      I don't like your vitriol.

That was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

        • +4

It was indeed, but it left a sour taste in my mouth!

          Scalding response.

          Very punny guys

      • You sir, are awesome.

    • I think the bigger question is why do you have so much acid.

      • why do you have so much acid.

To deal with people who ask too many questions. ಠ_ಠ

    • i don't need acid.. i just need to give it to a 3 yr old toddler.

will it still be "worth every penny" if i pay in AUD?

    • +12

      No

On the upside you can make an enemy out of Gerry Harvey by buying from an overseas store.

I was not just enlightened… I was turned on :)

  • How long do the batteries last as they are not the common type and are a bit pricey?

    • +2

They are rechargeable - 2 for $6.39 including charger here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/170880816785
If you look around on eBay, you should be able to get a better price / batteries with higher capacity (mAh).

I bought a 4Sevens Quark X AA2 (Cree XM-L LED, 2xAA battery) for about $40 last year (sold out before I could post to ozbargain though!).

I also got one of these for $9 [add battery + charger] (uses Cree XM-L LED and also has focus, 1x18650 battery). http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251195932072

Side by side, the brightness of each is on par with the other, if anything, the eBay cheapie is a bit brighter. The 4Sevens also has a bit of a yellow tinge compared to the eBay cheapie. The 4Sevens is bright in the center and dims toward the edges. The eBay cheapie is quite sharp around the edges (size adjustable by focus), but if you focus it too much, you get a square with lines which resembles the LED.

It looks like the CREE XM-L is brighter than the XP-G : http://www.ledgroupbuy.com/cree-model-comparison/

Personally, I'd go for the eBay cheapie, not only because it's cheaper in price but also as it doesn't feel any cheaper in build or brightness.

    • Thanks for the write up and comparison

  • These Fenix PD32 are about $61 on ebay with free delivery.

en'lightened' I see what you did there!

  • Sorry to ask, but how much is shipping?

  • If only it was a light saber… ;-) Given I only ever need a $5 torch around the house I guess I'll never get to experience the brightness of these more expensive torches.

  • +3

I'm going to have to vote this down, 315 lumens from a 18650 or 2 CR123A batteries is very low output.

For the kind of flashlight it should be using a XM-L LED with around 1000 lumens. But it is using a older XP-G, that might have been good in 2010 but now the average light less than half this price is 2-3 times brighter.

I'm sorry to the OP for the neg but I don't want anyone to get ripped off by paying this much and getting so little in return for their money.

    • +3

yes, but where is the deal for a fenix xm-L @ $51 or lower?

it's kind of pointless if we don't have any alternative references.

      • Being Fenix isn't the issue, there are a lot of equal or better quality flashlights than Fenix. Fenix are very overpriced and are not good value for money.

This is after all a bargain site/forum where people want bargins, not to pay extra money for a product that is 3 times less bright for up to 5 times the price as others.

Its the same as someone paying half a million Mercedes SMART car because it has a Mercedes badge, they think they are too elite to drive a 30k SMART car (those prices are made up but you get the idea).

        • +5

yes, and my point is, where is the alternative/better deal?

from a deals perspective, this is a decent deal for a fenix torch.

it's like neging apple products because I think they are expensive and a rip-off.. but I don't have any links/references to other deals of the same product that beats the original post?

and re:"equal or better quality", again, references, which brands, and models?
while I don't think fenix is best quality (they are not crap either), I don't think they are overpriced in general, in fact they are mostly priced at quite an 'entry level'.

So it's quite hard to see where you are coming from or what your point is.

post a link that is cheaper price or same price as this fenix torchlight, but has a better LED and a better build (easily verified in CPF forums), then people will know what you are talking about.

        • -1

          Thats funny.

The elitist community that spend $100s on Surefires to impress other members with a brand name even though they are surpassed by $12 SolarForce lights.

          That CPF?

Keep a eye on this and you should get your answers hopefully:

        • Didn't you see the deal for the ~$50 800+ lumen NiteCore EA4's the other day?

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/88063

Amazing value for a 800+ thrower light, better than this

    • +3

I think the 860 lumen Nitecore EA4 from the last deal was better. AA's too.

      • The EA4 is pretty much the best at the moment for AA's but in 18650s and CR123s and 26650s you can get around a 1000 ANSI lumens for $20-30.

Even some of the $10 eBay ones will be around 600 lumens or so but the quality/price point is around $20-30 for something really good but you have to know what you are looking for.

        -

Anyone buying a flashlight should consider signing up with "Budget Light Forum" and ask for recommendations in their price range and preferred batteries etc, there are 100s of friendly people that will be willing to help make sure you don't waste money. A good flashlight will last the rest of your life so it pays to do a little research.

      • +1

that's 4xAA though… there is a difference between a EDC torch and a torch you want to perv on possums ;)

unless you enjoy carrying a 4xAA torch in your pocket all day….. umm. nevermind. :p

        (the deals sold out though.)

    • There are other factors to take into account, it's not all about the lumens. While the XML pumps out more lumens for more or less the same power, the XPG's smaller die means the light is more concentrated and achieves longer throw with the same size head. You can make an XML throw further, but the light needs a bigger head and reflector to achieve this, which isnt practical for a light of this size. For the record, I have and use both XPGs and XMLs in torches of roughly this size (P60's mostly), and each serves a different purpose.

Fenix make quality torches, and this is a good price for this particular torch. The fact that this doesnt use an XML is a poor reason to neg.

      • +1

The price for it is neg worthy alone, one of my most used lights is also a XP-G but its only $16. Everything else isn't anything I didn't already know. The light its self I think is ok but only if it was $20 or less it may be noteworthy, I am all for value for money bargains but this is the opposite.

I did't neg because it doesn't have a XM-L (even though I mentioned it) but for the ridiculous price for what it is, all you have to do is read the title and description to see that the OP has no idea about flashlights and only posted it because he saw 53% off.

Anyone paying $50 for this is getting ripped off, if you think its a bargain then you you have more money than brains. But if you like paying premiums for no reason then go for it, if anyone wants to burn money that's their choice.

I wont post in this "deal" again as I am not here for a debate or argument, I just hope to have saved someone from a expensive and disappointing purchase.

        • Everything else isn't anything I didn't already know

I doubt that - you just compared a Fenix to a $16 cheapie you own, and said you would buy it only if it were $20 or less. No need to have a personal dig at the OP and his/her knowledge of flashlights.

If you just need a torch, then paying $50 for a Fenix may be a bit much, and you can go down the cheapie route. A quick search on Dealextreme should net you a passable, bright XML or XPG torch for under $20. Most of my 30+ torches are cheapies of some form, and many are great. None of the cheapies are nearly as well built as my Fenixs.

But this is beside the point - you haven't identified where you can get this particular torch for less, which is why your neg is silly.

  • How about 9 of these for the same price:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Adjustable-Focus-Zoom-In-Out-CREE…

At 300lm each that would be a total of 2700lm

    • Bit clunky holding 9 of them with only 2 hands. Probably need some duct tape.

      • Duct tape yes, one to each finger (would still leave one finger free to do whatever).

Thinking about getting some of these myself but he has only sold 3,980 of them.

        • You're still going to need 9 times as many batteries to run this thing. I don't think it's worth it.
