Hey Oz Bargain Community,

I think this one is worth a read, but I also know life flies by quickly, so if you're too flat chat to read this small novel of a post, then please feel welcome to skip to the good stuff in bold

Some of you may likely have heard some scuttlebutt and maybe even read my prior heads up, that prices in the coffee market have been a little bit wild over the last 12 months and a look into the not too distant further seems like the wildness will continue. In the last year industry wholesale prices (usually 20kg is the min order for wholesale prices, some still offer it for 10kg orders) have increased about $10 per kg to $35-$38 per kg. The primary reason you haven't seen a whopping increase at the supermarkets is just because their suppliers are contracted with fixed prices, so some suppliers are likely selling it to supermarkets at a loss and prices will increase on the shelves when next contracts are in effect. Now before you start looking for the panic stations button, please keep reading on. I have locked in most, but not all of our next green coffee contracts, so the good news is I have a clear path forward, which I'm going to share with you here. In general prices have gone up substantially since I locked in the last lot of main contracts, but I've formulated a strategy (hopefully a good one) from a number of angles so the cost increase shouldn't hit you too hard. Great news for you is that I won't be passing the full increase onto you, so our margins go down a bit, but that's just the name of the game, I need to keep myself on my toes and continue to think outside the box. Also moving forward the quality will be on point with what you're used to from Lime Blue, as getting lower quality to reduce costs was a non starter for us. To make all the pieces of the puzzle viably fit together we've had to pivot a few things, notably increase contract volumes which achieve two things, first it means we were able to negotiate a better contract and section if we grow even at lower margins we can achieve economies of scale in certain areas which can help with the cost increases. For example, when you hit certain revenue levels overall merchant processing fees get reduced. Complimentary Lotus Biscoff will need to stop at some point in the future and of course if we viably can bring it back we will. We still have some stock on hand so it'll stay for a bit longer. I know you may be thinking how will that make a difference, but to get the price breaks I'd need to place a bulk order costing over $7,000 (I know that's a lot of biscuits), then if you add the wages based on time it takes to pack them and increased shipping costs it comes to over $10,000 annually. We're also working with our Australia Post account manager on a few strategies to reduce our shipping costs to try and partially mitigate their annual increases to us…also there's a bunch of other things I'm going to implement. Although all of these strategies won't counteract our cost increases they will help from a big picture perspective and enable us to make the puzzle look like a picture without needing to break your bank with significant increases to you. I'll wrap up my ramblings and get to the core of this deal. Although it'll be a little while before we need to increase prices depending on when existing contracts get depleted and new contracts are in effect, I thought it was best to give you a transparent heads up, so you weren't blindsided and also had the opportunity to lock in existing prices for the next 6 months. That's the deal, 40% off all our coffees and I've unlocked delayed dispatch for the next 8 months. When prices do increase I hope you think "what was all the fuss about that's not too much of an increase," but please keep in mind without a bunch of different strategies in place (a number of which I haven't mentioned here, as to not bore you too much haha) to help mitigate our costs increases, our prices would have easily needed to go up over $10 per kg in a relatively short amount of time. Fingers crossed this deal's a real winner for the Oz Bargain Community :)

We're offering you a super 40% discount off our entire coffee range. Also given Mother's Day's around the corner you can also save 40% off the super stylish Hario Harior 2 Cup French Press, plus delayed as mentioned dispatch is extended for a whopping 8 months, more info below

Love your transparency. Keep up the great work!

Thank you so much for the terrific, uplifting vote of confidence!!!

I promise we'll keep working hard to stay in your good books :)

      • Your welcome!

I'm keen to try something new. I've only ever had moments to memories. I use an aeropress to drink white coffee. I like the sound of the Brazil single and maybe one of the other blends.

        • +1

          :)

Always good to mix it up and try something new. Hard to go wrong with our much loved Brazil Single Origin, also based on how you enjoy coffee our South Central Blend may also be a real winner for you!

  • I agree, great transparency, and delayed dispatches for 6 months is awesome! I'll be covered for nearly the rest of the year, thanks :)

    • +1

WOW thank you so much for your wonderful orders, love your planning ahead skills, it really is appreciated!!!

Fantastic to know this deal's a winner for you and that we're in your books books, we'll continue working hard to stay there :)

  • Any chance you can have more click and collect options either on a Monday or Friday in June?

