Bought this set previously from Peters of Kensington and very happy with it. This is the same price but includes delivery in metro for free. I also got a pop up $10 voucher but I didn’t read the conditions before it went away so might be even cheaper.

Some cashback options worth looking at too.

This deal has now become available again.

  • ordered. wonder how does it compare to the Ikea heavy pan in terms of quality. best pan ever owned.

  • Do they stack well for putting them away?

I have mine in a pull our drawer. You will need to make allowance for the frying pan handle.

      • Cheers!

      • +8

Sheesh your kitchen looks super commerical

        • +12

We did a warehouse conversion 30 years ago and leant into it. We have super deep benches to sit the appliances on, we pull them forward for use. We got stainless steel bench tops with a dual set in sink so stuff just gets swiped into the sink without catching.

Not commercial grade kitchen but it does work well for us.

        • About to say so… love the industrial style

      • How hot do the handles get while cooking? I've not had good experiences with steel handles.

        • The handles seem to be fine but we mainly use in induction mode.

        • +1

I use mine daily (I have a medium size one) and I’ve never had problems with handle heat. I have heard that you can’t run them through the dishwasher though because they can get water in the handle if you do this. But I’ve never tried.

          • @saintpat: I don’t run them through the dishwasher because I’m worried how it will affect the finish. My first pressure cooker was aluminium and I put that in the dishwasher. Over time it removed most of the outer layer.

Previous deal thread at the same price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/888093

    My commment from last thread

"I've got a set of these i've been beating on for 15 years. Still look brand new. These + a well seasoned cast iron skillet can cover you for life."

I have the large frypan, the 12L stockpot and 3 saucepans. There is only 1 overlap in my set with this

    Thanks OP

edit: the $10 off coupon works for this. $169 nice.

Does the line at the bottom indicate they are stainless steel top with aluminium bottom?

Or are they fully clad, the line is just how they are made?

"Professional quality 18/10 heavy duty stainless steel- for maximum durability" doesn't tell the construction, or deliberately ambiguous.

    • +1

18/10 is usually code for mediocre make. If you don't abuse it, it'll probably last a long time though. By that I mean, if you just cook normally and not subject it to great changes in temperature and throwing it around.

    • Doing a bit of Googling
      ScanPan doesn’t say but

      “Stainless steel
Stainless steel is a popular choice for cookware because it's strong, hard and non-corrosive. It's not the best conductor of heat, so it's often combined with aluminium in multi-layered bases.”

      https://store-9w1233b37f.mybigcommerce.com/content/SS_User_G…

    • +3

Looks like a disc base and not clad in the sidewalls. Arguably better for induction as you don't have inefficient gas flames creeping over the sides, and sucking out heat.

      • Probably doesn't matter for gas cooktop if the fame can hit the sides.

For electric cooktop where heat only comes from the bottom fully clad may make a difference.

    • +2

The description says it has an "impact-bonded base", which makes clear that it is disc-bottomed, not fully clad.

      • What is the difference between "impact-bonded" and "fully clad"? I guess I will have to do some googling.

        • "Fully clad" means that the inner core of aluminium (which is a better thermal conductor, meaning the cooking vessel heats up more quickly) goes all the way up the sides

They don't create the entire pot out of aluminium because it's quite a soft metal compared to an alloy like stainless steel, can corrode more readily, and its high thermal conductivity also means it loses heat more quickly and can introduce hot spots when using certain burners/heating elements. This is why they surround the aluminium core with stainless steel, for its easier maintenance and to add more thermal capacity (meaning a more consistent temperature across the whole cooking vessel)

Not sure what "impact bonded" means, aside from it likely being a manufacturing technique to fuse the two metals together using a high force impact. As you can imagine, it would be much harder to manufacture a fully clad cooking vessel like this (if not impossible). This leads Peter to assume it is disc-bottomed, which I've never heard it referred to as, but it is a funny name I like

Covering my disc-bottom (ass): I did no Googling and parts of this could be wrong, I was inferring a lot from my pre-existing knowledge of fully clad pans/pots

My last scanpan purchase was a dud

    • +3

This has ten years warranty. It depends on what you bought and why it was a dud.

      • +6

        Bro didn't provide any explanation

        • I purchased a set of four knives on catch for $14. They were blunt. They couldn’t cut a potato.

