16GB Exos drives have been reasonably lower in price than this 14TB.

    • They're lower performance compared to the last deal's model, it really depends on model with Seagate.

Can't find benchmarks of this model so it's a bit of a lottery.

  • any decent deals on ST8000DM004 ?
    Seagate Barracuda 8TB
I have 2 and looking to get 2 more.

      The ST8000DM004 is SMR so it’s 💩

  • Pardon my ignorance, so are these refurbs definitely not used?

Product description states 0 used time? Or is that just showing 0 used time after a SMART / FARM reset by Seagate?

    "0 used time,
    Factory Recertified Product,
    Zero Bad Sectors,
    3YR WR From Seller!!!"

They're refurbs but they've reset smart data, it's essentially false advertising but most people here know them for that now. Usually they're pulled from Seagate's external drive offerings which are returned as DoA etc, or some that have failed early and been factory repaired.

You're basically relying on their 3 year warranty, but I wouldn't trust them with mission critical data - just for use in a RAID array and/or files which you can afford to lose if the worst happens.

Don't buy 'new' drives from them; they're usually reset smart data too.

No, Seagate themselves have reset the SMART data - these are Factory Recertified drives.

These are supposed to have reset SMART data, there is nothing nefarious going on.

it's essentially false advertising but most people here know them for that now. Usually they're pulled from Seagate's external drive offerings which are returned as DoA etc,

None of this is true for a Factory Recertified drive.

  • BARRACUDA! @ east digital.

  • Use a foreign transaction fee-free card when buying from East Digital if you have one.

    • They bill in AUD don't they? I thought ACCC cracked down on banks charging international fees when it's AUD?

      • The amount indicated at checkout time is in AUD but I was charged by PayPal in USD which triggered the CC foreign transaction fee. Not the end of the world but really annoying that neither PayPal or the bank would take any responsibility.

      • +1

If the seller is transacting from outside Australia you'll still be screwed.

    • I block international transactions on cards with fees to avoid unexpected charges when unsure of their payment processor's location.

It can be very difficult to know until you try.

  • Too bad the $220 14TB HC530 went OOS.

    • Not sure about this model, but the HCs don’t perform as well as the exos. They’re pretty trash in all honesty

      • Have a bunch of HC550s and they’re easily the most reliable drives I’ve had.

What is relatively trash is Seagates reliability, and the ability for their SMART data to be reset

  • Damn, still waiting for a 22tb or higher sale. I plan to upgrade my NAS in the next 6 months.

    • The 20+'s have been $25+/tb for a little while now sadly.

There's some deals on a little lower, ie $22/tb for 16TB https://east-digital.myshopify.com/products/st16000ne000-sea… only 4 in stock though. Hoping to see another <$20/TB 20TB+ deal soon… It's been 3 or 4 months.

      • I currently have 3 x 18tb mixed into a shared volume and a 1 x 22tb as a separate volume (Synology 423+). My longer term plan was to migrate one by one the 18tb drives into a 22tb to end up with 3 x 22tb and have 1 x 18tb as the bonus volume. Given the costs though I might just say stuff it and get a 4th 18tb drive and make a 4 drive volume and smack the 22tb into an external enclosure and use as a cold backup.
The 2025 Synology NAS solutions are useless to me given the drive restrictions (plus the 2025 models are not Plex friendly/better from a transcoding perspective) so buying a new Synology NAS system as a separate NAS off site backup solution is also out.

  • Has anyone heard or had items ship? Its been 9 days, 7 emails and NOTHING. Not a reply. Never had this issue in the past with East Digital.

    • There was only a handful in stock afaik, I didn’t bite on this one (HODLing for some 20+ ones)

    • I have had a great experience with East Digital (3 purchases) so I would give them the benefit of doubt right now. Maybe they had a slightly longer Easter break?

      • Yeah I’ve never heard of delivery issues with them, have heard of drives having a lot more use time than stated but never delivery issues
