Hey Oz Bargain Community,
I think this one is worth a read, but I also know life flies by quickly, so if you're too flat chat to read this small novel of a post, then please feel welcome to skip to the good stuff in bold
Some of you may likely have heard some scuttlebutt and maybe even read my prior heads up, that prices in the coffee market have been a little bit wild over the last 12 months and a look into the not too distant further seems like the wildness will continue. In the last year industry wholesale prices (usually 20kg is the min order for wholesale prices, some still offer it for 10kg orders) have increased about $10 per kg to $35-$38 per kg. The primary reason you haven't seen a whopping increase at the supermarkets is just because their suppliers are contracted with fixed prices, so some suppliers are likely selling it to supermarkets at a loss and prices will increase on the shelves when next contracts are in effect. Now before you start looking for the panic stations button, please keep reading on. I have locked in most, but not all of our next green coffee contracts, so the good news is I have a clear path forward, which I'm going to share with you here. In general prices have gone up substantially since I locked in the last lot of main contracts, but I've formulated a strategy (hopefully a good one) from a number of angles so the cost increase shouldn't hit you too hard. Great news for you is that I won't be passing the full increase onto you, so our margins go down a bit, but that's just the name of the game, I need to keep myself on my toes and continue to think outside the box. Also moving forward the quality will be on point with what you're used to from Lime Blue, as getting lower quality to reduce costs was a non starter for us. To make all the pieces of the puzzle viably fit together we've had to pivot a few things, notably increase contract volumes which achieve two things, first it means we were able to negotiate a better contract and section if we grow even at lower margins we can achieve economies of scale in certain areas which can help with the cost increases. For example, when you hit certain revenue levels overall merchant processing fees get reduced. Complimentary Lotus Biscoff will need to stop at some point in the future and of course if we viably can bring it back we will. We still have some stock on hand so it'll stay for a bit longer. I know you may be thinking how will that make a difference, but to get the price breaks I'd need to place a bulk order costing over $7,000 (I know that's a lot of biscuits), then if you add the wages based on time it takes to pack them and increased shipping costs it comes to over $10,000 annually. We're also working with our Australia Post account manager on a few strategies to reduce our shipping costs to try and partially mitigate their annual increases to us…also there's a bunch of other things I'm going to implement. Although all of these strategies won't counteract our cost increases they will help from a big picture perspective and enable us to make the puzzle look like a picture without needing to break your bank with significant increases to you. I'll wrap up my ramblings and get to the core of this deal. Although it'll be a little while before we need to increase prices depending on when existing contracts get depleted and new contracts are in effect, I thought it was best to give you a transparent heads up, so you weren't blindsided and also had the opportunity to lock in existing prices for the next 6 months. That's the deal, 40% off all our coffees and I've unlocked delayed dispatch for the next 8 months. When prices do increase I hope you think "what was all the fuss about that's not too much of an increase," but please keep in mind without a bunch of different strategies in place (a number of which I haven't mentioned here, as to not bore you too much haha) to help mitigate our costs increases, our prices would have easily needed to go up over $10 per kg in a relatively short amount of time. Fingers crossed this deal's a real winner for the Oz Bargain Community :)
