Seems like a good price for this 12th gen top of the line chip for LGA 1700 socket, right before the microcode bug generations, so I picked one up and thought someone else might like one too. This is the "KS" special edition, with integrated graphics just in case your GPU blows up you can use your computer.

      it was a joke lol

If only there was some way of patching microcode…

In all seriousness, this is approaching 7800X3D and 7900X pricing out of China, and prices will sink back down here soon enough.

Intel vs AMD is irrelevant to the argument, this CPU should be left in the dust.

    • Some folks need an Intel system regardless of what the performance metrics are.

With some under volting, you can lower power usage considerably.

I myself am trying to price a system based around the 9800X3D but pricing at the moment is nuts, so waiting it out. Still chugging along with my 13600K under volted and yes no issues thus far in my two years of ownership in terms of crashing etc. Processor was happily undervolted from the start and doesn’t exceed the 1.5v vcore that seems to be the limit where degradation happens.

I have a 13600k, are we stuffed? I was thinking an i9-14900k but everyone seems to hate on them? Can't I just get a better PSU or something?

        • +1

LOL a negative vote for something that is true, ah classic OzBargain.

@moj3 not really, I don't think I ever read of a 13600k being degraded that it started crashing, but yes the 14900k had plenty of reports of crashing prior to the micro code updates.

If you undervolted the processor, it ran within spec and would not hit the required voltage for it to degrade.

@jlogic: Woops. Did i neg vote you? I didnt mean to. I pressed +1 and it went away. Apologies

        • +1

13600k should likely be ok, with 13900 or 14900 it would better to make sure it has the latest microcode and the latest MB bios, to essentially overclock the CPU less. Otherwise it would slow degrade with time. Mine 13900k becomes very unstable after about a year of use.

Where does my comment say don't buy Intel? This price point is also in reach of a Core 7 265K.

          Calm your farm @jasswolf

          No one is attacking you.

Just saying sometimes people just buy Intel cause it’s Intel regardless.

Not saying this a good deal or not.

@jlogic: My tone is at worst ambivalent, I'm good!

          • +1

@jlogic: also IntelMKL doesn't work well with AMD. I think OpenBLAS would help, but some softwares might use only IntelMKL.

I have a 13900K workstation, sometimes running simulations etc for days with full CPU load, no issues at all. I haven't even updated microcode for a long time. I use air cooling with PL2 253W with -0.075V offset undervolt. I upgraded from 5600x and this is great.

        • +2

I had 13900K failed, no overclocking since also used for workstation load. Certainly worth updating microcode / MB BIOS.

          • @DmytroP: oh! what happened ? any symptoms before hand.

    • +2

If some already have a compatible MB and would like to upgrade CPU, it may be a valid choice.

      • -2

Not at this price, and if they were on a DDR5 install they'd be better served making the upgrade to a weaker class of recent CPU.

        • It would involve the motherboard upgrade cost.
It's not a good CPU for new builds, but may be an ok choice for upgrades, especially with a more expensive motherboard or DDR4 systems.

          • -1

@DmytroP: LGA1700 covers 12th through to 14th gen, so probably not.

This is a recommendation for fear-mongering luddites.

            • -1

@jasswolf: You are right, it's a price of 14700F, essentially the same performance at the significantly lower power consumption.

Good price but shocking power usage.. NO gamer should be buying this CPU. Someone who needs the performance for a workstation but is fine with excessive CPU cooling needs i guess it maybe ok.
