I saw this Matter Presence Sensor had been released by meross recently and after trying and being frustrated by the offerings from IKEA and Sonoff I decided to give it a go. It is light years ahead and uses both mmWave and PIR as dual triggers. It has a Pet Mode which is amazing and seems to remove false positives from my Robovac. It has an adjustable sensing distance and has been awesome to put in my kitchen to manage a whole variety of automations (coffee machine, lights, security sensor overnight if movement is detected coming in from Garage side-door). So far it's been brilliant and has been dead on every time.

Can't rate these highly enough and will be picking up a second at an ATL according to 3xC's. Also Matter supported, so can be local only and use whatever hub you have on hand.

From Amazon:

  • Matter Multi-platform Compatibility: Use any Matter-supported hub (e.g., Amazon Echo, Google Nest) to control this presence sensor. Matter dose not require a cloud account and data is more secure

  • Radar+PIR+Light 3-in-1 Sensor: Combines PIR and millimeter wave radar to detect both motion and human presence (even without any motion) with fewer false alarms compared to single-technology sensors. Enhanced by a built-in light sensor.

  • Smart Home Integration: Keeps light on while reading, adjust the air conditioner, start the fan or control the lighting fixtures - all of which can be coordinated with a simple and sophisticated presence detector at the center.

  • Wide Coverage & Easy Setup: The motion detector offers a wide detection range of up to 12 meters (with presence detection effective up to 6 meters). The 180° pivoting, 360° rotating base, and cable management allow flexible and neat positioning

  • Pet-Proof Triggering & Privacy: Equipped with a removable pet-proof shield that prevents false alarms from pets or robotic vacuum. meross Matter Smart Sensor also features a camera-less design that eliminates the need for image capture or room mapping, prioritizing user privacy.

  • Wired for Power: The smart PIR motion sensor requires continuous power for operation and the length of power cord is 1.5m. Adapter inside the package box

  • Anyone can recommend a good hub that’s not another amazon or google device?

    • Are you after something cheaper or more private? Also Apple or Android?

      • Apple, just don’t want to get another alexa or google device. I do have HA but no zigbee/matter hardware

        • +4

So Matter works via Wifi. I'd setup Matter on your HA instance and make that your Hub. You can then connect this directly to your HA instance and have everything run local-only from that point on.

          More info here - https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/matter/

  • Does anyone have a comment on whether this can be setup completely locally via home assistant?

    • +4

I've done exactly that. Many ways you can do it, but I set it up as a Matter device for complete support.

      Entities shown:

      • Occupancy

      • Illuminance

So far it's been working great and super stable. Configuration is via the Meross app and then everything from that point onwards is through local-only Matter.

      • Does it give you distance and direction etc for mapping the space?

        • +5

Not directional, just distance based. Here’s the config - https://ibb.co/KzmM0f1t

The sensor has an envelope that extends out and down so it can see directly opposite but also beneath it down the floor. It works very well for detection.

      • +2

Came here to see if someone had confirmed if it worked in HA - thanks for the comments.

      • People have reported that if your internet goes down then it stops working in HA because it's dependent on the cloud. Have you found this to be the case?
        https://community.home-assistant.io/t/meross-ms600-presence-…

        • I have Meross Plugs and works fine when Internet is offline. I also have them blocked via firewall …….perhaps different?

      • So this is Matter over Wifi?

Currently running a mix of wifi and zigbee stuff but haven't set up anything using Matter. Been looking to try a presence sensor but the Aqara has always been a little pricey so this might be worth a try.

  • +4

For those wanting a ESPHome based device, I've found these to be good - https://www.athom.tech/blank-1/human-presence-sensor

Only drawback is that updates need to be flashed physically with USB cable, not enough RAM to do an OTA update. (see: https://github.com/athom-tech/athom-configs/issues/59) but no real biggie as I don't mind updating manually every few months.

    • Looks interesting as do their other offerings and decent pricing to boot!

      • Pretty sure pricing is USD, FYI.

    • edit: to enable OTA update, just disable API encryption on the device. Verified with esphome 5.2 :)

  • Anything that can be used outdoors?

    • i think under cover should be fine

    • +1

This one isn't IP sealed, but as it's mmWave and PIR you could put it in a plastic weatherproof box and it will be able to see through it. You'd just have to work out power supply (via USB). The box will impact the PIR sensor but mmWave will still work, so detection may be slightly delayed.

