    Is 51c per kWh cheap?

Standard residential power is about 35c/kWh. I don’t know anything about electric cars, curious how it works.

    • +7

You pay extra for fast (DC) chargers.

They have an output of 50-350kW depending on the unit itself. Of course the 350kW ones will cost more.

The 50c/kWh ones are probably 50kW units.

Average energy consumption is around 18kWh/100KM for a small EV SUV driving at motorway speeds only. That's about $9 per 100KM travelled which is on par with Toyota non plug-in hybrids running on E10 fuel (assuming 5L/100KM and fuel @ $1.80 per litre).

Obviously charging at home will be cheaper if:
      - Solar panels.
      - Discounted off-peak EV-only electricity plans.

I've got both so I don't spend a single cent on charging when driving around town only (which is 99% of my driving anyway).

      • +3

Home charging is best. We have solar, battery, and EV electricity plan costing 8.4c kWh between 9am & 3pm.

      • Does it work like… it draws 100 kWh to charge 100 kWh battery or there is some loss…. My gut feeling is it should be…. So how much do you actually draw from the (grid/solar/wind turbine) to charge 100 kWh battery?

        • +1

Losses are typically 5-7%. So to charge a 60kWh battery (e.g. BYD Atto 3) I would actually consume around 63kWh of energy.

    • +1

It's about standard these days. It'll cost more for faster charging rates.

Generally, EV's usually charge at home with cheaper rates or solar for free and these chargers are for travellers.

51c, if you’re on ozbargain you bought your EV with novated lease fbt exemption - so you get the GST back (5.1c) and then deducting the rest assuming 2nd highest tax bracket (39% with levy) - it’s nets out to 28c/kwh —> better than some residential, although solar and off peak rates cheaper this will likely be cheaper than fuel.

Or if you charge mostly at home (and especially with solar), you're better of claiming the cents/km method (4.2c/km) over the FBT year and forego individual public charging receipt claims. https://www.ato.gov.au/law/view/pdf/cog/pcg2024-002.pdf

      • +1

Or (hear me out), I incur near $0 of actual charging costs but still claim back costs using the 4.2 cents per KM method.

Claiming back $100 per month (~$30 in tax) while not actually incurring a cost, is peak Ozbargain brain imo.

        • PM more info? Keen to learn, have a SL7 incoming.

  • still free at Tesla destination chargers (slow charging though)
