  • hmm tempted. my NAS capacity is 8.8TB from total of 10TB
of course i can delete some of the linux distros….

can we get those $10 off when using citi/nab cards, when purchasing from amazon US like this one?

    • +1

No CARD10 or NAB10 on anything outside Aus…

  • add:
All Seagate IronWolf and IronWolf Pro drives use Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) technology, not Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR). Seagate has stated they do not use SMR in these NAS-focused drives.

    • CMR is btter than SMR as far as I know.

  • Seagate unfortunately has one of the highest failure rate amongst hard drives according to backblaze. will purchase with caution.

not a single one of those models is Ironwolf. all EXOs and Barracudas. Can speak from anecdotal experience every Iron wolf I've owned has massively outlived any WD Reds (about 10 Ironwolfs over the last 6 years all still going strong vs 5 WD reds, 3 of which have failed.)

its crazy how much these are holding their value, been hoping to get 2 more for my NAS, i guess around 250 is the price it costs

    • +3

it's a shame how they're not dropping. I remember getting 4 of these for $220 each on prime day 2 years ago when I built my NAS.

  • I think people reported they arrive in just original packaging.

    Also 8tb Barracuda 5600rpm for $186.45

  • Sucks that none of the other capacities are on special. Would like to upgrade some of my 8TBs :(

and im gladly buy your 2nd hand 8TBs at bargain price :)

    I don’t need this. I’m at about 10TB of 24TB available.

    I don’t need this.

    Thanks OP! Got 2

    • wow im at 88% capacity and still holding

      • Ha, i held out. These drives really aren’t that good for the price.

  • +1

This or the WD redplus 8tb from earlier today? Seems like they're both quite similar, but wd red plus is quieter, and ironwood are a bit louder from higher spin speeds.

    • if you just need 1 go with WD if you need 4 and tight budget get this SGT

I bought it 5 years ago for the same price. Why these things doesn’t go cheaper in terms of storage/dollar.

  • Don't mind me thinking out aloud…

Man, I just bought 2 4TBs for this price, as one of my 4TB NAS drives died, then i bought a second as a hot spare….
    so 6x 4TB…

    5 in RAID 5, 1 hot spare.

issue is, I really couldn't wait as with the drive dying it became critical.

Now I only have 2 slots free on my 2x sas card and external enclosure (for the Gen 8 microserver), if only i hadn't gotten the hot spare, i could have gotten 3 of these, as a replacement for the 5x4TB, same capacity, then built another array with 5x8TB drives.

Guess I could remove the hot spare, or, there is always the onboard controller for microserver, and another external chassis, but i don't think the micro server could provide more power for more drives

Most of all would be a waste of 500 bux for the two 4TBs! too much of a waste…

I knew I should replaced the drives with 8TBs, then replaced the other 4s with 8s later down the track then just expand the raid array! ARGH, waste!

guess I'll just wait quite a few more years and replace them all with 16s when they come down and do a raid 6

    also, RAID IS NOT BACKUP!

    • i feel you man… i have 3x 4TB and 1x 3TB, no spare. now at 88% capacity
thiking to get 1x 8TB but there will be some space wasted (from synology raid calculator), minimum is i need to buy 2.
and thinking $500…. i decided to just delete some files and hold for another year

      • yeah, we could copy to an external drive, then replace the drives with larger ones and copy back, but then that's the old drives wasted. so i think im in the same position as you, just keep using my drives as is, should last quite a bit longer.

then in the future, wait for larger drives to come down in price, back up the entire array, then replacing it with a raid 6, (then adding the backup drive as a hot spare.)

hmm, though unsure if my rocketraid card handles drives that big even.

        • +1

No, mine is synology nas, it even supoort hot swap.
But to upgrade, i just pull one hdd and insert new hdd it will sort it out automatically, and i still can access all data albeit a little slower as the system re building the raid arrays.

  • Is it risky getting HDDs delivered from the US?

I wonder about potential damage on the way over, that may not be apparent at first

    • Hesitant too especially given how some of them get shipped, loose in a big box…

  • +1

Bought one in 2021 for $258, the price is still holding after all these years!

  • If you buy local, 2 = $558 - $45 redemption gift card = $513, but they're only a 5400 spin ST8000VN02
    Amazons ST8000VN04

Local, no wait, local warranty 8MB/s slower but use 1/2 the power, everything else I see on the specs sheet is the same.
Or shell out $90 more each and go Pro with $60 cash back.