  • +1

    looks good mate

  • +1

Can this be used with Meross Garage Door opener to detect if there is anyone in way of the garage door closing?

    • Cool use case, would love to know.

      • +1

Looks like they both work with Home Assistant, so you'd definitely be able to set up an automation for it. Something like checking for the presence of someone near the garage door, that runs whenever the door opener is activated - which interrupts the opening/closing if there's someone nearby.

    • +1

Definitely can! It has a configurable distance so you make sure it doesn't see beyond the door and just within.

It uses mmWave and PIR, so the PIR wakes the sensor up instantly and then mmWave kicks in to detect the distance. Super cool how it can be configurable.

That's a really cool use-case too, I might just borrow it!

    • I do something similar with PIR beam sensors (https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005240343876.html) wired to an separate ESP32, combined with an ESPHome athom garage door closer.

Even though I have a presence sensor in the garage, given the safety aspect I use the beam sensors as a primary method to determine if there is an obstruction and the presence only controls lights.

      • I'm assuming this setup is via HomeAssistant?

        • +1

          Yes, since ESPHome

    • +5

Use proper beam sensors, it's a safety aspect so you should use the correct device.

    • A simpler cheaper way might be built in to your garage door controller. They usually have inputs for safety beams, whereby you can buy a cheap infrared sensor to hook up to it.

  • Anyone got experience or advice on how to get this to work with Android (i.e. not HA) and ideally not a google/Amazon hub? I use Samsung Smart Things currently, but open to trying other ecosystems if people have strong recommendations for one

  • Can this be powered via a power bank?

    • +2

It can as it uses <10W, but for how long would be another question.

  • Anyone have any idea how this compares to say the Apollo Automation MSR-2 (roughly the same price)?

FYI Same price with free shipping directly from the Meross web site: https://shop.meross.com/products/smart-presence-sensor-ms600…

    • I've been considering the Apollo MSR-2, but it's coming up as $71.94 shipped for me, so a bit more expensive than the Meross MS600. The advantages of the MSR-2 are Bluetooth Tracker, the optional CO2 sensor, the size and the local HA integration. On the other hand, the build quality of the MS600 is probably better - I've had the Apollo AIR-1 for a month and the case seems a bit fragile (no actual issues so far).

      • I've got an MSR-2 coming and I ordered an MS600 directly from the Meross site today for USD$29.44 (~AUD$46) - so will try them out and see how they compare (note I've never used a presence sensor, and am new to HA, so …)

Apparently if you use the Meross LAN integration (from HACS) you can manage them locally - another thing I'll try

Note: I'd also read a comment somewhere that the MS600 tries to "call home" every now and then and if you actually block their Internet access they stop working when the call home fails - unsure if this is actually true

        • Apparently if you use the Meross LAN integration (from HACS) you can manage them locally

The instructions for that are a bit full-on. I went through that whole process for the Meross Smart Plug MSS310, only to find that the new models do not have an internal wifi hotspot for provisioning. In other words, local integration HA without the Meross App is no longer possible in the latest release of the smart plug.

Hopefully you will have better luck with the MS600.

          • +1

@Dinjay: I have all of my Meross plugs setup via HomeKit and Matter devices in HA. Works far better than the unofficial integration in my experience and is natively supported.

          • +2

@Dinjay: I integrated mine both via Matter (natively) and via the Meross LAN integrations and both were easy to setup (see my comments a few down below)?

I used this Meross LAN integration (from HACS) https://github.com/krahabb/meross_lan - after installing the integration the MS600 is detected automatically and all I had to do was give it my Meross credentials for it to auto setup (apparently that's a once only required thing and it's all local after that)

        • How’d you go with them?

