Even if they were true to their name they wouldn't be much fun. Hover means to remain in one spot while in the air, therefore a hoverboard would be a board that floats in the air in one spot without moving in any direction. In this case the item should be known as a hover-bored, as that's what you'll be when riding on it. Marty Mcfly will disagree.
You might be talking about levitation? Which implies up and down. Hover very definitely includes moving sideways - as evidenced by the very real hovercraft.
Maybe you should buy a dictionary or learn how to use Google to find the meaning of words?
