Or could get 128GB USB 3.0 for $15 if you don't care about compactness - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00P8XQPY4?smid=ANEGB3WVEVKZB&t…

    • +2

Compactness, and USB 3.0, rather than USB 3.1

Funnily enough, I care about compactness, but not USB 3.1 over USB 3.0 in my application.

      • +1

Or for another $4 get 128GB with both compactness and 3.1.

        • +1

Showing up as $19 on my side of town, and if my mathematics is correct that's an extra $9, over the original $10

          • +4

@dna level c: If he's replying to jgatto post about the $15 option, then this is $4 more than that?

        • +1

          ‎1 AAAA batteries required!

USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1, and USB 3.2 Gen 1 are all the same thing. Literally only marketing names.

        • -5

          Literally?

        • -1

in terms of these drives, yes, 3.0 is faster than their xfer speed so 3.1 or 3.2 won't matter. but pretty disingenuous statement taken at face value.

          • +3

            @jbird84: No, literally.

If it doesn't specify the generation, or states it's generation 1, it's USB 3.0. As in, literally the USB 3.0 specification with nothing extra. They just retroactively renamed them. It's stupid and confusing.

            Here's some info

        • You will also find some of these drives will be blazing fast on one motherboard with usb3 where as super slow on another mobo. So are they the same?

  • Basically a mini usb at this point

  • +2

Upvote for the deal, and the Shield reference.

    Must resist… don't need more USB drives…

  • +3

These are great for music in your car. Fast enough and they don't stick out much so are low risk for breakage or socket damage.

    • Exactly what I use my for, you can fit a lot of albums on 64gb.

  • OOS :-(

    • Sorry! hate it when that happens.

On the good side, backorder is available from what I'm seeing, might be worth putting in an order.

These mini drives never last as long as the larger usb drives in my experience

  • I got these for $17 each last year I think from Kmart are these better
SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go USB Type-C and USB Type-A Flash Drive SDDDC3 -

I got them for downloading music i purchase and will transfer on to a bigger hard drive at some point.
Are these just as good as above in this thread and what’s the best deal the $10 ones?

  • +3

Aren't these the ones that get really hot?

    • +2

Yes they melt after a while. There is a more expensive metal version

    • +1

Yes, I had a lot of issues with one when playing high-bitrate video

    • +1

Yup. Summer sun in the car + drive heat = becoming one with your usb port.

  • +2

In my experience, these drives get very hot, writing to them is frustratingly slow and lastly, the plastic plug cracks after numerous plug/unplug cycles. I bought a bunch of these a couple of years ago and after I saw how hot the first one was getting and how the plug split, I sold the remaining (unopened) ones on eBay. They're tiny though (which can be handy) and the best use I have found for the one I kept was in the car for mp3 playing. If you want something much sturdier and faster writing then get the Samsung Fit Plus. They're also tiny but are much more expensive (though well worth it).

    • +1

Yes they'll get hot while you're transferring a heap of data to them, and they aren't crazy fast, but then they cool down! Just don't use them where frequent transfer of data is required

In the use case described above by many (storing mp3's in a car stereo), once you're done with the original transfer, then they aren't going to get hot reading an mp3 at a rate of 1Mb-2Mb/min

      • +1

they aren't going to get hot reading an mp3 at a rate of 1Mb-2Mb/min

They do in Sony headunits. I had 4 of the bastards and moved them all to cold storage duties for my parents. Too hot for the car, even in playback.

        • Well I stand corrected! Going through 4 is quite persistent. Maybe the time of year/climate has an impact!

  • I bought this one for $9 + delivery, seems to still be in stock: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B077VXV323

    • 32GB though

      • Doh! Sorry!

  • I have/had one this size and kept losing it - in fact I can't find it now !

if it were red like my new Sandisk Ultra USB 3.0 64GB - $16 from https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/394820521496 - that might reduce the risk -

but for now my biggest risk with the tiny one is I lost it and can't find it again !

  • Bought one of these to use for my Unraid server. Last 3 months and was broken.

  • Hotter than the sun.
