For what use? This is a high end GPU, are you high end gaming?
If you want it for work, get an Nvidea, better support and development.

      • Just left a long answer above that gets real specific. Any particular model you recommend based on my new comments above? REALLY appreciate the advice of people like yourself. Thank you!

If your wife isn't doing much gaming, I reckon going with Nvidia gpu. Maybe now it's different, but I know many applications work better with Nvidia driver than AMD. In any case, if you gonna spend ~ 1 grand for a gpu, better do research with your specific interest rather than taking general advice from Oz forum. We here tends to focus on gaming aspect and performance/price over anything else, therefore it may not match your needs.

      • Any further comments based on my long new post above? Appreciate your support very, very much.

        • Since you mentioned design primarily with Adobe and Blender, totally Nvidia gpu as others suggest. About the specific model, mostly depends on your budget. I think 70/70ti models for both 40xx and 50xx generations are good, 60/60Ti is kinda stingy (and your wife getting the 1st gpu after a long while), while 80/80s/80Ti are overpriced IMO.
That will cost you around ~800 AUD for 4070 to ~1300 for 5070Ti, these are brand new gpu price. Ofc you can get better deal with 2nd hand gpu, but since you aren't familiar with the market I only suggest to do so when u have friends/relatives that can help you with it.

          • @Masticccc: 1300 for 5070 ti? What fantasy movie is this! They are like $1700 atm!

            • @Daffan: Lol I just check from google shopping, there is a site call play-asia showing 1300-1400 AUD. Now I click on the link and it shows 2k instead….

              • @Masticccc: Yup.. It's real bad out here right now lol, 5080's are 2300!

As others have suggested, for productivity software the support for AMD hardware is catching up but is not supported in many cases.

This is a good source for information

I would suggest this would suit your needs better,

      • Legend! Thankyou! I'll read these links tonight no doubt it'll set us on the right path thank you so much.

        • Hey mate, not sure if you've pulled any triggers yet on any GPU. As others have mentioned, for professional workflows the nVidia camp is likely better suited (the Puget system webpages others posted have good info).

NVidia cards however have atrocious pricing especially when new (see here for an analysis on current Australian pricing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGx_T8zCkWc&t=538s), unfortunately our second hand market doesn't seem to be doing great pricing for NVIDIA GPUs too. Probably best compromise on price and performance would be looking at the last gen 4000 series cards (eg RTX 4070 super).

  • Don't know if a dual fan GPU will do well in a mini-ITX build. Definitely safer with a 3 fan.

    • +1

This card is thick tho, for sandwich case builds (i.e. FormD T1) this won't fit

  • +1

For those saying 2 fans isn't enough, the chips are running cool but mem isn't. You would be able to keep it cool, but maybe not quiet.

    • +1

2 x 100 mm fans is only 18% less fan area than 3 x 90 mm fans. And whilst they would have to work a little harder to cool the same amount, larger fans tend to run quieter for the same performance. So the difference isn't as big as it may seem (e.g. it's not a 33% drop in cooling).

      • Will it be able to be OC without running way too hot

        • That depends on a lot more than just the fans.
The cooler, the VRM's, and how well the entire package has been put together.
It's more than 3-slots thick, so it has a very beefy cooler.
But you should watch and read reviews on this model to confirm.

          • @Viper8: What about fan noise would a 2 fan be much more noisier than 3 fan?

            • @cromangon: Typically with 2 fan cards they're 100mm, whilst 3 fan cards are 90mm. Smller fans generally spin at higher rpm and make more noise. What's more important is the fan design and bearings used.

        • I will say all depends your luck, it’s all depends how much it can be undervolted. Fans and cooling helps, but chips is far more important.

