Shame some people just can’t scroll on. Nice words Sir.

Far out it's closer to 20. The new atheist movement was such astroturfed rot. Sam Harris is old Hollywood money, his mother was worth 3/4 of a billion from producing the Golden Girls amongst others.

        • -1

The new atheist movement was such astroturfed rot

I've only ever heard 'astroturf' being used to describe when a wealthy political/commercial institution falsely incorporates a "grass roots" movement full of false/misinformed individuals to (unwittingly/secretly) push their agendas [e.g. the oil industry putting forth "drivers alliances" talking about how a city needs more motorways and less public transport]

How would astroturfing work in the atheist example?

      • As a nullifidian myself, I heartily agree. The people who tonk all over these deals absolutely shit me.

    • +3

      A deal is a deal…

People upvote "deals" that are actually just promotions in other posts. Compared to those deals, this one is ACTUALLY a deal… Be angry at those instead?

      Move on.

Thanks for the trip back to the days before broadband:

A new priest at his first mass was so nervous he could hardly speak. After mass he asked the monsignor for help. The monsignor replied, "When I am worried about getting nervous on the pulpit, I put a glass of vodka next to the water glass. If I start to get nervious I take a sip."

So the next Sunday he took the monsignor's advice. At the beginning of the sermon, he got nervous and took a drink. He proceeded to talk up a storm. Upon return to his office after mass he found the following note on his door:

    Sip the Vodka, don't gulp.
There are 10 commandments, not 12. There are 12 disciples, not 10. Jesus was consecrated, not constipated. Jacob wagered his donkey, he did not bet his ass. The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are not referred to as Daddy, Junior, and the Spook.

David slew Goliath, he did not kick the shit out of him. When David was hit by a rock and knocked off his donkey, don't say he was stoned off his ass. We do not refer to the cross as the Big T. When Jesus broke the bread at the Last Supper he said, "Take this and eat it, for it is my body", he did not say, "Eat me."

The Virgin Mary is not referred to as the, "Mary with the Cherry". The recommended grace before a meal is not:"Rub-A-dub-dub, thanks for the grub, yay God". Next Sunday there will be a taffy-pulling contest at St. Peter's, not a peter-pulling contest at St.Taffy's. Don't refer to Jesus Christ and the 12 disciples as J.C. and the boys.

Yeah I know, I'm gong to hell.

Try and wrap your brain around eternity

    • -5

If I understand it correctly, it was not Jesus who died by crucifixion. God Almighty did not let it happened to His beloved servant. He always saved His prophets, like Abraham who was saved from fire.

      • +2

It's so convenient that Islam comes 600 years after Jesus and then claims that the most significant event in Christian history (the death of Jesus on the cross), was a lie…

Did you know that 11 out of the 12 disciples were murdered/martyred for Christ? They didn't go to such lengths to share the gospel if they were still in their sins and destined for judgement because Christ did not die for them…

        • +2

There are people far more recently who have died for their belief that vaccines were some sort of population controlling government conspiracy. Truly heartfelt, deep, meaningful belief. The strength of their belief didn't mean they were right.

          • @banana365: Well we'll see come judgement day. I've done my due diligence and put all my chips on Jesus. I can only hope you've done the same. Eternity is a long time to be wrong.

@ifreddo: Ah, the wimpier version of Pascal.

              • +1

@banana365: It's not Pascal, it's bible. That's where Pascal got this idea. If you don't accept Jesus' death as payment for your sins, you will pay for your own sins. A righteous, holy God will not leave sin unpunished. You've been warned.

                Matthew 25:31-46 NIV
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. [32] All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. [33] He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. [34] “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. [35] For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, [36] I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ [37] “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? [38] When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? [39] When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ [40] “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ [41] “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. [42] For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, [43] I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ [44] “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ [45] “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ [46] “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

                • +1

@ifreddo: After millennia, you guys really haven't worked out that your marketing department sucks. "Behave how we tell you or you'll burn for eternity." You really need to work on that.

                  • -1

@banana365: After millenia, you still don't understand the Christian gospel. No amount of good behaviour will get you into heaven. No amount of good behaviour can pay for the sun you have caused against God. Heaven is not for good people, it's for bad people who have confessed their sin and have been forgiven. This is why the gospel is referred to as "Good News", because sinners, like me, can be with God in heaven if they accept Jesus' sacrifice for their sins.

