  • Hey how come when I click on this it shows me $308.36?

      "Sign in to Prime son."

        Durr. I'm an idiot thanks.

        • I didn't add it to the title sorry, added now

  • How is Amazons delivery? I've read some horror stories before.

    • Had maybe only 4 of 100+ of my family where the Amazon box was visibly damaged.

    • i bought seagate ironwolf's a few years back, they were delivered just in the seagate manufacturer box.. kind of concerning. drives are still running though.

    • +1

Terrible. Often times they will chuck it in a box without any padding.

  • WD Red or Seagate ironwolf?

    • I've committed to WD Red Plus 8TB in my 4 bay NAS, research told me they are quieter than the Seagate drives. I'm sure they both perform fine

Bought two to go along with my existing two which have served me well thus far in a mirror config. Will double my capacity with the two new drives and stick with the mirror configuration

  • I need the purple on special

  • +1

Need a local deal on these!

However last month they were $294ea, but an $80 Visa card via rebate if you bought 2 (making them $254ea)… gutted I missed out!

  • Im starting to look at 6tb drives to expand my home server. What's a good $/Tb to aim for, is 39.97/Tb decent? Haven't bought reds for a looong time.

You can certainly get cheaper if you look around for standard hard drives or refurbished enterprise drives. But I targeted WD Red Plus as they are designed for NAS use, and not as expensive or noisy as enterprise drives.

Check this out, handy website for getting an idea of prices: https://diskprices.com/?locale=au&condition=new,used&capacit…

May have accidentally bought 5 of the 22tb after missing the 24tb ironwolf for 725 this morning, still not sure how I will explain this to my wife

"Honey, I just saved us $400"

    • Damn I missed that one too!!

16TB for ~$480 seems good value

    • Added to post, nice one

      • You’ve linked the 16tb but it says 14tb in your title and then the $/tb calc is wrong too, should be $30

          But I'm doing my best

          (Fixed)

  • Is this drive okay for a normal hdd use in PC?

    • Would like to know this too

      • +1

A quick google seems to indicate it's fine, slight change in behaviour with error reporting. If it's cost effective I don't see why not

    • They'll work just fine. Slower rotational speed than some but assuming you'll use for secondary storage and not a system disk probably won't notice too much difference overall.

They are made to run 24/7 (if anything, the starting and stopping is going to wear them out quicker though), and have TLER enabled so they don't crap out the whole RAID when there is a read error but that won't matter for desktop use. (Used to be you could enable TLER on desktop drives, till they decided there was a market for it and stopped that.)

Itll work but you would be better off with a 7200rpm HDD in a desktop. I use these WD red in my NAS for media streaming, main reason is because they are much more quiet then a standard 7200rpm drive at the sacfrifice of read and write speeds. It doesnt bother me that stuff takes twice as long to transfer to and from the NAS, I can just go make a coffee or whatever. If Im watching movies and tv shows I dont want to be hearing clicks and clacks through the suspense scenes etc, I used to have 7200rpm drives in my NAS, I wont be doing that again.

if anyone got Amazon business then can get further ~10% discount. I got 2 10tb HDD for $311 each.

  • Bought last month (Shipped & sold by Computer Alliance), utilizing the 30% ($100 max.) amazon business prime discount and $80 cashback from WD.
    Final price ended up being
    309 x 2 = 618-100 = 518-80 = 438
    438/2 = $219 Each.

    $219/8 = $27.38/TB

Was express delivery from Computer Alliance to WA. Delivered in 2 business days.

Mine arrived today and for future reference arrived in good packaging from WD. Amazon box also had paper fill to stop the WD box from rattling around during shipping.