    • Sure thing, we should be able to make that happen for you. Just send a reply email to your order confirmation with the request. The reason advanced delayed dispatch is primarily on Tuesday and Thursdays is because it's too far in the future to roaster our team and we don't want to overpromise and underdeliver. We generally open up other days of the week when our team roaster is all set for that period :)

      • Pun intended using 'roaster' instead of 'roster' I assume? 😎

        • +1

haha if we're getting technical I took a quick trip to typo central, added to which I'm always thinking about roaster so you can put a Freudian slip in the mix and that was the result. However, I'll take a corny pun when I can, so I won't edit the typo and you can consider the pun now proudly claimed :)

  • Looking for a low acid blend can you tell me which one that would be

    • Hey @sivadfam always better to ask than wonder!

Our lowest acidity blend is our Moments to Memories Blend (low-medium acidity) :)

  • ok thanks

    • :)

  • thanks order placed :)

    • Terrific to hear, thank you so much for your order :)

  • +1

What would be the best blend for a milk based coffee like latte or flat white?

    • Great question!

In terms of blends our Moments to Memories and South Central Blends should be the winners for you. In terms of coffees in general, our Brazil Single Origin is a real favourite for milk based coffees and I personally think our Swiss Water Process Decaf (noted that you'll miss the energy kick with this one) is exceptional for milk based coffee :)

      • Thank you

        • :)

          • @LimeBlueCoffee: One more question please, if I'm looking for a blend with no fruity/acid flavour, Brazil São Paulo Single Origin would be the best option here?

            • +1

              @Markoov: Nice follow up!

All our coffees have some form of acidity kick to keep things interesting, but our Brazil has a low acidity kick. It's predominantly milk chocolate in terms of the flavour note but does have some subtle fruity undertones as it's a Naturally Processed Coffee. I think it should be a winner for you, but if not then I'd recommend Moments or our Peru Single Origin :)

    • Flat white drinker here. I recommend you go for Brazil São Paulo Single Origin. If you dial it in exactly right, you'll absolutely love it. I've tried Moments to Memories as well and it's fine, but to me Brazil São Paulo Single Origin just tastes better.

  • While i was overseas in the middle east, i noticed coffee prices (and herbs/spices) are significantly cheaper (around 50 to 70% off Aussie prices), other commodities are close to aussie prices though . They had already passed a price increase on coffee too a few weeks ago. Maybe aussie wages play a big part in this price difference.

    • +2

      Interesting!

I don't know the specifics of exactly where in the middle east you were and even if I did I'm not sure I'd have a more specific answer than the below. Yes, you're right that wages would play a part along with a few other factors like local FX rates compared to USD. There could also be a quality difference in the coffee you had, that said in the current climate a reduction in quality wouldn't make a dramatic cost difference. I suspect it's likely got a lot more to do with macro factors. A decent amount of coffee is grown in and around the middle in e.g. Saudi Arabia, Yemin, India and a bunch of countries in Africa; this helps with industry cash flow in terms of closer proximity allowing for smaller purchase orders and heavily reduced logistics costs compared to getting that coffee to Australia. Another key factor that may also be in play is Government intervention in for the form of coffee subsidies to prop their local coffee offerings, this may also speak to existing prior crop reserves. One factor which may have caused their recent price hike, even if the above factors are in their favour, is that fertiliser costs have been increasing significantly for farmers in recent times. Thanks for sharing, always good to see how coffee markets vary in different parts of the world :)

  • thanks for this deal and for the great coffee.

    • You're most welcome!

Terrific to know we're in your good books (which is where we plan to stay), thank you so much for that fantastic compliment :)

      • all good, ordered a few times now and it's always a good experience. keep it up mate!

        • Wonderful, thanks again, will do :)

  • Best coffee for V60 pour overs?

    • Nice question!

Is really comes down to your personal flavour preferences, if you could please answer the below I should hopefully be able to point you in the right direction :)

Do you enjoy coffee black (I know V60 drinkers usually have it black, but some don't, so not going to assume), white or both?

Do you lean towards fruity, earthy, chocolatey or a combo of coffee flavours?

Do you enjoy a low, medium or high acidity kick?

      • Black always

        Fruit more so than chocolate

        Medium acidity

        Thanks!

