SA rego (and even if I move over east, they will stay that way).

No yearly roadworthy checks, no point-of-sale roadworthy checks, ever :)

    • +1

And all transferring it to SA rego requires (besides an SA address) is a compliance plate check to make sure the vehicle isn't stolen or written off

  • +1

yeah but after 3 months living in VIC, YOU MUST change over your Rego. or get a big fine! Welcome to the Nanny State.

    • How can they prove you have moved to Victoria?

If I left the cars registered at my parents' address, transferred to my parents' names if I had to, then I'm just driving around someone else's car.

You don't need an SA licence either to get a car registered in your name in SA, just a 'client number', which ServiceSA can set up with sufficient proof of an SA residential address.

That said, registration/CTP is quite a bit cheaper in Victoria than SA (~$650 per year compared to ~$800 per year for a 6cyl vehicle). $150 extra per year is chump change though considering the lack of bureaucracy here.

      Bwahahaha.

I had my WA rego car in Vic for at least 6 months… after having it in NSW for a year before that. The WA licensing department were kind enough to send my papers to my "holiday" address over East, twice, even though I had friends lined up in Perth to FWD the papers if I needed to register my car at their WA address.

Pretty good deal considering I had only been in WA for 3 months in the first place… and the car would never have passed rego in an Eastern state :-D

  • "Roadworthy Certificate $19"

reminds me of that "Free Wheel Alignment" docket my mate got last year.

He went to pick up the car 1 hour later and the Mechanic had it up on the host and said, you need New Bushes, lower control arm, Shocks (…then you qualify for a Free Wheel Alignment).

    Car was 4 years old.

    • Geez a bit of BS there! I was tempted by this offer for the freebie Corolla I got given to me, but at the same time just thought geez these guys are gunna be more picky than a sore behind.

  • Something is wrong here because VIC roads charges the car dealership $50 I think per RWC; Im not sure how they can afford to lose $40 per car without tacking something on top. (scoopon profits is half so the car dealer is only getting $10)

  • Hard to believe they do all the checks required (these are not just visual) for $19-.
Clearly they want to pick up on the "repairs".
