I had a "free' 1L icecream tub, thanks to whoever at Coles felt like it. It randomly popped up in my receipt last week. Picked it up today.

    • when you get these "free items" after a shop, does anything come up on the payment screen to tell you, or is it on the bottom of the receipt?

      • It was the first time for me. I cant recall if it came up on my screen (most likely did), but it definitely was there on the top of the receipt.

Imagine paying $12 for 1 litre of icecream !!!

    • +5

Haagan-Dasz is $14.80/L when it's half price, and people apparently buy it

    • +2

its called living RICHEEE (pronounced Reeeshh) :D lol…. and its ok - those people don't lurk on OzBargains…

    • +5

If you walk down the street on a hot day you’ll see huge lines of people paying $6-7 for one scoop of ice cream at places like Messina, Piccolina, Pidapipo

      • we have a Messina store in Penrith Westfield and I rarely see anyone in there. I don't know how they keep this one open

    • +1

Yes, it seems just the other day full price was $6.

And I am not old thank you!

  • which is the best choc variety? Choc brownie custard?. Belgian? choc chip?

    • Muchmore salted caramel 2L is my fav when it is at half price.

    • +4

It's up to you! But my favourite is the the chocolate brownie custard.

    • Choc Brownie Custard is definitely good!

  • +4

Well this was on sale at Coles last week also for half price, so as per ongoing collusion it was always gonna now be on sale at Woolies.

    • dont the suppliers usually set the price and time of the promotions, not the supermarket?

      • +4

Hahaha, no. Or at least, maybe in an official "they signed the paperwork" kind of way. They'll do what Coles and Woolies tell them to do since they hold all the power in the duopoly we have in Aus. This has been well documented in recent years culminating in a Four Corners special on this very topic early in 2024. It was a good watch and i'd recommend it to all.

Correct, we need someone to implement a government efficiency program as they have in the USA. The ACCC have had decades to deal with this problem, seriously, what do they all do? Nothing. Money wasted.

          • +1

@FXx: A government efficiency program to control private companies? Sounds like commie talk. Nice!

            • @NatoTomato: I didn't make my point clear enough, clearly. The ACCC's irresponsibility has led to the supermarket duopoly, which itself is a significant reason for higher prices.
When the Libs get back in, the ACCC should be made to do their job or scrapped altogether.

    • It’s like they rotate between Colesworths on a wide range of goods. I think you will find it is the supplier.

  • +6

How on earth can they justify the full price.

If you like chocloate or ice cream go to aldi.

Its so much cheaper and so much better.

    • But they dont have varieties. I love their kapiti vanilla ice cream.

      • Kapiti ice cream is the bomb and at only $8.

    • +2

Aldi chocolate is the best! The chocolate almonds, hazelnut pralines and their aero mint blocks are my favs!

Meanwhile the other day i bought ONE block of cadbury for $4.20 that was 50% off. So the usual price is $8.40? For one standard block of Cadbury which is now only 160 grams or some shit? What the heck???

  • wish they would bring back the one with cherry swirl and cashews…..don't care about the cashews, just the choc with the cherry swirl

When will connoisseur get their act together and bring out the much awaited, much anticipated, much needed pistachio flavour?

I accidentally found out that 1L Peanut Butter Ice Cream actually weighs 730g(confirmed by looking at the number of servings/weight on the package). Has this always been an issue? Isn't it fraud to claim weight to be 1L?

    • +9

1 litre of ice cream doesnt necessarily weigh 1 kg. How is it fraud if its a litre?

    • 1L of ice cream ≠ 1kg…it’s not as dense as water.
Especially not when they pump enough air through the ice cream to get to 1L. That is a pretty big discrepancy, which makes sense when you notice the quality drops.

      • +1

Thanks - that makes sense. In my ignorance I assumed that Ice Cream would be measured like candy - clearly that is not the case because ice cream is not as dense.

      • Connoisseur Vanilla is the best. 940g @ $6 and it tastes good

  • Yes, and it's just over half a kilometre.

  • +7

According to my calculus, the weight of 1L of this 'premium' ice cream is only 4 minutes, and when the pumped-in air is shovelled out it weighs 5 watts. As a comparison, the Aldi ice cream weighs 3 pawns. I blame the ACDC because they have had decathlons to break up the Colesworths oligarchy.

    • +2

OK, I deserve it. However, I don't think AC/DC (the rock band) would be helpful in this situation :)

    • That makes no sense at all, take an upvote. At least you're not trying to use litres as a unit of measurement for weight..

      • +2

Identify all the satirical items in that comment for a chance to win 40 decibels of ice cream.

  • Does anyone here use the half price app? No need for these posts. It just shows you what's half price at all times. Can select Coles and Woolies or just which ever one your at.

I'm trying to make it a thing this year that I only by 1/2 price items other than the basics.

It's actually quite fun making it work.

    • I used to have this but I must have deleted it for some reason.

The categories are a bit messed up. Frozen barramundi and soap in the pantry tab. Chorizo and ravioli under the dairy tab? :)

  • +5

I've got an Ozbargain-er issue with icecream and the way it's packaged as volume and not weight. My care factor around this is significant! The amount of air in icecream is disgusting, as is people's lackadaisical approach to icecream purchasing :)

    2L of Peter's vanilla icecream weighs 920g (360g/L).
1L of Connoisseur vanilla weighs 920g.

Both owned by Peter's. The recipes are not quite the same. As a cafe owner using scales to portion icecream for shakes, they are nearly indistinguishable in a shake.

Connoisseur's other flavoured ranges are around the 600g/L.

They are quite different in a bowl to eat though (obv)

TL:DR Connoisseur vanilla is regularly better value than Peter's.

    • +2

Wow, that's amazing facts, good to know, thank you!

  • +2

Tried the Cookies & Cream icecrea. It was shit. Never again.

Why is so much America ice cream being sold everywhere?

    • Yeah, that flavour is fairly average.

Not sure about American icecream. Ben & Jerry's has been in Australia for a while.

Buy Connoisseur instead… It's an Australian brand made in Victoria.

    • +1

That's crazy talk, Cookies and Cream is top shelf!

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/660554

  • When did these go on sale? I bought 4 last night (11/02/25) thinking that they were on sale but when I checked my credit card I was slugged $50 (also bought some milk). I called my local store today and they said the promotion only started today? Pretty salty (and not the caramel kind) about buying 4 of these at full price…

    • Woolworths/Coles catalogue specials always starts Wednesday.

      • Sigh, thanks. I'll promptly hand in my ozbargain card.

        • -2

Please hand in your drivers license instead, since apparently you can't read numbers? Or do you generally shop by just throwing money at things?

          • @Ezekiel2320: Idiotic comment but I'll oblige. The tubs had been moved into a clearance section of the freezer and there were no accompanying price tags.

            • @gyrex: Wow I could almost see someone tap tap tapping their way through adding to cart and checkout on a small phone screen, but you're saying stood there in real life, scanned each ice cream four times slowly and methodically at the self checkout, plus milk, and then confirmed a payment for $50 and at no point ever noticed? Thus confirming my original point. I don't think I'd be calling others idiotic if I were in your position

    • +1

Can you return it? Probably not cos it's dairy.

      • Yeh, I called this morning and they said no. I'll just take the loss.

        • +2

Or buy more now to make up for it.

  • been buying this regularly for months @ "1/2 price" $6… the honey ones, the jam donut & the matcha are the bizz.

  • Pic's is my partner's and my favourite peanut butter, we've been drizzling it over vanilla ice cream for a delicious evening dessert most days (also found Blue Ribbon's vegan ice cream > dairy ice cream!).