You have not confessed your sin to God, because you think you are God. You think you are only accountable to yourself. You're probably a good person, I've never suggested that you are bad. But the biggest sin you have committed is that you live your life in ignorance of the one who made you. This is the biggest offence to God. You love His creation, and everything in it, yet you refuse to know Him. It seems you haven't done your due diligence, and you are walking a dangerous line. I'm warning you now, repent of your unbelief and desire to be God of your own life. I am happy to provide resources to you if you like.

                    • +3

                      @ifreddo:

                      1. God is all knowing and all powerful and can do whatever he wants. No one can override his authority.

                      2. If he wanted to he could save us all and we would all be in Heaven.

                      3. He's also the only one with the power to send us to Hell. He's the sole (and soul) decider of whether we get tortured for eternity or not.

And you're telling us he's going to blast us off to eternal torture unless we crawl on our bellies and tell him exactly what he wants to hear and hope he relents, and keeps to his word?

Isn't this just being stood over by a sociopath?

                      • -2

@Crow K: Important to apply context here - I'm not telling you anything of my own words, these are the words of Jesus whom you will meet one day.

You can't fathom eternal punishment because you currently have no respect for God, His holiness, and the seriousness of your sin. You are satisfied living in His house, but creating your own rules - which you would never do in any other persons house.
Proverbs 9:10 - 10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

The human spirit was created to live/survive on God in the same way that the body lives on food, or to vary the metaphor, in the same way that cars run on petrol. One can pour lemonade into the petrol tank in an attempt to save money, but the car will not run on lemonade. Unless one feeds petrol to the vehicle, it will not move. And unless one feeds food to the human body, it will not grow or live long. You can always try other things - During famines people tried to eat grass. But man cannot live on grass alone. Only food can sustain human bodily life.

In the same way, only the presence and beauty of God can sustain the human spirit. God does not ask that we worship Him because He wants the attention. A God who left the adoration of the heavenly angels to become a human being and suffer rejection, mockery, and crucifixion is clearly not a God who cares much about His own ego or His own rights. God wants us to worship Him because He loves us, and because feeding our spirits on His divine beauty is the only way we can truly live.

When a father tells his children at the dinner table to eat their food, he does so because he wants them to grow up big and strong, not because he wants them to praise his cooking skills. It is the same with our heavenly Father. He also wants us to live, and grow, and become strong. We can, like sulky children at the table, refuse to eat the food that alone can nourish us, and still expect to thrive. We can refuse to worship Him and still expect to live forever. But who is the crazy one then?

                        • +1

                          @ifreddo:

But who is the crazy one then?

I mean, he's still the sociopath because he's dangling eternal torture as a punishment over people who apparently have no other choice? (If "choose to do exactly what God commands or be tortured forever" can be described as a "choice", which it really isn't)

I suppose we could say people who choose to speak for the all knowing and tell us of his preferences might also get a bit of a crazy label too? Because how can they presume to speak for him, etc.

I can accept some people can willingly engage in that sort of abusive relationship I suppose, and if they want Heaven then they do what He says and all that. Just seems like a rough deal that people who don't want that deal… Instead of, you know, just not having anything to do with Him and that's that, they get left alone to their own beliefs.. except there's no opt out from God; instead it's just eternal torture, forever, because how dare we defy Him.

And given we know he can do whatever he wants, and no one can stop him or command him otherwise, the inescapable conclusion is that's exactly what he wants for everyone who won't do exactly as he commands.

None of that really squares up in my mind with someone who describes themselves as just or all loving. None of it makes sense.

                        • @ifreddo: You know, I think you're maybe on to something. I've been missing a good, strong religious belief in my life. Thank you for your guidance.

I'm off to our local mosque and converting to Islam.

Quran is words from Allah and, contrary to Bible, it's been preserved throughout history. In it you can find these verses QS 4:157-158 "and for boasting, “We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” But they neither killed nor crucified him—it was only made to appear so. Even those who argue for this ˹crucifixion˺ are in doubt. They have no knowledge whatsoever—only making assumptions. They certainly did not kill him. Rather, Allah raised him up to Himself. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise."

I agree with you that double standards shouldn't exist but I just think everyone needs to be respectful in general. There's no need to speak negatively about a belief in general… Unless it involves hurting/killing others.. but no religion/lack of would promote this to my knowledge. It's the idiots within each of them that do this. The extremists islamics. The stupid priests harming kids the Israelis killing without behest, or any other psycho.
Idiots/murderers/rapists ruin it for a benign generally good values to be learnt from religions

      • When a religion has gross and privileged influence on political outcomes of ALL society, and is yet wallowing in hypocrisy, for not walking the talk,(not even coming close) methinks it's more than fair to point it out.

