What Would Be The Best Use of Monthly Woolworths 10% off Shop

Hi,

I'm not a regular Woolworths customer (I usually shop at Coles), but I have Woolworths Insurance that gives me 10% off one shop per month.

I'm trying to figure out how to use this discount effectively.

Since I'm a Coles fan and find their Flybuys offers (like "spend X for 4 weeks to get $50") more appealing, I can't switch to Woolworths entirely. However, I want to make the most of this monthly 10% discount.

Do you have any tips for maximizing this offer? For example, could buying gift cards or something similar help?

Thanks for sharing your ideas!

To make your life harder, you get one 10% off per month each at BigW and Woolies

    • I don't believe you get a 10% off at BIG W for having insurance or mobile. I think that only comes with Everyday Extra membership.

That's correct. I have Extra and Insurance so I get 2x 10% at Woolworths but only 1 at Big W.

        • One extra key difference…

The Everyday Extra 10% discount can be used for online delivery orders and in-store.

The Insurance 10% discount can ONLY be used in-store.

I'm not sure if the Big W 10% discount can be used online for deliveries as I've never tried.

Are there things that you buy at Coles that are also available at Woolies and have regular discount cycles. If so, stock up on 1 months worth of supplies when they are on special at Woolies.

For eg: Weetbix or Up & Go or chips, etc

The cheaper Coles branded tasty cheese is not too bad…if the New Zealand variety had not got so expensive, then that would be the option to shop around for.
For big families from OS near a Costco, they might want to consider this too.

Once per month do your Weekly shopping at Woolies?

  • +6

Best use would be a $500 shop as $50 is the maximum discount.

Some items appear to often be cheaper at Woolies, such as Lavazza Granulated Coffee.

Keep an eye for things that you like that are cheaper there and then also get the 10% off.

Only when on the Weekly Special

Tell someone inside the shop you have 10% off, and offer to split the benefit 5% each, ask for your 5% share in cash.

Have you ever succesfully done this? Or do most people think you're trying to scam them?

For example, could buying gift cards or something similar help?

Gift cards are excluded from the discount…..

    Exclusions
    Excluded from this offer are:

certain products, services, fees, including online purchases, any vouchers, Delivery Saver items, bag fee and crate service fee, internet cafes, purchases of liquor, smoking/tobacco products and accessories, newspapers, Woolworths Services, Gift Cards (including iTunes), mobile recharge, Everyday Mobile from Woolworths devices or plans, travel cards and tickets, Carpet Care, lottery products and Everyday Market from Woolworths orders or in conjunction with any other offers.

Don't fall into the trap of buying stuff that you don't really need, just to get a 10% discount.

    • or in conjunction with any other offers

Does that mean you can't stack with regular grocery items on special/discount?

      • +2

No, you can still get 10% off regular grocery items, even when those items are on special. That's pretty much what I used to do when I used to have a Woolworths Mobile (now Everyday Mobile) service and could get 10% off one shop each month.

      • +2

That's just a catch-all phrase they often use. To my knowledge the only other offer excluded is a 10% off from somewhere else (e.g. Everyday Extra), ie. you can't stack two 10% offs together.

    • No, markdowns.

For the Coles offers, are you spending above the minimum required spend each week? Try and get it as close as possible to the required spend, then save everything else to buy at Woolies. You may want to save your non-urgent items for Woolies as you only get one per month compared to one per week at Coles.
Also consider whether there's anything you like that Coles doesn't sell, but Woolies does.
For weeks where you don't have the 4 week promo, do consider which store has the better offer. Coles one-off offers can be a bit hit or miss, and while Woolies offers are absolute trash lately, they may still be better when stacked with the 10%.

If shopping in person with Woolworths and Coles in the same location, you use a website such as:
https://grocerize.com.au/browse to cherry pick what you buy and from where.

Both recost their specials on Wednesdays (but you can see the upcoming specials from Monday evening).

Spend to satisfy the Coles min spend offers, but be selective with what you buy and save.

As a paid 10% off subscriber to both coles and woolies I can relate. You have to be very strategic when and what you buy each month if you want maximum discount.
I went from spending 0 time to planning grocery shops, to always sitting down and pre planning a shop. Maybe it’s part of getting old. Maybe it’s wanting to avoid being a victim of price gouging as much as possible.

I absolutely maximize the flybuys and rewards points as much as possible and take advantage of all offers I can.
Coles and Woolies are taking as much as possible from you, why wouldn’t you do the same back?

As Colin2905 said above, the discount is not off any gift cards.

I check out the Booster Points offers you get every week from Everyday Rewards and if there is a good one then a check out the catalogue and make a list including all the irregular or household cleaning items I need and do one big shop a month. I keep a list of ad hoc items like Drain Crystals, disinfectant, ice cream cones, cornflour or things I only buy occasionally that are home branded items where the prices don't change and buy up but only if needed.

For you. just compare the bonus points offers you get from both stores and pick which is best and suits your needs or spend amount for that week.

Some times I just go in late in the month and buy what i need and just get whatever discount on that amount just so I don't waste it.

If you know you are not going to use it you could also give your ER card number to a friend or family member and let them use your discount. I store mine in another app like Supercards and it works the same as the ER app so just a thought to help someone else out.

I hope this helps and happy shopping.

The next topic will be "My rewards dollars have been redeemed by a friend. What should I do?"

      • Have your points converted into qantas points then sell points on ozbargain for a profit.

We basically buy all our staples from Woolies with the 10% off plus %3 gift card discount. Essentially buy whatever is comparable price wise to aldi such as milk, cheese, baking staples, bread, etc and get the %13 off on top of that. Usually equates to about $200 shop a month and we try and line it up with some bonus points offer.

    • does anyone in your family qualify for a seniors card? If so you can get 5% off woolies/wish cards.
WISH Gift Cards can be used to pay for everyday expenses like groceries and household items at participating Woolworths Supermarkets, BIG W, Caltex Woolworths and EG branded fuel sites and more
