Paid $30 by taking advantage of the Trade 2, Get it Free promo at EB Games.

Can not remember what I used specifically to trade in (probably Warhammer Age of Sigma: Rise of Ruins), but have a peep at JBs 2 for $30 games. Double check with EB over the phone if the games that you're planning to trade have over a $10 trade value each.

Tip: Some games that are part of the 2 for $30 promo disappear from JBs website when stock runs low. Worth it to have a peep in-store and see what bargains you can uncover.

Does this work for recently released games? Seems too good to be true

      • The EB trade deals normally end 7 days after the official release date (i.e. 23/01/25 for Donkey Kong trade deal). It's a very good promo, the only real hassle is finding games at JB that are eligible to trade.

    • Which games

      • Eligible games change frequently as EB Games updates their trade values. Eligible games will need to be a PS5/XSX/Switch game with a current trade value of at least $10 each.

Games that I used previously (which was maybe 2-3 months ago) were Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Rise of Ruins (PS5/XSX), Thymesia (PS5), Trepang2 (PS5, XSX) and Walking Dead Destinies (PS5). All those games were under JB's 2 for $30 promo at the time of my purchase, but were quite difficult to find (most stores I visited had a maximum of 1 copy left in each game)

Please do not blindly follow what I have previously used without double checking with EB, as they may not be eligible anymore.

  • Good news is that Switch 2 can also use this

    • Is this game cartridge different to the other switch cartridges? Or it's more software related than hardware?

      • +2

Same size cartridge. The annoucements says backwards compatibility is a go this time around, with some exceptions they'll announce later. That's probably the games that had accessories like the RC kart game.

Finished on Wii, playing again now on Switch.

Remembering why I didn't vibe with this, the controls don't work for me, DK lumbers slowly left and right and only picks up speed if you roll into a jump, which, one, you can only trigger the roll once you've lurched into a walk for a beat so it's still sluggish, and two, you go flying into the side of the slightly too close-up screen and whatever perils of enemy or environment awaits you.

Completing the accomplishments for each level requires brutal time trialling, and undeclared times for "shiny" golds that are faster than golds, if you can even get close or are just lucky enough to qualify for bronzes, especially with the aforementioned controls.

This Switch port also has unforgiveably long loading times, especially when popping in-and-out to mop up the collectibles or you're time trialling. The graphical quality is really fuzzy, it does look like a game from two generations ago, and I'd hope for so much more in at least that department for a game that's only ostensible difference is the HD.

But hey, it is a good game, very creative platforming and level ideas from one world to the next, and good art design.

Okay then it wasn't just me finding the roll jumping finicky. The game otherwise feels and plays just like tropical freeze, but with better music. It's crazy that dkc2 remains the franchise's uncontested peak

      • Yeah but that was a hell of a peak. Those Rare employees of the mid-90s are all-time greats. Tropical Freeze was great IMO, just let down by it's controls.

After playing Celeste, I can't believe how unresponsive switch dk games feel.

      • whoa hang on, what about donkey kong jungle beat (specifically on wii that didn't let you use the bongo controls)???

Did two levels last night, playing handheld.

Thought visually it was ok on the OLED display. Wasn’t paying close attention but didn’t seem too fuzzy. Also not planning on doing the time trials necessarily as I’m not sure I have the patience to try and memorise levels as that will probably require.

But yeah, the controls in this game do annoy me and it’s all down to that roll. Really dislike how a roll jump propels you so rapidly across the screen. It was such an important mechanic in the original trilogy and you maintained control while doing it where I feel like the same move here sends you into an uncontrolled launch. But, I’m only 2 levels I. I remember also disliking Tropical Freezes controls but still saw that game through to completion. Not sure I ever loved how it controlled but I learnt to tolerate it. Been a while since I played that one but.

Certainly feels different coming from Mario Wonder or Astrobot (sure, that’s a 3D game but it shares Mario’s nimbleness in how it plays).

      • I might wait and see if some smart people fix the controls with a mod before playing again. Disappointing

  • the OG on wii 4k with texture packs look better than switch version.

Nintendo are god-tier at making you pay for the same thing over and over again.

      • +1

Why can't the dogs just make a new DK game instead of gold farming us

      • And Apple.

  • Is there a discount if I already only this on Wii?

    • +3

Yeah: -120% discount for each new console.

  • Shame no preorder bonuses anywhere

  • Good price, decent game? Mixed reviews saying it's a 2011 game or something..

Shouldn't this be called "Donkey Kong Country Returns Returns"??

    • Technically Donkey Kong Country Returns Returns Returns
