I've never churned credit cards before and wanted to get into it now since we've got some trips coming up that we can buy things with. I was thinking of going for a 100k velocity card but this seems even better! It seems pretty straightforward to churn the cards, but is there anything I need to know about from people that have done it before?

    • +3

i've read this comment before somewhere….

    • +1

is there anything I need to know about from people that have done it before?

      ○ It affects your credit rating

      ○ All these bonus offers are for new customers. Different providers have different criteria for being a "new customer", eg. if you had AMEX before, you have to wait minimum 18 months to get these bonus offers again.
St. George require 24 months now, to qualify as a 'new customer', so you have to time all of your churns well enough, to keep getting these kinds of deals.

      ○ Some banks don't approve applications, if they 'sense' you're a churner.

      • +2

        It affects your credit rating

Not as bad as in US. You only worry if about to get a big loan (house , car etc).

Some banks don't approve applications, if they 'sense' you're a churner.

Yes, I would be cautious with this - previously didn't care much, but after 3 rejections last year, I'm now a bit more conservative with my choose of credit cards.

        • +1

Which banks did you find were likely to reject you for churning?

          • @User0001: I've been recently struggling with getting approved for cards run by Citi group (NAB): Citi, Virgin, Suncorp etc; and AmEx

      • Excellent, that's all good to know! Thanks for the heads up! We'll keep an eye out for the eligibility criteria to make sure we get the most of it!

      • Can I be a "new" customer if I have been an additional card holder of Amex Platinum? No other Amex card holding in the past 18 months.

  • Applied and received wait 5-10 business days notice. So declined?

    • call them, sometimes just ID check

    • and how many have you churned in last 1 year?

    • I got the same response. Not sure what to make of it.

Usually, for other card applications I've been asked to upload pay slips for income proof but wasn't asked to provide any income proof here.

      • did they approve

        • Not yet. Do I wait 5 - 10 business days or call them?

          • @dealhunter52: i'd call if nothing heard by mid day

            • @ozbargainerlife1: I was thinking of calling them tomorrow. Is there a reason to call them early?

            • @ozbargainerlife1: Got rejected :-( .

              • @dealhunter52: whats ur churn history

                • @ozbargainerlife1: 3 credit cards in past 12 months.

                  • @dealhunter52: have you been rejected by amex in last 12 months

                  • @dealhunter52: one of my friends just approved, 1 card in last 12 monnths

                    • @ozbargainerlife1: Seem pretty random tbh. This person had 7 rejections in 2 years + 2-3 churns in past year but still got approved.

                      • @dealhunter52: There is some element of randomness… but even the same person, with the same details, is not actually in the same position after 2 years. They've had 24 periods of bill payments added to their record, they've had 2 years added to their job stay, inflation has gone up, maybe part of their mortgage has been paid off, etc.

Many people who's luck changes, may simply just be in a different position than they were 2 years ago whether they realize it or not. And since you don't share their same history with regards to credit/employment/income/mortgage/dependents, etc.. looking for a pattern isn't really going to help you much.

So don't worry about other people's experiences! Just stick to your own applications for cards you think you can afford, and if you get rejected, wait a little while next time, consider a lower credit limit, or both.

    Only shows 100,000?

    • Offer says 120,000 for me

    • try icognito? works fine for me

      • +1

Seems switching on VPN and incognito mode was able to display the 120,000

    • Same, only 100,000 pts

    • So this is weird - for me it shows 100k, I tried incognito and still 100k, so I tried a different browser incognito and still 100k. Then I try on a different computer that's got a vpn on it, and the same link shows me 120k all of a sudden. Definitely a weird one

    • I had to use a VPN to get the 120,000. I tried multiple browsers, private browsing, cleared history, etc and only 100,000. VPN and I instantly got 120,000.

I think they removed the two complementary entries to the Centurion Lounge access with this card.

    • Good pick up, I missed that

    • thanks updated

      • +1

Where did you copy this description from? It’s all wrong, the VA lounge passes are also no longer included and instead it’s ongoing VA lounge access for one person

        • +1

I think it's still both included.

          Virgin Australia Lounge Access

Your American Express Velocity Platinum Card gives you access to Virgin Australia lounges at select domestic airports, every time you fly Virgin Australia domestically. Slip away from the crowds, sample an array of complimentary food and beverages, and take a load off before you take off. Enrolment in the VA Lounge Access6 benefit required.

2 Virgin Australia Guest Lounge Passes

Each Membership year receive 2 complimentary Virgin Australia Guest Lounge Passes10 to treat friends or family to VA Lounge access, when travelling with you on a domestic Virgin Australia flight.

    • yes this is removed starting april this year. Also annual fee has increased from last years deal

  • +2

As much as I loved this card I found the return flight hard to redeem.

Usually only has the early morning or late night flight times available. You're basically choosing from the least popular fares. Further out you search the better the availability.

  • +4

So like I've been rejected by AMEX about 7 times in the last 2 years. And I churned through like 2-3 cards this year. And I was just instantly approved today for this card. What changed?

    • Nice one! Did you apply for the Amex Qantas one recently as well?

      • +3

Nope. Just this one today. I don't apply for AMEX because I usually get rejected instantly and it hits my credit. So I am surprised to say the least.

EDIT: My credit score is significantly lower compared to when I applied the first few times.

        • +2

Haha that’s so bizarre. I’ve been constantly rejected by Amex too, despite being approved for every other credit card. Churn through 3-4 cards per year.. did you do anything different in this application?

          • +1

@Crowing: Same here. Easy to get others at higher limits but not amex. Regular card churner too.

          • @Crowing: Nothing different. Same details as always.

