  • Even with discount, covermore was cheaper

    • +1

I think it depends your travel destinations. My quote came back more expensive with Covermore - Int'l travel.

      • Care to share which destinations?

I got better prices with Covermore when I went to Japan last month.

        • I'm doing multi countries and Japan is one of them. It may varies because of our age, single / couple / families and all sort of other variables. Just do multiple quotes with different companies.

Raise general cover premiums by 25% percent then give 15% discount. Win win for Allianz

  • +2

They are stupid expensive. I recently got a bunch of quotes for "comprehensive/top tier" travel insurance to UK/Europe, all were in the $400-500 range, Allianz is $900. No weird/high risk countries.

    • +2

UK is high risk these days

  • Anyone see any good travelsims for Japan atm?

  • +13

TickOn20 code still works on Tick. Came out heaps cheaper for me.

    • +1

Thanks, was booking for an upcoming trip to Japan, Tick appears to be the best value.

    • +6

Anyone else recommend Tick? Insurance is only as good as the cover and willingness of the insurer to pay out in a claim.

      • +2

        Only for Lyme disease

      • +3

we had a successful claim paid out by Tick for $5K. They were good to deal with

      • +1

Tick get 4 stars (out of 5) on PR.

        https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/tick-travel-insura…

        Allianz also get 4 stars..

Agree on your point though - the trick is to find a list of good insurers, sort by price then go with the cheapest.

Some things even travel insurance can't insure. :)

  • Just a heads up that if you own a Westpac/NAB/AMEX credit cards you may be eligible for free travel insurance for you and your family.

    • Do you have to use the cards to buy the airfare? The accommodation? The tours?

      • Depends on the card, with Westpac Black there is no requirement for the airfare to be purchased on the card. However, the accommodation/other prepaid costs must be at least $500 per traveller including you and your dependants.

There are many cards that require you to purchase the airfare on the card to qualify.

    • As in the standard credit card insurance for travel? Eg the black card ones?

I always question if what they offer is enough or if I should be buying my own standalone insurance on top.

      • I'm about to buy travel insurance even though I booked my flights via my card which apparently has travel insurance coverage. But I find it hard to trust it. It's like a blanket statement but there's nothing tangible to confirm I have coverage for the trip.

        • All cards that have complimentary insurance will have a PDS or similar showing exactly what's covered.

Suncorp (and probably others underwritten by Allianz) have a website you can enter all your details and get a statement of coverage: https://travel.agaassistance.com.au/suncorp/travel-insurance

          • @Carrera1963: Yes and they would be pretty basic cover so best to compare. Better than nothing obviously but those cards would also have an annual or monthly fee.

Genuine question - with the prevalence of credit card provider travel insurance, what’s the justification for a standalone general travel policy? I get it for extreme sports but I’ve never found the credit card policies lacking.

    • +1

Have you ever claimed? Because that would be the test.

      • A long time ago and it worked out, that was on a discrete policy before I could access credit cards.

    • I’m also after the same answers. I normally just assume the insurance on the standard bank Black cards are enough? Or should I be buying standalone products? Hard to tell

      • +1

The cards from all the usual suspect banks are underwritten by legit underwriters like AIG or Allianz and the amounts for the stuff that matters like medical and repatriation are all usually in the many millions, so you’d think they would work. The only things that would make me buy a standalone policy would be if the card insurance excluded snow sports or diving (which some do) or then excluded a country I wanted to go to.

I do have a nervous nelly friend who didn’t trust this card insurance, for him it wasn’t really founded on any real negative experience.

When in doubt, call them. That's what I do.
I am heading to Everest base camp this year, was looking a travel insurance covering upto 6000m altitude. Most of them had additional cover requirements, apart from Allianz which covers upto 6000m without add-ons.

Then, I checked my card insurance PDS which is underwritten by Allianz and was pleasantly surprised that there is no limit for altitude. Called them to check the altitude limit (along with other coverage) well they confirmed whats in PDS

In this case, card insurance covers more than the stand alone.

The other thing to check is durations. For instance, the insurance for the Qantas credit card only provide cover for 30 days for car rental. We were in Europe for longer so I took a standalone insurance to be safe.

        • Yep correct, both NAB and Westpac credit card insurance is backed by Allianz

    • +1

Check your credit card insurance policy as some of them do not cover pre-existing medical conditions. They can be as benign as any not covering any condition that you are currently taking medication for, or if you have been in ED recently for the condition. Some credit card insurance policies require you to complete a lm online questionnaire with the insurer to check whether the pre-existing condition can be covered and if so, an admin fee may be charged for this cover (I’ve seen around $75 for ANZ Allianz cover).

      • Good point, I didn’t know this was a thing!

    • I always use CC insurance because it’s “free” and seems to have similar coverage. To me the most important thing is medical cover and mine cover either up to unlimited or $20million. I have made two claims in the last year and both were successful. The secret is to read and understand the cover and limitations in the PDS. Also I generally travel with two CC policies at the same time because both have different limits for the same events!

    • You have to compare them - basic credit card travel insurance may be ok and better than nothing but no doubt there are exclusions / limits.

      • Yes, there are exclusions, just like every other insurance policy you can buy. No policy has no exclusions!!

For me, the CC exclusions don’t affect me. I’m not likely to bungee jump or BASE jump etc any time soon!! Nor am I likely to participate in competitive sports while travelling!! But I agree with you, you must be aware of exclusions together with the whole PDS!!

        • Yes of course , nice reminder to people.
As long as it has adequate hospital cover and all that, my contents has a personal valuables cover anywhere in the world for 30 days, the excess is a bit high such that I wouldn't bother really (and not taking anything too valuable this time).

  • This is a good deal. I recently purchased a policy through HCF for a discount (allegedly 25% off) and using this code for the same quote comes out much cheaper. That's annoying

  • I would personally only go with either;
Fastcover - Very solid value, good reviews of people needing to claim
InsureAndGo - Fantastic value, good reviews of people needing to claim, $0 excess eliminator option

    • Last time I looked (last year) southern cross insurance was competitive and also had good reviews re claims

  • I think these are both expiring today, but two other alternatives:

NIB travel insurance 15% off with JET15
Travel Insurance Direct 20% off with SMILE20

Same underwriter so basically the same product other than some minor differences in covered amounts.

  • Allianz is a terrible travel insurance company. I used them once and had to wait over an hour on hold several times to process my claim for a damaged camera lens. They didnt even want to pay the full amount so in the end I got AFCA involved to get it sorted.

I can recommend Insureandgo. I have used them since and never had any problems. They were really helpful and quick responding when I needed to see a doctor overseas.

  • I used this code for my upcoming trip and they came in a lot cheaper than every other company I tried

  • +1

Australia Post Travel insurance is very competitive

    • Just looking at Aust Post PDS. Nice can set $0 excess for some items,
Mopeds aren't included by default (call for additional quote) so will give them a miss.

Insureandgo OFFER10 10% off. fair few exclusions, no mopeds etc

  • Having a quick look around now for SE Asia.

I used Allianz last time (pre-covid), they seemed fine, pretty comprehensive. I have also used Sothern Cross & Covermore / 1cover.

  • Are there any insurance that would cover restaurant booking cancellations due to flight delays?

    • Planning it down to the tee..

I'd ask chat gpt what you asked us ;)

    • Nothing stopping you from putting in a legitimate restaurant booking claim.

Whether the TI pays out; well that's up to them.

      • Yeah read the PDS