        • Appreciate the follow up, very helpful!

I believe our Nectar of the Gods Blend should be a real winner for you :)

  • Do you guys only sell in beans or can you grind too?

    • +3

Not sure why you are negged but if you can afford a grinder your coffee will be noticeably better if you grind before brewing.

  • Just ordered the 2kg Brazil Single Origin!
    Thanks for the offer!

    • Fantastic, thank you so much for that terrific order!

Very happy this deal's a winner for you :)

  • Just got my new espresso machine and in lookout for my first specialty beans, your price is extremely competitive so I’ll be giving you a go! Also keen on the decaf for my wife :)

Can you advise if it’s ok for me to bulk buy and simply throw 1kg bags as in into the chest freezer to keep freshness while I work through first bag? I know once taken out to not refreeze so 1kg bags at a time are perfect for my espresso intake

    • Hey @wackoh congrats on your new setup, always an exciting time when coffee setups gets an upgrade!

Very glad we've caught your attention, we'll work hard to keep it. You're spot on with your thoughts on freezing the good stuff, love seeing a question and the perfect answer all wrapped up nicely in a single comment :)

  • just in time to replenish my fav coffee beans. ordered :)

    • Amazing, it's it terrific when the timing lines up perfectly!

Thank you so much for another order, it's truly appreciated :)

  • Hey Tom, what's the Apple Crumble blend taste like compared to Colombia SO? Keen to try

    • +1

Hey @foxes28 great question, always better to ask than wonder!

Comparatively speaking, I'd say the ACB was notably sweeter and has a slightly lower acidity kick :)

  • Hi mate, thanks for the write-up. Appreciate your work. Can you offer bean suggestions for oat milk? I tend to only use a small amount of milk for a cup.

    • +1

Hey @OfTheOverflow appreciate the double check, terrific to know we're in your good books!

I find Oat Milk pairs best with sweet earthy, nutty and chocolatey coffees. Based on that I'd recommend our Brazil or Peru Single Origins, as well as our Moments to Memories Blend and our Swiss Water Process Decaf :)

      • Thanks for your time! I'll put through an order.

        • +1

          You're most welcome!

Thank you for your order, it really does mean a lot, fingers crossed you love our fresh coffee :)

  • I appreciate your candour. Ordered another load of coffee, now I'm set for the next year.

    • WOOHOO sounds like your planning ahead skills are truly on point, love it!!!

Fantastic to know my small novel is a winner for you, thank you so much for your terrific scale of orders, it truly is appreciated and does make a positive difference :)

  • What's the closest for "Mexico Nayarita Single Origin" - Its not available it seems

    • +1

Hey @b0nd always better to check than wonder!

Our Nectar of the Gods Blend should def be the winning ticket for you :)

      • +1

Oh goody! I received my order of the Mexican SO last week and it’s simply awesome as a stovetop brew (once I got the grind right). I also missed out on the NOTG release special, so thins gives me the chance to satisfy both with one order. Thanks Tom!

On a related note, I love your forward thinking. The company I work for deals with a lot of small businesses and it’s scary how many don’t have any sort of business-continuity plan for when unexpected things like this happen. And, thank you for not taking the opportunity to price gouge. It’s a balancing act to keep prices low and the lights still burning.

  • Your coffee has been brilliant! Thank you for the post and transparency!

    • WOW what an amazing, uplifting vote of confidence!!!

Thank you immensely for sharing that wonderful compliment, it's truly appreciated and I promise we'll keep working hard to keep in your good books and be as helpful as we can through informative transparency :)

  • Hi - what's your darkest roast?

    • +1

Hey @unit0000 our darkest roast is a medium omni roast. If I'm right to assume you're looking for something that cuts through milk really well with nice coffee chocolatey notes, rather than a very bitter coffee, then our Brazil Single Origin, Moments to Memories Blend and Swiss Water Process Decaf should all be standout winners for you. If you're after a "darkest roast" to get something with strong bitter notes, then we may not be the best fit right now as we don't currently offer any dark (bitter) roasts :)

  • we only choose Lime Blue beans for our coffee machine at work.. :)

    • Amazing!

