Holy Moly, cheap chocolate! I believe it works out to $11.80 kg (the linked one is the closest Variety/size I could find to what's being sold)

There I am trawling to see if any easter chocolate is even within cooee of being affordable (I haven't bought chocolate for many months as it's become so expensive).

Woo hoo. Ok, it's only Cadburys and only a few flavours (and they only had the plain left in that store). Marked as clearance, but they had quite a few left still in a few places around the store. I bought 10!

Best before is April 2026

  • Fruit & Nut same price in Coles.

  • Surely easter eggs will be cheaper right?

No they’re always really expensive. Just look at the price per 100 grams on the price label. Today they were like at least $3-4 per 100 grams. Only the cheap Chinese stuff, if they have it, is maybe from $2 per 100 and that only because Easter shopping is near an end.

This Dairy Milk is $1.18 per 100 grams.

Going back a while I used to have a rule I wouldn’t buy chocolate over $10 per kg. Now you’re lucky to find it twice that.

    • Easter eggs are often made with much lower-quality chocolate. They add extra fat, and it's not cocoa butter. Some are so bad they have to add artificial colouring to make it look sufficiently brown. If you see artificial colours in the ingredients list, often colour 110, it's low-quality chocolate.

      • Tastes Iike it too

I know what you mean, some make me wonder if I'm eating wax.

However, I went through Coles an Woolies online catalogs, and couldn't find any examples this year - but that's because every Easter egg at the big 2 is made by well-known brand names. No no-name eggs this year, which is where the worst chocolate is most common.

  • You mean "vaguely chocolate-flavoured sugar." This is nothing like actual chocolate.

    • I do think they've cut the cocoa content over the years. It says 27% cocoa solids, but I wonder if the cocoa butter is part of that?

Interestingly a lot of people reckon the UK Cadburys is better, but over there they can have up to 5% (I think that's the amount) of vegetable fat in it and still call it milk chocolate. Here that'd be called compound chocolate.

      • Just googled it and cocoa solids is the cocoa. So a good way to assess how chocolatey it is.

In the UK it can have as little as 20% cocoa solids and still be called chocolate (Yuk).

    • Agree to disagree. Cadbury remains my favourite chocolate.

Because you have a sugar addiction. It's not close to being chocolate.

  • Use to be $7 for a full box of broken choc from Cadbury direct (Tas).

  • I once bought a 5kg box of seconds and ate all of them within a week
