Changing ISP Now Requires Your nbn AVC ID or OptiComm OAC ID

When you change ISP you now have to give a 15 character code from your current ISP to your new ISP.

This is to help prevent people from mistakenly disconnecting your internet by typing in the wrong address or on purpose.

Your 15 character nbn AVC ID or OptiComm OAC ID can be found in a few ways.

  1. On a recent bill from your current ISP.
  2. Signing into your current ISP online account.
  3. Signing into your current ISP mobile app.
  4. Contacting your current ISP.

Contact your current ISP support if you don't know your nbn AVC ID or OptiComm OAC ID.

Probably a good thing. Someone disconnected our internet and it was a PITA to reconnect to the same plan. We switched ISP in the end.

Yeah all it took was to type the wrong address and you get disconnected. This should put a stop to it.

        Thanks for the heads up.

Is the code unique to the property?

        • nbn LOC ID are unique to the property.

You get a new nbn AVC ID when you change ISP.

If you move house or change service provider, your new connection will have a different AVC ID to specify that particular connection.

          • @Twix: When I switch providers I usually ask the new provider to use the next available port.

Once I’m connected and happy, I cancel the old account.

How will the recent change impact me?

            • @HardQuiz: Nothing changes if you use the next available FTTP port.

Alternatively, if you are moving into a property and don't know your AVC ID or not transferring from another provider you can request to order a service without providing your AVC ID.

            • @HardQuiz: does that old provider can still charge you if they don't disconnect the old port
vs reusing the same old port?

              • +1

@pinkybrain: On FTTP you can have up to 4 active services at the same time.

Can you squeeze any more TLA’s in that title?

    • +2

You've never worked for Defence I assume?

      • +1

No, or should I say “negative”?

    • +2

Once worked for a bank that had its network defined in what it called the TLA table. If anyone asked the jokers would say it stood for Three Letter Acronym. It was actually the Terminal Line Assignment table. But it gave everyone a laugh.

  • its printed on my NTD

    • No that's your nbn location ID or NTD box MAC ID.

I cancelled with TPG last week and was not asked for this ID, from either TPG or the new ISP…

    • +3

Well last week is not today, so…

    • +1

      It started from today.

Today, being a public holiday +++ overseas call centre operator's will need to be retrained.

Most likely == sometime next week until "real world" effects … Until properly enforced.

I changed my parents NBN Wednesday around 7pm … From Westnet/iiNet/TPG. And no mention of AVC either.

This is not a sudden change taking ISPs by surprise. It was announced in December 2023. Staff would be trained beforehand and told to start asking on the cutover date.

I changed my parents NBN yesterday (Wednesday) around 7pm … From Westnet/iiNet/TPG. And no mention of AVC either.

Yesterday isn't today, why would they mention it? :)

          • @eug: strange choice of date to implement it, but a good move overall to avoid issues

        • They didn't ask for the AVC ID because it wasn't needed until today. Next time you will need the AVC ID.

          • @Twix: TPG certainly aren't renowned for being pro-active (quite the opposite in fact).

  • +1

Exetel not mentioned, but they have the AVC ID on their invoices, starting from Dec 2024.

A long needed change. The biggest issue I encounter is inexperienced NBN technicians moving the physical connection from one business to another by mistake when "fixing" issues. It gets complicated fast when it's a multi tenant building and VDSL.

  • Of course Telstra make it difficult to find this ID, nowhere to be found on the app.
