Needs a little window so you can watch the rice boil.. At least based on the name

  • +16

Just in case you aren't aware, don't wash your rice in the non stick bowl/pot. It's not good for the coating.

    • Is this because the rice is abrasive?

      • Yes.

    • -4

Don't wash your rice at all

    • +3

      Clearly you're not Asian?

This is a non-issue. Never had an issue because I do this for 20 years.

      • You've probably never used a decent rice cooker. I've been using rice cookers for over 30 years. 20 of those years have been with either Japanese or Korean rice cookers. I never used to use a different washing bowl but I when I lived in Japan I saw how they were using their expensive rice cookers and started to do the same.

        • +1

Your sample size is probably 1 or 2 people, because I've never heard of this until tonight.

(Also, why would they come with plastic rice spoons if they can't even handle hard rice… Also have you ever seen instruction manuals advising against this? This is common practise.)

My only expert tip to actually protect the coating:

          • Use a wooden or smooth plastic rice spoon, absolutely avoid any steel.

edit: Nevermind, maybe you have a point… They washed it separately in this video. TIL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mCLB2Xit6Y&list=PL8KJklYgSt…

…but I'm not going to bother. Never had any issues in 20 years.

Just for your reference I checked the product manual for my Cuckoo rice cooker. Here is page 15. Please read 3.

Good price, I have the 3-cup version which is the same price but has the advantage of being able to do a single cup of rice (this one is minimum 2 cup)

    • +7

2 cup minimum! Thanks for mentioning, that's a trap for young players.

      • +3

Ive cooked half a cup in mine. its fine.

    • Two cups of uncooked rice or two cups of cooked?

      • Uncooked. Depending on the amount of water, it expands to 2-3 times after cooking

    • +1

I have the model in the deal and am able to cook 1 cup.

    • +23

      Username checks out

    • -7

Yup. Dont see the point of this contraption

    • +7

You forgot the final step. Rinse under tap once cooked.

      • Where did you get this idea from? This is not a thing

        • +1

I think (I hope!) they were being sarcastic, as the pot boil method is often used by those who don't follow the absorption method, but instead boil the rice, then drain and rinse it.

        • -3

Hmmmmm, what could people have used to cook rice for the past few hundreds of years before electric rice cookers, definitely couldnt have been a pot on a stove, no, definitely not.

          • +2

@SuperMid: I never drain after cooked, you put too much water

          • +1

@SuperMid: The same thing that happened to horses when cars were invented. They stopped using them.

          • +3

@SuperMid: Couldn't this argument discount every single innovation ever?

      • Ok aunty Harsha

  • Does it come with instructions for different types of rice? I’m going to be cooking short grain (Japanese rice) and your regular Basmati or long grain varieties. Or if anyone who is currently an expert in this brand of cooker to let me know which measurements are ideal for these 2 types of grains.

    Cheers.

    • +2

Manual in this link on pages 12 & 15. You would add more water for basmati rice. I own a different brand (Buffalo) but someone may be able to advise you with this brand. Rinse the basmati rice well before placing in the rice pot/cooker.

    • +1

      Trial & error

    • +1

I have the same model. I feel different brands basmati cooks a bit differently too. The current pack of Fortune basmati cooks perfectly with 1 cup rice : 1.5 water ratio using "White" setting. (i don't soak rice but wash it well)
(we cook basmati like 4 days a week)

    • +2

I have this model rice cooker and cook both types frequently with fantastic results.

For the Japanese short-grain "sushi rice" I use the "white rice" measurement and setting. For Basmati, I use the "brown rice" measurement and setting too. Comes out perfect every time.

The basmati takes a while to cook though, because you can't use the "quick" option, but is light and fluffy when it's done.

    Really nice rice cooker.

Wash your rice in a separate bowl and drain first before placing into the rice cooker to preserve the integrity of the nonstick rice cooking pot

  • +1

Can you cook a whole meal in it? like with veges and chicken?

    • +1

You can use them as as low cooker yes, we do slow cooked beef casseroles and similar in ours, chicken curries too, beef stroganoffs.

  • +1

    So its a Cuckoo crock?

  • I want this but i dont have a costco sub. is it worth it to get it just for this?

    • +4

Probably. Gold Star membership is $65 per year. You can cancel the membership within 12 months and get a refund for $65. You cannot sign up again for the next 18 months.

There was an offer of $10 Shop Card for turning on auto renewal. Not sure if the promo is still valid. You can turn off auto renewal after.

Another option is to wait for MyDeal (with $15 off) and an upsized cashback from one of the cashback sites.

Got one. Texture is perfect and much nicer tasting than induction stovetop method or cheaper rice cooker from Kmart. 2 cups takes around 45min but it’s very easy to use and clean.

    • And I presume nicer than doing it in the microwave in one of those round red plastic Decor rice cooker bowls?

      • +11

Without a shadow of a doubt, most definitely.

      • I use my decor microwave one for brown wife, I’d be curious to know if that variety can be improved with a decent cooker like this

        • +2

wondering what brown wife tastes like?

          • @ntt: Haha, oops.

(Tastes good, she doesn’t like the microwave though)

            *rice

  • Looking for one that makes sushi rice. I am assuming this isnt a great option for that.

    • +1

      these'll cook stickyrice

    • +1

I use mine for sushi rice with no issue.

  • Is there a battery for the display? How to replace it?

    • +1

      You plug it in…

    • +3

There is a battery for the display, unfortunately. Is a little complex to replace from memory, but there are guides online. They say the battery lasts around 3 years.

  • -5

I just cook rice in microwave, 1 cup 10mins uncovered + 4 mins covered, perfect everytime. I understand this purchase if you use a ton of rice at once

    • +2

It's a bit like microwaving chips vs using an air fryer.

      • -2

I disagree, tastes exactly the same to me

      • Or microwaving a steak vs using a grill :D

  • This or instapot ? On sale at bigw currently

    • Good question, I have the Breville Pressure Cooker (stainless steel) great rice but a pain to clean. If yours is non-stick and your happy why change?

    • +1

I have an instapot and it was such a pain to cook rice on that we bought a Cuckoo one (different, slightly fancier model). The Cuckoo cooks pretty well.

My instapot is Instant pot duo crisp. Other models might have better results with rice. It's still not an induction cooker like the Cuckoo.

      • This one isn't induction, though? The induction one costs $549

  • Any tips for making coconut rice with Jasmine rice?

    • Make rice, pour in contents of coconut can. Eat.

      • Wow, much helpful. What is the ratio of coconut milk/water to add before turning on the rice cooker? It seems to always stop cooking when the rice is nowhere near cooked enough whenever I add any coconut milk

        • +2

Im not an expert, but i dont think the coconut needs much cooking itself, so put it in when the rice is basically done.

  • +3

we have this model at home, it has been a revelation how much difference a good rice cooker makes. I would only get a cuckoo going forward. A bargain at this price. Nice one OP

    • We got ours from Costco for $135 last time it was on sale. Works a charm. It replaced the Panasonic that only lasted 13 months (SR-DF181WST) made in China. The one before that was a Panasonic that was made in Japan lasted over 10 years.