One more generation on the 6800xt for me since there are no almost new games of interest to me that don't run exceedingly well already and the few that are of interest run terribly even on the 5090

    • +5

I have the 6800xt. I am waiting for the top end cards with 24Gb ram. Mine is still good for now :)

      • +2

Yeah, the 6800xt is still demolishing anything at 1440p that has had the least bit of effort put into optimisation. The new hotness like monhun wilds run like a three legged rocking horse with stutters on everything and thus hold no appeal for me. I will say that I have been shocked at how poor many games still are on radeon given the rdna2 backbone in both current gen consoles though.
I bought my card at 650 so the 9070xt isn't really pushing the needle on frames per dollar right now.

  • Waiting for the RX9060XT 16GB :)

  • I panicked and pulled the trigger now worried that I wont be able to overclock on dual fan?

    • Thermals don't really seem to be much of an issue with any of the 9070XT. Generally it's the 330-340W power limit that caps you. The main OC you do is a 100mv undervolt and a +10% power limit.

    • Caveat: I have a PowerColor Red Devil which is a bit of a chonker compared to the XFX Swift, but I feel fairly confident in saying the vast majority of people overclocking their 9070 XT are going to be power limited well before they're temperature limited.

The power slider is capped at +10% which gets my card up to about 360 W. From there, the only way to get the card to clock any higher is to undervolt.

I was just doing some really quick and dirty tests chasing some 3DMark scores for fun, and I was able to get over 20,300 in Port Royal with +10% to the power limit, a -125mV voltage offset, and 2810 MHz max frequency on the VRAM - a combination of settings I can basically guarantee would be unstable in games but worked fine for the benchmark run. GPU temperature never even looked like becoming a factor in any of the runs I did. I have a feeling that VRAM offset is actually too high and I'd probably get a higher score with a lower VRAM clock…

TechPowerUp's overclocking method probably makes the most sense for a longer term OC.

The price and the thumbnail made me think this was an entire tower PC.

    • same

  • Upgrading from a 3070ti worth it? Starting to struggle in some games, cyberpunk it'll probably continue to struggle

    • Try Lossless Scaling from Steam - It's on sale currently and works very well! Gave my 3080TI a lot more life

    • this hurts because I still have an RX 570 💔

If you're willing to spend the money the 9070xt is an amazing card and still a pretty substantial upgrade from a 3070ti (~50%?)

      • yeah but it'll definitely be held back from my cpu which is a i5 11600k, thats my dilemma and i cbf upgrading my mobo + ram + cpu on top as i cant particuraly justify it

        • bah, your CPU is more than fine for the 9070 XT.

          • @CrispyChrispy: even with ultrawide 1440p?

            • @cephh: Whether you're playing at a high resolution and/or on an ultrawide will depend on the GPU, not the CPU.

If you are experiencing stutters or low FPS in the games you currently play, use a tool like MSI Afterburner or another monitoring utility to diagnose the issue

              • @CrispyChrispy: Nah no stuttering at all, currently have my gpu undervolted just for better temps atm and performance doesn't seem to take that much of a hit. Cyberpunk is the only game that i've struggled with and honestly that's about it.

    • Cyberpunk is GPU demanding games, you can get few more fps with good CPU, that’s it. Especially 1440p ultrawide and 4K. There are games CPU demanding, but most newer games demand GPU more on 1440p ultrawide.

  • Managed to get one but I know this will be an expensive journey from now on haha the GPU is just the 1st piece of what will most likely end up being a whole new PC build. A much needed one too.

Now to wait for a decent CPU/Mobo deal 😁

  • Mine still hasn't shipped , Anyone else still waiting ?

    • still waiting and my order was placed before this post was even made.

    • my order shipped this morning, so i imagine everyone else who ordered is also on the way now

      • Mine had a label prepared so that's something .

        • same just got the email

      • once you receive it are you able to share temps and noise under load curious how this 2 fan model will perform. Thanks

  • anyone who ahs received it can please comment on the noise and temps?

  • @everyone has anybody got this delivered yet and can comment on thermals and noise?

    • +2

idles around 40C for me and under load it sits around 75ish, hasnt hit 80 yet so pretty happy temps-wise. As for noise, I would say its slightly louder than my old triple fan 3070ti but ymmv