Absolute music to my ears, thank you and the rest of your team so much for the continued support, it truly does mean a lot :)

  • Thanks for your lovely write-up, OP. 👍

I'm planning to order 1kg each of your Brazil SO and M2M blend in 500g packets. I know I can freeze the excess bags, but ideally, I'd like each of those packs to be shipped fortnightly so that I can enjoy a bit more of that freshness 😊. Is there a way to do that other than the obvious 4 different orders to save the shipping costs?

    • Hey @public-secret fantastic to know my post caught your eye and it's a winner for you!

Sounds like a terrific combo order. I'd love to have the perfect work around for you, but at present the options are freeze the extra or place multiple orders. We have been working in the background around restarting our subscription offering, but there's still a few tech spanners in the works we need to iron out so the offering is what we'd ideally like it to be :)

  • Fantastic post OP! Keep it up.

    • Terrific to hear, very happy it's a winning post for you!

I promise we'll keep working hard to stay in your good books :)

  • My last order (my first one with the new coloured bags), 3 of the 4x500g bags weren't sealed. If I squeezed them a little air could be felt coming out the top of the bag (not the valve or the zip seal) and were loose and malleable around the beans instead of vacuum tight or off gassing "puffy". A roaster I used years ago had a problem with his heat seal machine that resulted in the same thing. Might be worth checking yours in case it's still happening (hopefully just a random bad few for me though). Beans went straight in a sealed container in the freezer (still had plenty of the order before that to get through :) ). I'm up to them now and they're still tasting great so no problems at the drinking end.

    • Hey @salem thank you so much for your recent order and it's fantastic to know the good stuff it still "tasting great!"

Appreciate you taking the time to reach out in such a thoughtful and understanding manner. If there's ever an issue, although I do appreciate your patience and understanding, please don't put up with it, please just send a reply email to your order confirmation or tracking info email detailing the issue and we'll just straight into resolution mode for you. That issue is not the fault of the bag, sealer, delivery companies or another Lime Blue Team member's fault. It's totally my fault and I sincerely apologise. The band on our heat sealer snapped a little while ago. I replaced it/fixed it myself. Initially it wasn't aligned quite right, I re-fixed it and resealed the misaligned bags, but it looks like I missed resealing yours (and 4 other customer's orders) and as the coffee degassed the pressure opened up the bag. I sorted it my end and it looks like you're on top of things your end, but I do acknowledge it's still not the experience you paid for, so when you get a sec please still send a reply email to your order confirmation so we can rectify the experience for you :)

      • I haven’t mentioned this before, but it’s a recurring long term issue in every order. In about 90% of cases, the problem is with the valve, which I usually fix by taping it. I typically order three to four bags at a time, and I’m fortunate if even one arrives properly vacuum-sealed. I don't recall ever having all bags properly vacuum-sealed.

        • Hey @raybies appreciate the check in and thank you souch for your continued order, they're truly appreciated!

Just to ensure we're on the same page, our bags aren't vacuum sealed. The bags should expand as the coffee degassed and the one-way valves are only intended to be activated if the bags fully inflate, so prevent them bursting open. When you get a sec could you please let me know more about your storage method as I might be able to provide a helpful solution for you :)

          • @LimeBlueCoffee: Hi Tom, In my last order, 1 bag was vacuum sealed, the other 3 werent (I ordered 2kg of the same and one vacuum sealed vs. 1 wasn't).
What could be the reason here?

            • @freedomofspeech: Hey @freedomofspeech always better to ask than wonder!

Our bags aren't vacuum sealed, but if a bag is compressed in transit via direct contact pressure (other orders on top) or atmospheric pressure (travels on a plane as some interstate orders do), it can make the bag look vacuum sealed. Once the bag is opened, it should decompress and look normal :)

          • @LimeBlueCoffee: Certainly. Upon delivery, I open the package and inspect each item for vacuum integrity.
            • If a unit is properly vacuum-sealed, it is placed directly into the freezer.
            • If not, I manually evacuate the air and secure the valve with tape.
            • Should it still fail to hold a vacuum:
              – If it is the sole non air tight bag, it is refrigerated for imminent use.
              – If multiple bags fail, I repackage them in vacuum bags and freeze accordingly.

            • @raybies: To offer some thoughts in line with but not coming from the OP:

Coffee bags don't really ever come vacuum sealed. That's not what the valve is for. If you squeeze whatever gas (presumably some air and high CO2) is in there out then the beans will continue to offgas CO2 and then the bag will inflate a tiny bit. The valve is one way, shouldn't let O2 in and may let CO2 out a bit.

