BWS Scam - $1 Refund Voiding Cashback

Recently utilised the Shopback BWS Cashback. This successfully tracked both the regular Cashback and the extra Apple Pay Cashback components.

I picked the items up with no issue.

The same day, I received a cryptic email:

SORRY SOME ITEMS WERE OUT OF STOCK. A few items in your order were out of stock at the time your order was picked in store. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will provide a refund for the total value of any out of stock items from your order.

The refund was $1.

This now voids the Cashback.

Any thoughts on if this was done on purpose? Anyone else had the same experience? Anything I can do to rectify this (other than just take the stuff back and refund it)?

This sounds dodgy AF. Tbh I’ve stopped using BWS because their cashback is the worst by far tracking wise. Also their pricing is not that good compared to the other majors. For the past 2 months Dan has had $50 discount on $300 spend so been utilising this and just stocking up. Also discounted gift cards bring the discount down even more!

This has peaked my interest. There’s got to be more to it.
Follow up with your purchase store, someone’s done that $1 refund and you as the customer would like to know why.
Show shopback your invoice and get them to follow up with BWS.
    Post up the resolution.

I’ve used the BWS/shopback cashback maybe 20+ times and haven’t had any issues.

    • Maybe just a mistake - never had a problem before. I’m going to call them and see what’s going on!

      • Right you are :)

  • What's only for $1? I don't think the persons managing stocklist have access to the cashback on any order.

    • Nothing!!! I made a $200 order and all the items were well over $50. The email had a “list of refunded items”, which was empty! The $1 refund was the total amount - despite no item being listed.

What was the $1 refund actually for?

  • Was there actually a $1 item refunded?
It sounds like you received ALL your items, right?

    This sounds dodgy ASF.

Ask them to specify what the refund is actually/supposedly for.

    • Pretty sure they sell nothing for $1.

      • That's what I thought. The only legit reason for a $1 refund I can think of is maybe they substituted an item with something similar but $1 cheaper? Otherwise it sounds like they've issued a nominal refund to avoid paying the cashback.

Cashback isn't what it used to be.

I saw the recent forum post of someone wanting to block all cashback posts, I was going to comment how I'm not a big spender but I have gotten $200 back in my pocket after 2-3 years. but that's because early on they would offer bonus payments regularly, like $10 or $20 bonus then eventually only $5 but it was regular.

most of the $200 is bonuses but honestly it's just not like that anymore if you join now you will probably just be scrounging cents and $2 here and there.
many cashbacks will change the conditions very frequent and try to use any excuse not to successfully track especially for bigger amounts.

as I said it's not how it used to be. also why BWS? I never found their prices competitive even with % cashback considered.

    • I've received $1600 back from shop back, no major issues so far. Normally use incognito tab in Google Chrome, a lot of it on hotels. Always compare peice on Google prior and sometimes it's cheaper to buy direct via hotel, other times booking.com is cheaper.

      • fyi there was a few posts on ozb in the past that said if you click through cashback for booking stuff, you get shown increased prices on all results.

I think if you claim during high % even with increased prices you probably save a bit overall, but they said it's still not as much as you think you are saving.

  • All my recent BWS shopbacks (feb through mid April) have confirmed 2 months early in less than 4 weeks, it’s better than it’s ever been