          • +2

@Jemz: Both the MSR-2 and MS600 integrated into HA fine

            My notes (for Home Assistant):

            • I added the Meross MS600 to the Meross App (matter) and then also shared/linked it from there to integrate into HA via Matter (over Wifi) (NB: I didn't need to add it to HomeKit (I don't have) or anything else) - in Matter it only exposes 2 Sensors (Illuminance and Occupancy)

            • I also added the Meross LAN integration, and added it there as well (can have both simultaneously it seems) and it then exposes a few more Sensors (Presence Distance/Time&Motion) plus a bunch of Configuration options plus a few Diagnostics

            • the Apollo MSR-2 by default (ESPHome) exposes many more items (Controls, Sensors, Configuration & Diagnostics) than the Meross MS600 does (either via Matter or the Meross LAN integration) - and it also has Temp, Pressure & UV sensors

            • the max range for the MSR-2 is ~6m whereas the MS600 can do ~12m (likely mostly PIR at that range?)

The automation I have setup currently with the MS600 is when the sun elevation is below the horizon (nighttime), and the Illuminance (lux) is below a certain level, if Occupancy is detected turn on the light and turn off 5 minutes after occupancy is not detected

            • +1

@Remorhaz: Thanks for the info, I ended up getting a bunch of msrs and mtrs and AIR-1’s.

Still yet to build automations but will be lights/blinds

  • @JSONBourne what kind of automations do you link it with? what are the scenarios?

    • Following this query as I have smart bulbs controlled via GH , Can I use GH automation such as If presense sensed then turn on lights ?

      • +1

Following - seems like a quality of life upgrade instead of me constantly saying 'ok Google turn on light.'

My one year old now looks up at the ceiling lights everytime someone says 'ok Google'

    • I'm still experimenting but the sensor in my kitchen does the following:

      • Toggles on and off my Kitchen under-bench lights based on presence

      • During the evening/night turns off the lights in the Kitchen and adjoining room when I haven't been downstairs for an hour

      • Acts as an alarm trigger in the evening when I'm sleeping upstairs or when I'm away from the house for longer periods

      • Trigger to turn off heating/cooling when I haven't been in the lower level for X time period

So it's been great for power saving and an Alarm sensor. It also excludes the Robovac as well which is handy when it comes around and vacuums in the AM.

      • how do you exclude the robovac? Just tell the routine not to run if the vac is active?

        • You can set a sensitivity setting so that it excludes things like Pets or Robovacs. It also comes with an attachment to block the FOV from hip height down if you really want to completely stop it. Works well!

  • This doesnt include the light?
What light goes well with this?

    • It has a light sensor built in which you can use to trigger turning a light on (ie. ambient light is low, turn on another light).

You can use any kind of light that works in your ecosystem (ie. HomeKit, Google Cloud). That’s the beauty of a device like this with Matter!

      • Thanks, so it doesn't have a night light (low ambient)?

        • It doesn't have a light in it, it's just to help trigger other lights if the illuminance level is low.

  • +2

Why is Amazon categorizing it as #1 hair removal product lol.

Was it that frustrating to set-up?

  • +1

Everyone is cheering this poor bloke on now I hope you're all as keen when he finds a ghost.

  • -1

What's the difference between a presence sensor and motion detection sensor? You can buy the Hue motion sensors for this price and are of arguably higher quality

    • +1

Radar+PIR+Light 3-in-1 Sensor: Combines PIR and millimeter wave radar to detect both motion and human presence (even without any motion).

    • +1

A presence sensor is just a simple security sensor that looks for movement. It's only so accurate but it has a long range (>12m).

A presence sensor is far more accurate and can detect human breathing, so even if you are for example sitting on the couch, you still still be detected. A motion sensor on the other hand isn't sensitive to that kind of movement and say the room is empty.

This combines both into one unit, so it's super accurate at both long ranges and subtle movements.

  • @OP thanks for the deal.

Have the FP2 and the FP1e , going to try this one as well.
Hopefuly it works well on ST platform.

    • +1

Hey mate, did you find the Meross one any better? I’m happy with my FP2, especially with the ability to set up multiple zones. Unless there's a good reason to switch, I’ll stick with it for now.

  • I miss out last time… saw it back in stock again.. bought one!

  • Got it set up in HA. Working alright, although sometimes a bit of a delay between the sensor detecting (going by the LED) and passing that on to HA which can be a pain when I'm relying on it to turn on the lights in the room.

It's on firmware 9.4.30 and is telling me 9.4.34 is available, but everytime I try to update via the Meross app it fails and reboots the sensor.

Anyone tried the Tuya ones (and Meross to compare even better), pretty cheap and available in Wifi and Zigbee.
(Just realised they are microwave only)
