Decided I'd grab something with a bit more oomph about it than some of the cheaper retro consoles. Hopefully it helps someone.

Lol at the review complaining that device is rooted and their bank is blocking him from using their app on the device.

Imagine thinking doing your online banking on this is a good idea…

I reckon you would be better off getting a Retroid Pocket 5 for more: $239 USD landed in Sydney

Better analog sticks, more portable, snapdragon 865 (better for switch emulation)

    • That’s an additional $150 AUSD though. Don’t get me wrong, the additional power is handy (I’ve got a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro myself) but all depends on your use case. Of note too, the new Retroid Pocket 6 (or whatever it will be called) will be using the newest generation snapdragon processors. So we maybe seeing Odin 2 and higher power in the next Retroid offerings. Personally right now I’d be waiting for that announcement instead of getting a Retroid Pocket 5, as the release of a new Retroid (not the flip or classic) might be closer than expected.

      • Yeah I agree the key point is use case - I want a device for travel (plane/train rides). This is not my at home moonlight device (that is an ipad mini + gamesir g8+)

Retro Pocket 5 is great for that usecase, more than the RG556; and even more so than the Odin 2 Portal (too big)

I think for the performance you get already with the 865, the upgrade to SD8G2 does not incrementally add more playable games; which is why i decided against waiting for the RP6

      For US$100 more?
You'd lose the OLED screen, and gain only a bit more power.

      • +1

        RP5 has oled

and you can get it 208 USD landed with coupon: https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005008465447945.html?

        $30 cashback from TOP cashback

      • As others have said already, RP5 has OLED. It actually has a better panel than RG556

And the “bit more power” gives you switch emulation at 60fps for a lot of games

Love mine. Use it for PS2/GameCube emulation 95% of the time, but it handles 3DS really well too, and even the odd Switch game if that's your bag. Android games are (obviously) excellent too, but all I really have is like Minecraft, GTA, and Vampire Survivors.

Anyway, screen is great, performance is great, sticks don't have the greatest range of motion (biggest complaint you'll hear from people) but I've never had any problems and personally quite like them.

  • HODL… Switch 2 is right around the corner! Majority of the handhelds will drop prices

    • +4

      Doubtful. They’re completely different things.

    • Maybe old switches that you can jailbreak and emulate on, but these devices won't be affected.

  • Damn… I just sold a second hand one for $250 lol. Guy that bought it said he tried Ali express but it got cancelled

    • Wow i bought mine brand new from anbernic official store on ebay for $240 back in last september lol