        • I didn't say otherwise.
I just said I think all people should be respectful in general.
I don't think my response was unreasonable.

      • +1

You clearly have no clue about Islam.

The Quran/Hadiths/Sīrah etc doesn’t just spread hate, it targets every single group, every race, every belief system, every individual who dares to exist outside of Islam.

•It calls Jews cursed, apes, and pigs (Quran 2:65, 5:60, 7:166).
•It declares war on Christians, calling them polytheists who must submit or be fought (Quran 9:29).
•It commands death for apostates, anyone who dares to leave Islam must be killed (Quran 4:89).
•It insults and degrades women, making them inferior to men, demanding they be beaten if they disobey (Quran 4:34).
•It sanctions slavery, including sex slavery, treating captives as property (Quran 33:50).
•It promotes endless violence, commanding Muslims to “strike terror into the hearts of unbelievers” (Quran 8:12) and to “fight until Islam rules over all” (Quran 8:39).

It goes on and on and the Hadiths/Sīrah are many times worse.

For instance if you want to understand what's actually going on with Israel/Palestine here's a good place to start.

Sahih Muslim 2922/Hadith 103 and also mentioned in the Hamas Charter (Article 7):

"The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him; but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews."

Islamic terrorists/fundamentalists are just following what's commanded of them according to Islamic teachings. Former ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi for example had obtained a Master's degree and a PhD in Islamic studies. So they're not "misinterpreting" or making things up for fun. That's just pure gaslighting to deceive those who have a limited understanding of Islam.

        • I don't claim to understand each religion. I do have friends from various religions and they are all very pleasant. So I found it aligned more to extremists in interpretation rather than factual teachings. If I am incorrect I apologize. But based of pure conjecture I've found lovely people from each religion. So I consider myself quite open and tolerant to all people.

          • +2

@maverickjohn: Yes of course I would reckon most Muslims themselves are probably either unaware of these teachings or just choose to ignore and follow their own peaceful version/s of Islam. However given that the Quaran is believed to be the literal words of "God" and the prophet is seen as the perfect role model, as far as Islam itself is concerned, the probability of any sort of meaningful reformation would unfortunately be next to nothing.

Also as far as Non-Muslims are concerned it's vitally important to learn about Islam because a lot of it, especially when it comes to political Islam, relates to Non-Muslims. Plus the end goal of Islam is a global Islamic Caliphate so there's that as well.

    • +1

ohh please what are you talking about? look at most new movies, tv shows .. they all attack Christians but no other religion

    • +1

It's hardly "fair game" when publicly insulting one particular religion gets you very real threats of death. You know which one I'm talking about. Meanwhile, adherents of all the other religions typically complain at worst.

Plus, unless the OP himself has insulted other religions, then asking for civility isn't hypocritical or too rich of a request.

While religion has inflamed the situation, the origin is ethnic.

        • -4

Actually the more you look, the more you realise that it has always been a religious conflict. That is bound to happen when one so called "religion" rather than promoting peaceful coexistence, claims to be the literal words of "God" and commands all non-believers to be either converted, subjugated/enslaved or killed. No they just have a very active email alert list whenever they dump a thread here.Think branch stacking.

    • I know right? I thought way less than 50% of the population actively engage in religion bs these days.

    • There is an amazing resurgence of interest in old school Catholicism, it's pretty extraordinary because it's not an easy religion to join or to learn about. It'll be interesting to look back on in a decade and try and figure it out.

Churches are known havens for child sex abusers and pedophiles who hide in plain sight.
Not only that, they even promote them into positions of leadership and forgive them when they abuse children.

It's proven by the royal commission conducted a few years ago and it still continues to happen around the world.

Plenty of proof from this account, an investigator dedicated to reporting on crimes within churches https://www.instagram.com/reachjulieroys

This alone is enough that I would avoid going to something like this, and I wouldn't bring my kids either.

Watch as the enablers come in and deflect blame by naming other lesser offender groups.Multiple ppl died ,thousands are harmed for life, and families included, due to the Catholic paedophile ring and cover up.And the apathy and denial within the flock.

I'm an atheist and am constantly thinking that this world needs more Jesus.

Maybe more Jesus less religion.Less PR propaganda.

    • He'd definitely want you to have faith in God.

I'd rather watch The Minecraft Movie.

And that was a flaming piece of excrement that I wouldn't wish upon anyone.

I watched it last Easter and enjoyed it. I was impressed by the quality of the production. And considering the cost that went into producing it I can't fault them for trying to recoup the cost usually via rental or subscription. But it's great that they make it free to view during Easter.
