Add/Remove button for religious and adult items from OzBargain

Hi Everybody,

I have an idea for an upgrade to the sign-up / my account features of OzBargain.

As the users of OzBargain are aware, religious postings cause quite a bit of controversy from the Atheists on OzBargain, who don't want to see these posts. As the moderators know.

On the flip-side of the coin, items of an adult nature are not allowed to be posted. Scotty - The owner of OzBargain want to keep his website work-safe and protect his investment.

My idea is simple, upon sign-up or within your account options you would have two buttons, one would says something along the lines of 'I wish to see bargains of a religious nature' and another button that says 'I wish to see items of an adult nature'.

These buttons could be ticked/un-ticked during account activation or through the 'my account' link. Both these buttons would be disabled by default and for guests that haven't signed in.

This way the site would remain work-safe and unbiased towards any religion.

Your thoughts?

  • Sounds fine to me.

And new Religious and Adult categories would need to be provided that can be selected during deal submission.

  • the world is full of hypocriscy
the ozbargain business needs to be politicallt correct so that it does not lose market share overall.
    a tough decision

    • I don't think it has anything to do with PC. It is giving people the choice to not see stuff they know they are not interested in.

  • The big issue with adult items is not offending people (although this applies), but ensuring you are not going to get into any legal trouble with many of the confusing a stupid laws that are rapidly changing in this area. Is the benefit really there?

On religious items, this doesn't really work unless you specify what religion. Otherwise all you are doing is separating the atheists, which doesn't really help.

  • There are 2 separate things discussed here.

Let's broadly define adult items. Things of 18+ in nature.

    Alcohol - Allowed
Movies/Video games that are rated R/MA - Allowed
Cars or car related items - Allowed
    Condoms or prophylatics - Allowed
Pornography or toys - Not allowed
Cigarettes and related items - Not allowed by law
Websites displaying nudity - Not allowed
    Gambling - Not allowed

See Banned list for further things

There already is a Not Safe for Work (NSFW) feature here where you can opt in/ opt out to see things. See here.

So your sweeping statement about what you think the site is about, is overgeneralized. Also, these allow/ban lists have been made with much discussion with other moderators and community feedback.

As for religious deals, where is the line you draw? OK, the Free Niv Bible is religious. How about music that are Christians or Christian rock (POD, U2)? Should we come up with a blacklist of all musicians affiliated with religions? How about food deals? Sanitarium, makers of Up N Go and Weetbix are 7th day Adventists. All money goes back into their religion. Religious deal?

I personally don't think we want to encourage religious segregation. This kind of thing is happening in troubled parts of the world and that hasn't been working out well. I don't really understand how the same people who are all about freedom of speech in the same breath don't want the people to practice their freedom of religion. If you don't like a deal, just ignore it and move on. No reason to berate people who do enjoy the deal. This goes for Apple vs. Android as well.

    • This goes for Apple vs. Android as well.

but Neil how can we, you are a recent android convert should know by know that apple totally sucks ;-)

  • +1

From my experience, if you do not want religion related (or mostly Christianity related) posts on OzBargain, just block those two domains:

    To block the domains:

    • Click through one of the deals listed in the store page
    • Click on "Hide from Listing"
    • Select "Hide deals from store Youversion.com" (or koorong.com)

You should be able to block other domains from deals you are not interested of, up to 50 domains I think. I doubt there are that many religious deals that need more than 50 domains blocked. Go and do it, as Koorong is already one of the most blocked site on OzBargain.
