14GB eSIM for 30 Days in Indonesia - Rp46,000 (~A$4.50) @ myXL

670

For those of us heading to Indonesia, XL Axiata offers a 14GB eSIM plan M plan for 46,000 IDR (~$4.50 AUD), valid for 30 days.

If you buy via the app it doesn’t seem to ask for passport or imei.Only name and email. Use a Revolut one time card or similar to purchase to be on the safer side.

Steps via the app: Beli esim, Beli esim, choose your eSIM for example Xtra combo Flex M, click bottom right (lanjutkan) Click on a number Lanjutkan (if error choose a different number) . Fill out Nama (name), no telp (telephone) email. lanjunktan.
Agree to terms and I’m not a robot. Lanjunktan and it takes you to the payment page. I still haven’t done the last step as I’m going later on. I’ll report once I bought it.

Please note that @patmccrotch and others have been unable to buy, as cards get declined. Perhaps Dana or another form of payment will be ok? I also tried but again payment failed. Please note that Agoda is selling this plan for over $12.64. Not as cheap of course.

Agoda: Agoda’s link

Key Features:
- Data Allowance: 14GB of 4G data.
- Validity: 30 days.
- Activation: Instant activation via QR code—no need for a physical SIM card.

Other plans are available too and there are bonus sign ups I believe. I am going in July so I’ll buy it closer to the date.

Buying via iOS app seems easier as doesn’t require as many details.

MyXL App: Manage your XL Axiata plan with ease using the MyXL app. Available on iOS for tasks like checking data usage, purchasing packages, and more.

Mod Warning: According to comments, this sim will not work for most without a lengthy IMEI registration and possible tax.

For 10 days or 30 days?

XL coverage is pretty average - especially if you head over to Nusa Lembongan / Nusa Penida or anywhere non-touristy… learnt the hard way using a non-Telkomsel sim card a few years ago, and having no / poor coverage half the places we went. Much better off spending a few dollars more and getting a Telkomsel card - their coverage is unparalleled.

Very silly comment. Good luck trying to use gojek or find your way around without a cell signal

Some of my friends prefer to use the wifi, but at the cost of $5-10 I'd rather get an esim and access Gojek etc

      • Better to have the signal just in case. Turn phone to airplane mode if you wanna disconnect

        • Remember "Just in case" that any mobile phone, even without a sim card inserted, regardless of the network can dial 112 in Indonesia (and other countries) to connect to emergency services.

      • What a stupid comment! Not only do I drive myself around whenever I'm in Bali (or use GoJek which requires internet), but I primarily use my phone for navigating around Bali, especially when going to areas not normally visited by tourists.

    • Thanks for pointing that out. I'll be staying mostly in Bali so hopefully will be ok.

While it's cheap but I wouldn't risk my identity details including passport. Digital data theft is a big problem in Indonesia.

As an Indonesian, I would highly recommend this as our identity have been stolen anyway.

      • I am wondering whether they are asking because after 91 they block your imei? If it’s under that no need to register I believe.

    • +1

Yeah go get one in person and they take copies on their phone and WhatsApp it back to head office…

    Absolute bargain! Thanks OP.

    • You are welcome! Happy travels.

  • Any recommendations of (physical) sim cards I can buy in Australia for an upcoming trip to Bali?

    • I usually just get one when you get over there, they are only like 10 or 15 bucks.

However I am liking esims as you can still get messages on your Aussie Sim. Just wait for a Deal, jetpac is pretty good.

Or for those really worried just get a roaming pack here with your normal Telco before you go. WiFi and VPN would be fine when at hotel and get offline google maps at least. Some people like to not be glued to their phone when on holidays but depends what you want.

Payment seems to stall after entering CC information:
Entered the card details, then prompted by my banking app to confirm, then the XL app asks for payment again.
    Tried another card, same thing.
All messages are in Indo, which doesn't help.

Not going through for me either

    • Is there an option to pay via OVO?

      • Yes

      • Maybe even Dana?

Dont you need to buy some sort special tourist sim card as our phone imei is blocked to use in Indonesia?
Or have I been scammed previously?

    • +1

      Same

    • Tourist sim or Tourist eSIM can be used without IMEI registration. The plans referenced are tourist eSim.

      • I think your imei gets blocked after 91 days.

  • Have any Aussies used this in Bali?. I head over next week and usually get a 35g actual sim delivered for $20. This would be a lot cheaper if it works fine.

Don’t you need to pay and register your phone imei first if you are using local eSIM/sim?
I also use roaming tourist eSIM where not require to register

    • I am not sure. I just know that Agoda is selling this plan for over $12 (which is still pretty good).

      • Like the same plan? Then it might just be ok for tourists

        • Yes. I added a link have a look.

  • Sorry to thread jack, anyone have any deals for esim for The Philippines?

    • Look at Agoda and Globalyo

Indonesia is a very big place and some SIM's only work in the large centres. I've travelled twice to Bali and then on Sorong (far Eastern Indonesia) and I can say Telekomsel worked in these locations. I have bought both SIM and eSIM from Travelkon and they have been available via whatsapp quickly when I had any questions. Travelkon post here every month or so.

Unless this is a 'tourist pack', it won't work when you get there. Your IMEI needs to be registered, which is a whole different process (I've been through it). It involves having submitted forms, printing paperwork and being shuffled off to a little room when you get there for them to complete the process. If your phone is worth more than $500 USD, you will pay tax above that.

Best to stick with whatever you can buy online from Kayak etc, they are geared for tourists/short term visitors.

Even if you are able to complete the purchase of this SIM, you'll be asked to provide NIK/KK/Passport details with the first two being Indonesian ID and family card data before the SIM can actually be activated.

All phones not sold in Indonesia are IMEI blocked unless you purchase a tourist SIM from one of the carriers.
Btw, you have about 1% chance of a foreign credit card working on almost any Indonesian website, they almost always block non-Indonesian cc's.

It's not worth the hassle to save $8.

XL Network is fine, I travelled from Central Java to Surabaya via train and all around Bali with it. It's like the Optus of Indonesia, 2nd carrier after Telkomsel being the Telstra.
If you are going rural and connectivity is vital, you need Telkomsel.

    • So if I have been before and had a local shop set up a Telkomsel sim for me, my phone is ready to go for one for these esims? Or the IMEI needs to be registered each time?

      • +1

If you went before they brought in the IMEI block, it wouldn't have been a problem. The foreign IMEI block was introduced in Oct 2020.

If you go there now, the only SIM/eSIM that will work is one that is labelled as a tourist SIM/pack. You can still buy them at all the usual places, including the airport (if you want to be ripped off). Otherwise just buy them at those little stalls on the street and get them to help you activate it, go to a Telkomsel/XL store or buy an eSIM from Kayak before you go.

For the use of local SIMs, the IMEI only needs to be registered once, but just be aware - it's more hassle than its worth IMO unless you go to Indonesia half a dozen times a year.

    • Thanks for the clear and detailed information bonez!

Do you know if I can:

      1. buy a physical tourist sim from Telkomsel website with my aussie cc?

      2. have it be ready to pickup at Denpasar airport?

    • This product is labelled as Beranda / Sim Tourist / Esim

Visit Indonesia and stay connected anywhere you go

Easy steps to get your Xtra Combo Flex eSIM

      Step 2
      Fill In Your Information
Prepare your passport, email, and device ID (IMEI) and fill in the information required by Indonesia’s Government. (exclude Indonesian Passport)

      Is this a "tourist pack"?

      • Yes it is, but you won't be able to buy it online. You'll need to get one when you get there.