    • +1

It'll be almost impossible to get approved for any card with 7 recent failed applications and 3 new cards in the past 12 months - you would expect an instant decline with a credit history like that.

      • +1

Yep, I thought the same. From 2023-2024 6-7 rejections by AMEX. I still have 2 credit cards outside of AMEX open as well.

    • how many did you churn in last 12 months and do you currently hold a card?

      • +1

2-3 in last 12 months. I don't hold any AMEX. But I hold other banks.

        • +2

          2023-2024 6-7 rejections

Wow they must've finally approved you simply out of exhaustion lol

          2-3 in last 12 months

What about any changes in income? 2-3 cards doesn't sound like much of a churn at all, a lot of people literally hold that many at the same time long term.

          • @vawiyoci: Yeah probably :) That's good for me. Changes in income nothing since my last rejection. churned 2-3 cards in 12 months whilst holding 2. Just because I've exhausted all credit cards and they started moving to 18 months rather than 12.

            • @Pikaloo:

they started moving to 18 months rather than 12.

Brace yourself some banks (Westpac) increased to 24 months now…

    • Did you choose your own credit or let Amex decide?

      • good question, I choose to let them decide and they approved me this time, gave me $20k limit, was denied about 5 months ago applying for a different American Express card, but i think I choose lowest limit then. hard to say if that helped or not

      • I let AMEX choose for me and they went crazy….I thought they'd give me a 10k credit max if I was even approved given the amount of credit I have with other companies.

  • -1

I feel like for most people 275k Amex platinum is better. If you add simple to use benefits up it exceeds this value. 137k Qantas/virgin points. 200+200 local +overseas food voucher. You can get twice once you roll over to the new year as in 1st Jan. $450 Qantas voucher( so easy to use and usually spend more for a couple return flights anyway) $250-300 free hotel night via Accor membership . Plus priority pass+unlimited centurion+ virgin business lounge when flying virgin. Plus being able to earn MR points not only virgin. The difference is only $1050 so if you are planning an overseas trip or fly a lot I’d get the platinum…

    • +1

      Haha. Only $1050!

    • +2

$1450 annual fee is a tough pill to swallow though, even with all the benefits.

    • +1

Where is the 275k points offer? As I can only see 200k bonus rewards points offer on the Amex website?
Do you have a link for that offer?

      • Some people have it as a referral offer - i sadly don’t

Despite the annual fee - for 275k if you’re regular traveller it’s potentially a great deal

  • +1

So could I buy say a PC with this and pay it off straight away and that counts as my 3k spend ?

    • +1

      yes

    • +4

You may as well take advantage of the 55 day interest free period instead of paying off immediately.

  • This seems like a better deal than the Qantas Ultimate 100k points offering

    • +2

Better points offering but you’re locked into $440 fee with return flight on virgin. With the Qantas Amex there’s the loophole crediting the flight voucher back

      • +2

        Loophole…. tell me more… 😊

        • Apparently if you book a flexible rate (hotel or flight), they refund you in money thus getting cash for your credit…… Not tried it yet so don’t take that as gospel

  • I applied last week but it was only 100,000 then :(
    Probably rejected anyway.

  • How come we have members without American express card ? Offer not available if you have held an American Express-issued card in the past 18 months.

Most of us would be excluded

  • I can't seem to do the application - throws an error when going past the first information screen. Tried different browsers etc. Maybe they dislike me :p

  • Is this better than Velocity Flyer Card in value?

  • Does ATO payments considered as eligible payments for minimum spend for these cards, anyone received points before by Paying to ATO ?

    • You'll see the earning rate of government bodies if click on the promo link.

    • I don't think it will count towards minimum spend, but you can change that and get more Velocity points. See: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/887701

Buy these only when they are fee free or the rare case of 10% off. Otherwise, not worth it. Then use these cards (immediately!) to pay the ATO. 10K in ATO payments will give 12.5K Velocity points. There's no fee using these prepaid mastercards with the ATO (as of a month ago). This and the free flight is what makes the Velocity Platinum card very well worth it for me.

      • Thanks folks, applied my first Amex credit card.

    • I called them today and they said yes

      • Did you get the "wait for 5-10 business days" thing after submission? I got the same last night and not sure if that means a declinal.

  • note: this card recently changed to unlimited virgin lounge access and no more Centurion lounge. please check and confirm

  • Churning noob here. Is this kind of deal only worth it if you plan on redeeming points for flights?
The $440 annual fee seems to kill it for redeeming gift cards with the points.

    • +1

Probably. Using Velocity points for gift cards is definitely less value per point than redeeming for flights. Far less, to be honest. If your intention is finding a card to get gift cards, I don't think this or any other velocity/qantas card is the right fit.
There are other cards that are better for gift cards I think. Citi Premier/Prestige could be good value, and those points can be converted to Flybuys, and hence $ of your groceries.

      • Far less, to be honest

Qantas/Virgin would love it if everyone used up their points on gift cards and toasters etc. Already heading that way when people do it out of frustration from not being able to find the seats they want.

  • redeem for GC or flights would be better for this card?

    • +2

See above. Terrible for GC. Absolutely terrible. Would be true most likely of any airline-program credit card I think.

  • How many points would I receive as a new applicant via the refferal link?

When I click the link, the bonus amount is 100k as opposed to heading to AMEX myself and being offered 120k.

    • Try incognito

      • Sorry, I meant how many points do I get for being referred? Or do you only receive as someone referring others?

        • Sometimes same as public offering. Sometimes more. I don’t have this card so can’t tell you what is being offered as a referral

  • +1

Applied and approved the next day, never been approved for the platinum card before so was pleasantly surprised, thankyou OP! Got 120,000 instead of 100,000 this way!