The CO2 wouldn't oxidise the beans and therefore shouldn't really age them. It's protective. The bags you are referring to as vacuum would've just been more squished when packed and transported.

              • @GabrielB: I understand, it’s never bothered me that some bags appear vacuum sealed. I assume this effect results from pressure changes during air transport: low cabin pressure during flight followed by re-pressurization can cause the bag to contract around the beans. Some bags look genuinely vacuum sealed… you can clearly see the contours of the individual beans through the mylar/paper bag.

                • @raybies: Is it possible that if the beans are still warm when they go in the bag, then the air might be too, and then as it cools the air will shrink a little and give the effect of vacuum sealing?

  • Nothing from Africa = :(

    • We've featured some delicious coffee from Kenya earlier this year and we're planning on celebrating some more coffee from other parts of Africa later this year. In the meantime, if you're keen on African coffee for it's famous fruity flavours then our Nectar of the Gods blend may be a real winner for you :)

  • Hey Tom, are you likely to be getting any more of the Mexico Single Origin in? I’m about half way through the bag from my last order & it’s by far my favourite bean so far. Delicious black, and I’ve even found it’s quite good with (iced) oat milk.

    Keep up the good work!

    • Woohoo for that terrific, complimentary vote of confidence, thank you so much for the order and fantastic feedback!!!

When we got it we purchased all that was available and we've reached out to the importer to find out if/when more will arrive, so watch this space. If no more comes in there's a chance that more will become available from existing stock as we always keep a small buffer of Singles incase something goes awry e.g. there's a blackout midroast, so please send an email to [email protected] if you'd like to be on the Mexico waitlist in case there's some left. In the meantime, based on your enjoyment of our Mexico Single Origin, I have a hunch you'll really love our Nectar of the Gods Blend, might be the ticket to tie you over :)

  • Any thoughts on Thank You Blend vs Moment to Memories? What are the key differences?
    In particular for Flat Whites

    • Nice question, always better to ask than wonder!

Moments will be more chocolatey and sweet, with a slightly lower acidity kick. Whereas Thank you will have a slightly higher acidity kick and more fruity notes :)

  • Just placed an order for Apple Crumble Blend because I was curious and another one for Brazil São Paulo SO because for me it is the absolute best for flat white.

Really, all your beans are amazing. Keep up the great work!

    • Woot Woot absolute music to my ears to hear you call all our coffee "amazing" :)

Thank you so much for another terrific order and your uplifting vote of confidence, it's truly appreciated and I promise we'll keep working hard to stay in your good books!

Fingers crossed you love our ACB as much as our Brazil SO :)

  • +1

Thanks for the write up, gives a real insight to the way the coffee market is heading and helps me plan the next few months of coffee. I've tried a few of your single origins and blends so far, they always come out amazing and super easy to dial in on my grinder. Will place a few orders today for a few different beans to mix it up! Keep it up!

    • Terrific to know you've found my write-up helpful :)

Thank you so much for more fantastic order, that wonderfully uplifting vote of confidence, all of which are truly appreciated and something I promise we won't take for granted!

P.s. love your planning ahead skills to ensure you don't need to worry about running out of the good stuff :)

  • Apologies if I've misread, but I would like to order 3 different coffees to be dispatched a month apart each, how do i go about doing this?

    • i believe you'd have to place seperate orders if you want them to be shipped on different days

      • Hey @racerm911 always better to double check than wonder or punt it!

@badmutha is spot on (appreciate the helpful answer assist), 3 separate dispatches can be achieved by placing 3 separate orders and selecting your ideal dispatch date for each order :)

        • Ohhh I see, thanks for letting me know.

I was trying to get free shipping by keeping it to a single order. :)

          • @racerm911: That makes sense, but it's just not financially or technically viable at present to offer free shipping for single orders under $69. I think a single order with free shipping and putting your freezer to work may be the winning solution for you. Unless of course you're anywhere close to Moorabbin in VIC, then you could opt for click and collect :)

  • Great coffee!! I love the organic Peru blend.

    SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS!!

    • +1

WooHoo love that sign off and the whole message for that matter :)

Wrapped to know how much you love our Single Origin from Peru. Thank you so much for your order and continued support!