          • +3

@Wiadro: Only a potato would do something like that and expect them to be sharp.

            • +4

@ifreddo: I agree, but I’m more of a sweet potato

          • +2

@Wiadro: The Opposition leader is safe then.

          • @Wiadro: Paying $3.50/knife and expecting them to be able to cut anything is just folly.

There are a lot of brands like Scanpan, Tefal, etc that make a wide range of products for different markets. Their Catch/Supermarket end of the line is garbage, trading only on their brand name, but they also sell high quality stuff at the upper end of their offerings.

    • Depends on which line you bought

  • +2

    10% cashback on topcashback.

  • +1

This or impact? I like impact series handle. Bought these yesterday https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/product/scanpan-impact-7…

    • They're similar levels of construction and quality and the set you got has additional stuff in it, so I think you're pretty good there.

    • Defo this

  • +1

Does the frying pan comes with Lid? Or any of the saucepan lid will fit?

    • You can use the biggest lid for the pan.

  • +1

Is it worth paying a bit more for this 7 piece set?https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/895245

    • +1

      No

    • +1

I have the same set and worth it just for the largest pan

  • Does anyone know how Scanpan stainless steel cookware compares to Cuisinart stainless steel cookware?

  • +2

Anyone getting their address denied for shipping? My address is middle-of-Sydney af, but saying shipping not available. It did say delivery available when I first got to the site and added it to cart, but I'm now seeing delivery not available. Maybe it all sold out as I was about to pay? Ah well. Might check in the morning.

  • +2

Out of stock? Can't select a shipping address

  • Do you use more oil in S/S than on non-stick? Ozbargainer's view on teflon/ceramic?

    • +5

Yes yiu have to use oil for SS. But I usually only use a teaspoon or so. For eggs I use half teaspoon of margarine instead as it makes the eggs slide around the pan.

I threw away all my non stick stuff and just use SS now. As long as you heat up the pan first, apply the oil until it smokes then you really won't have much issue. Saying that, throwing something cold on, like a steak straight from the fridge, will definitely stick. It's best to let them get to room temp and once cooking, the steak will lift off once it has seared.

      • Tried doing pancakes and omelettes with previous SS frypan and stuck like stink. Haven’t tried with the current from this set because we have a ScanPan techniq non stick frypan which works really well. However, I should try it.

        • I have a small (14cm?) SS fry pan from Scanpan and it works alright. I normally heat it up for 4-5 min at medium heat before putting oil and cooking.

        • I only use the IKEA 365 s/s pans so not sure how much difference more expensive pans make. But pancakes only go well when using butter, not oil on a medium/high heat.

I saw from product reviews that some users reported that the handles can trap water inside, especially after washing. This happens because the hollow handle design allows water to seep in through small openings, making it difficult to fully dry.
Has anyone experienced this? If so, how do you avoid this? Thanks

    • +1

Interesting. I'll keep an eye out for that issue when mine arrive 😬

    • +1

Haven’t had this issue but we hand wash our pots and pans and generally keep the handles out of the water. Maybe tip the pan upside down to allow the handle to drain off.

    • +1

I've had this happen a few times in the dishwasher. Its really not a big deal

  • They have stock in a store in my state, but they won't do shipping to me, click and collect only.

  • Are they heavy ?

    • I own a large saute pan (28cm i think?) with a lid and yes they are pretty weighty

      • Thanks, I will pass then

  • Fyai, not deliverable to nsw, bugger
and couldn't find it in pok, op can you give me the link

  • No longer able to choose delivery. Click and collect only. Too bad quite far from me.

Edit - bought it, was planning to do a Geelong trip with the family anyway. Looks like long weekend is the perfect time to pick it up

    • If you are down Geelong way take the kids to Eastern beach.

  • +1

What a bugger, no delivery or stores in NSW.

  • I wonder if Minimax went “what is going on here?”.

    • Funny you say that…

I got a call from them as my purchase had been flagged as potential fraud. Lady said "we weirdly had this big run on them on Wednesday night" so i explained ozbargain haha.

      • I would love to be a fly on the wall when she reported that back.

  • Back in stock with delivery available, just ordered.
    Thanks OP
